Tooth abscess

Has anyone had one of these? Should it still be THIS sore after going to the dentist twice? The second time, I refused to leave until something was done and had root canal drilled.
Am now like a hamster but in agony though the pain comes and goes.
Can anyone recommend pain relief that will see me through until I see dentist again on the 13th?

"It's not my fault his fingers are so fat he couldn't do the root canal properly" . Sympathies for your pain.

swampster · 09/02/2008 00:48

Sympathies. I was popping the extra strong painkillers I got for my c-sections for root canal area toothache last week - antibiotics seem to have seen it off now.

avenanap · 09/02/2008 01:06

Antibiotics are crap. I've had so many doses I think I'm resistant. Ist ones made me pass out on the sofa. Kind of drifted a bit, being a 2nd yr student nurse I gave myself a check up (as you do), had a heart rate of 52. Could not call an ambulance as my son was asleep in bed. The other ones make my ME worse. Can't win. I can't open my jaw very wide so he could not get to the tooth. Dentist is a bit overweight (sumo size).

the abs i had worked after 24 hours roughly so i was in agony one day, i had tooth out but still suffering as the abscess has spread to my sinusis. i wish i'd looked after me teeth.

mehdismummy · 09/02/2008 16:15

spoke to dentist this am who told me to keep taking antibiotics and to come in when swelling gone down oh and to double dose if it gets worse. How long before they work? Been taking them since yesterday pm? In so much pain. Taking co codamol and nurofen but nothing helping. Help me!

needmorecoffee · 09/02/2008 16:22

anti-b's can take 48 hours to waork. Erythromycin isn't that great, you need metronadizole.
I feel for all you ladies having been there and witha reasonably quiet abcess under my front tooth (which I need to have pulled out but can't afford it all yet)
I was in a car carsh which broke one front tooth when i was 15. Had abcess issues and 3 root canals since. Worst thing, worse than childbirth.

mehdismummy · 09/02/2008 16:29

i dont think i can take metro(antib) as i am still bf. Anyone know?

mehdismummy · 09/02/2008 17:59

pain intense. When are these bloody anti b gonna work? Does ice pack on face work?

noddyholder · 09/02/2008 18:15

Clove oil and tea tree(very weak) I can't believe he just went over it.I had that done and it was shockingly painful.I got up in teh night without even telling dp and went to teh cash point in a cab then to a&e I was desperate. Please get teh tooth out next week xx

GreenGlassGoblin · 09/02/2008 18:22

I asked dentist about taking metronidazole while bf - IIRC the only problem was that it may make the milk taste bitter. If you can, I really really recommend going to a proper endo dentist. I have just been retreated for an abscess properly after more than 2 years of not feeling right. Cost a fortune, but all my normal dentist could offer was to pull the (front) tooth. The endo bloke worked on it with microscopes, found a second root canal which 4 other dentists had missed, and fixed things.

jeremyspants · 09/02/2008 18:36

mehdismummy-try an ice pack or even a flannel dipped in ice cold water then wrung. Hold it on your face till it gets warm (a couple of minutes) then do it again.
Can you express some milk and freeze it till you feel better?
The Paramol/ibuprofen spaced between four hourly is working plus the Amoxycillin. Am walking on a cloud though. (Not bf)
The salt in warm water is quite soothing too.
Can you manage to get a couple of hours sleep? Try and rest if possible.

only really bf as a comfort thing. He is two so its not a not a big deal. It just hurts so much! Whats in paramol?

southeastastra · 09/02/2008 20:15

i took ibuprofen with codeine, paracetamol and abs. to be honest the pain was like being in labour, i'd never suffered so much with it.

hot salt water rinses

mehdismummy · 09/02/2008 20:30

so very true south! Taking all you said! Might drain it myself in a minute! My dentist told me to come in after swelling gone. Then dentist on call says i should have had something done about it. I would have killled someone if they had touched my mouth today and she wanted 60 quid for the privellege! Ds only slighlty hit it this pm and i nearly hit ceiling! Well its been almost 36 hours now. So come on work ab work god damn you. Gonna seriously rattle soon. Sure i ave exceeded the limit! How often should i rinse?

southeastastra · 09/02/2008 20:36

these things always happen at the weekend too. i can't suggest anything else, i had a rocket lolly held to me face for the whole afternoon with it. the only thing that helped was tipping my head completely upside down.

mehdismummy · 09/02/2008 20:42

rocket lolly did not know you could still get them! Pmsl damn no lolly? like your mn name btw

southeastastra · 09/02/2008 20:51

it was tescos own make. rinse with hot salty water you may burst it. i wish i'd burst mine, i can't believe i'm still suffering 2 weeks later.

mehdismummy · 09/02/2008 20:54

poor you. It hurts! Where are you are there not any nhs dentist near you?

southeastastra · 09/02/2008 20:56

no i had the tooth out, but the abscess has travelled to my sinus. i left it too late, i knew the tooth was wobbly and should have done something about it .

southeastastra · 09/02/2008 20:56

therefore have developed sinisitus

mehdismummy · 09/02/2008 21:02

oh god that hurts too! You poor thing. Had that before tried olbas oil. Sudafed etc. Actually was by the sea down in sunny old kent with mum and took walk along pier that cleared them a bit.( as well as giving me a shocking hair do!)

southeastastra · 09/02/2008 21:14

i think (hope) finally the abs are kicking in. this has been the worst week of my life.

so silly but it's made me realise how much we rely on being able to breathe easily

mehdismummy · 09/02/2008 21:18

wish i had taken better care of my teeth. Hope you are pain free soon

alfiesbabe · 09/02/2008 22:52

Get it pulled out now!! Insist that the dentist does it!! I suffered agonies with a similar thing. My dentist suggested the root canal stuff, but tbh it costs a fortune and there's no guarantee you wont have future problems.

mehdismummy · 10/02/2008 06:54

still in agony mouth swollen even more now. Going to see emergency doctor who is gonna give me better ab. And stronger pain relief. Cant believe agony i am in
