Would you mind looking at my throat? (Picture warning)

Gross picture warning.

I'm pretty sure I've got tonsillitis judging by the marbles in my throat, but I've accidentally scared myself reading about quinsy and now this "pocket" on one tonsil is looking suspicious. Anyone know if this is a normal tonsillitis looking thing or if I should be concerned?

Don't know what happened with the pictures there sorry.

your throat looks quite swollen, my concern would be if there is any difficulty swallowing.

Shadycurtain · 19/04/2023 22:28

Looks extremely swollen, think you should be seeing a Dr

It says see a GP if worried about a sore throat and call 999 if any problems swallowing or breathing.

You should definitely worry about quinsy and if you think it is possible get medical advice asap - here is the quinsy page:

You need urgent medical care OP. Tonsils are so swollen, they’re touching in your photos-that’s never a good sign.

AiryFairy12 · 19/04/2023 22:37

that not normal at all

Moopsi · 19/04/2023 22:43

I would be concerned about your ability to swallow and/or breathe. Either get an out of hours appointment or go to A&E.

Tilllly · 19/04/2023 22:43

Ouch that looks sore!

I had a quinsy. I was drooling blood and pus. The pain was horrendous. They gave me morphine. I couldn't swallow at all
It came on very fast.

I'd say it's an awful infection, not sure it's a quinsy

CuriousMama · 19/04/2023 22:49

Bloody hell get that seen!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/04/2023 22:50

Not sure it's Quinsy but definitely needs to be seen asap !

Woopdee · 19/04/2023 22:54

Bloody hell I was hoping you'd all call me dramatic and I'd go get a nice sleep!

I will get a doctor's appointment first thing tomorrow but I don't think it's a&e worthy. I promise I can breathe and swallow, it's been like this since Monday! Been eating and drinking fine aside from the pain obviously, I don't even have a fever.

I'm glad it doesn't look like quinsy, apologies for making you all look at my raging tonsils.

OP posts:
carriedout · 19/04/2023 22:57

Everyone said get it seen, not leave it until tomorrow. And no one said it was not a quinsy, the two who mentioned it said 'not sure'.

Can you not get an out of hours GP appointment?

Emmamoo89 · 19/04/2023 22:59

Definitely get it seen to tonight x

rubytubeytubes · 19/04/2023 23:00

Fine to wait until Tomorrow with analgesia tonight and fluids - doesn’t need A&e and not quinsy.

Woopdee · 19/04/2023 23:00

We don't have an out of hours gp in this area, I'd have to wake my three year old up and drive 45 minutes to a&e to get seen, she was there a few weeks ago and there was a 10 hour wait. I really think I'm just being a tad dramatic with the whole quinsy thing here...

OP posts:
AiryFairy12 · 20/04/2023 10:51

any updates?

Woopdee · 20/04/2023 11:06

All they can offer is a phone call this afternoon so waiting for that. If they try to brush me off over the phone I'll insist on sending them the picture.

OP posts:
Woopdee · 20/04/2023 12:41

As expected over the phone I was told it's a just viral sore throat, asked them to please look at a picture and they called back to say if I start to choke on my own drool then go to a&e. Wouldn't even entertain the idea of it being tonsillitis. Antibiotics are like gold dust these days 🙄

OP posts:
custardbear · 20/04/2023 13:27

I'd be inclined to take pix regularly, perhaps
Before bed and morning, to see
How it's changing. Good luck

OrlandointheWilderness · 20/04/2023 14:05

To be fair antibiotics are like gold dust for a reason. And they won't magically cure something, they just hasten the healing by a couple of days. Definitely sore and tonsillitis, but not quinsy.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/04/2023 23:32

How the hell can they tell over the bloody phone?

Gargle with salt water 3x a day OP.

CuriousMama · 21/04/2023 23:18

Are you ok? Is it changing at all?

Woopdee · 22/04/2023 13:03

Still swollen and sore, I think today the swelling is starting to go down a little? Fingers crossed the worst is over.

OP posts:
ArabellaRockerfella · 22/04/2023 16:33

I would say that's not tonsillitis as your throat doesn't appear red/inflamed and there is no pus, so antibiotics wouldn't do anything. However, those tonsils are HUGE! and definitely not normal. Give it 3 days and if they haven't gone down I would push for a face to face appointment.
