Breast biopsy for calcifications

Jasmine64 · 20/06/2022 09:44

Has anyone had a routine mammogram and been recalled for calcifications? I had to have a second mammogram with a stereo-core biopsy on my left breast and now I have an appointment with a surgeon in three weeks time and the waiting is sheer torture. At the moment my anxiety is through the roof and I’m in a state of panic all day long and can hardly sleep. I’ve read a lot about this online as they say knowledge is power but I would really appreciate some personal experiences please……..

i had exactly the same today. Had my biopsy and now waiting for results. No referral yet until results aw they could come back fine. What did they tell you at the clinic ?

Jasmine64 · 20/06/2022 19:11

They just said it would take two to three weeks for the results to come back and to wait for an appointment letter. My appointment is next week and I’m terrified! I really want to ring them to try and bring it forward as I’m due to go on holiday at beginning of July……..I’m just too scared to make the call! Did they give you any signs that yours could be benign?

me, although mine was found because I’d had pain and could feel a grain of sand. Not a routine mammogram (was too young). I had DCIS diagnosed. Treatment was mastectomy (I had small boobs and extensive DCIS). no further treatment - no radio or chemo or anything. This was 8 years ago. Catching these things early is 🎉. Take it one step at a time, and Google doesn’t help x

Dottie73 · 20/06/2022 21:08

Yep. Had lots of tests and eventually came back with an all clear. Good luck!

JustDanceAddict · 20/06/2022 21:19

@Jasmine64 they said it was likely to be benign, but not 100% so did the biopsy. I’m hoping they’re right. I get the results early next week and we’ll go from there.
I really hope both of ours are benign.

What was the recovery time for the mastectomy and did you have a reconstruction at the same time? I’d definitely have that if needs be.

Danielle8p · 20/06/2022 21:42

Did you have calcifications?

Danielle8p · 20/06/2022 21:44

@2DemisSVP so did your mammogram show calcifications?

Jasmine64 · 20/06/2022 21:58

JustDanceAddict keeping everything crossed that we both get good outcomes 🤞

Sorry been exercising ! Yep loads , all over. And some high grade nasty types. Pathologist report mentioned extensive sampling because I think they really expected to find invasive cancer. But they didn’t 😅. I opted for silicon as quickest recovery and not enough stomach fat. Honestly, it’s really hard but try not to get ahead of yourself xx

JustDanceAddict · 21/06/2022 06:47

@2DemisSVP thanks - glad you recovered well. I just like to know possible outcomes. Sometimes you’re bombarded w info at appointments and don’t get thinking time.
i only have a tiny bit of calcification and nothing else looked sinister.,

2DemisSVP · 21/06/2022 07:19

That sounds really promising, and that the screening programme is doing its thing. Will keep my fingers crossed for you both 💐

Solosunrise · 21/06/2022 07:27

I had this last year. Routine mammogram, recalled for extra mammogram at specialised screening centre, areas of concern mentioned, core biopsy done.
Also 3 week wait for result (am a pragmatic sort but i won't deny that it's stressful)
Outcome was a phone call the day before my appointment to say I didn't need to go in as everything was fine.
Best wishes @Jasmine64 I hope it's the same for you Flowers

hattie43 · 21/06/2022 08:11

Yes recalled for 2nd mamo after routine mamo . Full battery of tests as bit of calcification found and all clear given . I do have a marker thing at the area though and this took about 6mths to settle .
Not a good experience at all and the fear is awful. Good luck OP

TomAllenWife · 21/06/2022 08:19

Yes

I had a biopsy which was a B3 so they vacuum extracted all the tissue

I get the results this morning, it's been a long stressful wait

Subbaxeo · 21/06/2022 08:23

Calcifications are common. Sometimes they definitely look like cancer based on their shape and proliferation, but often, although radiologist may suspect cancer/benign, they biopsy as only then will they get a definite result. If the former, in my experience, the radiologist will prepare you that the biopsy will be positive. Only calcification which is definitely benign doesn’t get biopsied. I have scattered calcification through my breast which has never been biopsied due to its appearance. Most biopsies are benign. That said, although it’s distressing once you have a result even if it’s the one you didn’t want you then have a treatment plan. Best wishes, OP.

They put a marker in me too!

did you get pain/bruising from the biopsy- I had mine yesterday afternoon and had no pain apart from a few twinges and feel normal. I can’t tell re bruises as it has dressing on but I can’t see anything obvious. No shower until fri and she said no housework but I have to do light duties at least.
i def have ‘the fear’ and need to wait a week for results.

hattie43 · 21/06/2022 09:39

I had slight bruising but that's normal .

That’s interesting. I had a phone call two weeks after my original mammogram/ biopsy/ ultrasound, to say that although my results were benign they weren’t able to get enough samples and they want to do a further biopsy to “dot the i’s and cross the t’s. Would they just say this to make sure I attended for the second biopsy or am I just clutching at straws? Fear really does mess with your head!!!

So sorry you’re going through this, it’s a terrible ordeal isn’t it? Call me naïve but I’ve never heard of breast calcification before… it came as quite a shock to me!

Could I ask you, when they extracted the tissue did you have local or general anaesthetic and have you got much of a scar? I can’t seem to find anything about this procedure online.

Really hope you have good news today so sending you lots of positive vibes……..good luck 🤞x

@TomAllenWife - good luck this morning. X

Solosunrise · 21/06/2022 11:20

I too have a titanium marker in my breast@JustDanceAddict I was where you're at, a year ago. I was cautious for a few days, and lovely DH wouldn't let me do anything much (I think he was more anxious about me than I was!) It all healed very quickly.

Thinking of all of you waiting for results ❤

TomAllenWife · 21/06/2022 15:51

So to update

I had calcifications on mammogram
Had biopsy was benign
Took lots of tissue under vacuum extraction as B3

They've said today all the tissue is benign but they are still concerned about atypical cells which will be removed in surgery under GA in a few weeks

🤷🏼‍♀️

I really feel for you, it must be such a stressful time for you just now. Let’s hope that once the cells are removed then that will be the end of the nightmare and you can get on with enjoying life.

All this stressing can’t be doing any of us any good and I have the added worry that I’ve been on Hrt for ten years and although I’ve read that there’s no connection to calcifications, I can’t help thinking that this might be the cause and I’ll have to stop it! Anyone here on Hrt too?
