I think i've got a coldsore coming on, and i've never had one before! I can feel a bit of a lump aswell.

What can i do to make it go away . I have no desire to have a crusty mountain sat on my face

Get Zoviraz (or the Boots own-brand version) asap. The sooner you put it on the more effective it will be.

monkeytrousers · 29/01/2008 22:50

go and buy some zovorax cream and eat lots of bananas

yummylittlelapin · 29/01/2008 22:51

Get some coldsore cream first thing tomorrow and slap it on. Also - and this sounds weird - a used teabag, cooled down and placed on your lip can help. No idea why.

Threadlice · 29/01/2008 22:51

Zovirax, that should be.

Threadlice · 29/01/2008 22:52

Interesting about the tea and the bananas. Will try.

Womba1 · 29/01/2008 22:52

COMPEED...COMPEED...COMPEED!!!! AND YES I KNOW I'M SHOUTING...BUT THIS STUFF IS INCREDIBLE!!!!
GET SOME FIRST THING IN THE MORNING!!!

SlightlyMadShrek · 29/01/2008 22:52

Own brand acyclovir (sometimes spelt acicloir) is identical to zovirax but 1/4 of the price in may instances.

thelittleElf · 29/01/2008 23:04

Oh thanks everyone.

I'm going to try the teabag thing first - and i bloody hate the stuff . Thankfully i've not long boiled the kettle!

Is compeed that stuff that looks like transparent mini plasters, that you stick on your lip? I vaguely remember an advert

Dropdeadfred · 29/01/2008 23:07

I have just blitzed a coldsore with the compeed patches..they are fantastic!

Zovirax always makes my coldsores bigger!!

Threadlice · 29/01/2008 23:09

Does compeed have the same active ingrediant as Zovirax? I think my coldsores have developed a tolerance of zovirax.

SlightlyMadShrek · 29/01/2008 23:13

DOn't know what the active ingrediant is.

but free sample available here

Threadlice · 29/01/2008 23:15

Ooh, thanks SSShrek. Am ordering freebie now.

If this is your first, just remember to not make contact with anybody else who does not yet have cold sores, as they are contagious until they are healed.

I am sure you probably know already, but just a reminder. I always warn my DH - no kisses.

The compeed patch sounds good, as it offers some protection, from what I can see - I am planning to try one next time.

Threadlice · 29/01/2008 23:18

Hmm, seems to be just a soother rather than a virus buster.

discoverlife · 29/01/2008 23:19

if you are ever really desperate and have an existing coldsore, neat salt or perfume will dry it up, but be bloody painful whilst doing so.

thelittleElf · 29/01/2008 23:22

Right i've got the teabag done, but what do i do? Dab it on every now and again, or sit here with it pressed on to my lip?
Desperatly want it to bugger off

OP posts:
Threadlice · 29/01/2008 23:23

That blush emoticon does a good job as a coldsore-sufferer emoticon.

Threadlice · 29/01/2008 23:24

Thwere's nothing else you can do until you get to the chemist. But remember that they are a sign that you are run down, or coming down with a cold (or pregnant!) to look after yourself, to help your immune system kick in.

thelittleElf · 29/01/2008 23:25

I'm currently looking up kath kidson style balaclavas

OP posts:
thelittleElf · 29/01/2008 23:26

Well i know i'm not pregnant, but i have been a bit run down, with lots going on at the moment, plus a bloody cough, so i guess i'm a prime target for the feckers

I have a compeed patch on right now. Honestly I am amzed at how good they are.
I normally don't ever want to leave the house if I have a cold sore as my lip swells up enormously and I always wnd up with a scab that cracks if I laugh or smile and I feel like a leper.

The patch prevented most if not all these symptoms and I could eat, drink and apply lipgloss....wow I could sell these things I feel like an evangelist.

My DP said he couldn't even see that I had a coldsore unless he really stared closely!

thelittleElf · 29/01/2008 23:32

Oh wow! I'll be grabbing myself a box of those in the morning

Thanks.

AitchTwoOh · 29/01/2008 23:34

another vote for the compeed patch, i could put lippy over it and everything.

ShakeysGirl · 29/01/2008 23:44

Sounds mad but i swear by convincing myself that i don't get cold sores. If i get a tingly feeling i repeat in my head over and over that it can't be a cold sore because i don't get them iyswim. Haven't had one for over a year now [crazy]
