Drinking too much Coke Zero

lynseyandthemonkeys · 09/05/2022 20:03

Anybody else drink far too much of this delicious elixir? I am completely (shamefully) addicted but I really want to give it up. On a wild day I could have 8 cans a day- I just love the fizz and the habit is hard to break. I'm trying to drink more squash/ water as I feel I'm putting on so much weight/bloat

Tell me your success stories 😁😁

Cherry Pepsi Max is my ambrosia of choice. So, similar.

Like you OP, I love the cold fizzy feeling on my tongue. I suppose if I were to try and lessen the amount of it I drink then sparkling water might replace the fizziness but I'd need to flavour it with something and I don't know what that something would be :/

Littlemissprosecco · 09/05/2022 21:18

Be careful how frequently you have fizzy drinks, they destroy your teeth

JuneJuly · 09/05/2022 21:22

Is that because of the carbonisation @Littlemissprosecco?

My worry is the amount of artificial sweetener being consumed, especially aspartame.

WeOnlyTalkAboutBruno · 09/05/2022 21:24

Yeah one of my old just had several teeth removed due to this habit. She’s 35 years old ffs 🙄

Cold turkey is the only way. I have a love hate relationship with Coke Zero. I am currently trying to break up with it again. I find after 3 days abstinence the cravings go.

Badger1970 · 09/05/2022 21:24

I find drinking it completely stalls my weight loss, even if I've eaten really well.

I weaned myself off it, and now drink sparkling mineral water with slices of lemon.

i think they destroy bones as well as teeth

Ikeameatballs · 09/05/2022 21:26

I’m an addict too. 3 cans/day on average. I get awful caffeine withdrawal headaches when I stop. No other caffeine though as no tea or coffee.

lynseyandthemonkeys · 09/05/2022 21:48

It's just so tough to break the addiction after years and years. I'm trying to drink sparkling water to get my 'bubble fix' but it is tough. I definitely feel it hinders weight loss as it raises insulin and play havoc with blood sugars etc.

This is my day one with it coke. So far it's been okayish but I assume it will get harder as the days move on

Diet sodas are linked to obesity as well as a plethora of adverse health effects.

It probably leeches calcium from the bones. It's a decent toilet cleaner though Wink

yes the carbonic acid will dissolve away your enamel, whether or not it is sweetened with sugars or sugar alternatives. So plain fizzy water is just as bad

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 10/05/2022 07:55

I broke the habit. I had similar to yours, 8 a day for years. I had so many teeth problems, have had 3 root canals.

I'm now at a stage where I am not a slave to the addiction. I can go 8 a day then the next have none. Successfully broke it and can easily give up. I had a bottle yesterday but its first in a week and don't feel the addiction anymore.

I gave up cold turkey in the beginning. Had headaches for days and felt so thirsty. I had squash and decaf coffee instead. I tried this a few times over the years before I'm ok now. You just need to get past the cold turkey stage. It's brutal but you can do it.

Samarie123 · 10/05/2022 07:56

Aspartame was introduced in the 80s and I was born in the 70s when things tasted better. I couldn't bare the oversweet taste of diet sodas. Even now there isn't much choice as it seems every bloody food and drink contains that shit!

It's really bad for you and is definitely NOT a healthy alternative! Some countries banned it previously.

Coughee · 10/05/2022 08:08

Blimey, 8 cans a day!! I think myself a bit of a diet Coke addict but the most I can manage is 2 a day and I've cut myself down to 1 a day. I don't really drink anything else except water so I find it hard to completely get rid of. 8 cans a day must play havoc with your stomach surely?

Firkinhavinalaugh · 10/05/2022 08:14

Cold turkey.

I stopped 4 years ago, haven’t had anything with aspartame in. Stomach issues have definitely improved :)

I didn’t and haven’t had any issues with my tooth enamel, bruxism has been my problem.

we bought a soda stream and when the fridge died we got one with a water dispenser which have made it much easier but that was a year or so in.

Sillystripytail · 10/05/2022 08:20

I'd say I'm addicted to Coke Zero but I only have 2 cans a day. I can make myself wait until the evening to have them too. I want to lose weight so I'm gonna have to go cold turkey soon😬

marshmallowmama · 10/05/2022 08:24

@Coughee it's a disgrace isn't it?!? I think my body is so used to it that I don't notice any more BUT I am finding I'm putting on weight and cannot shift it. I've gone from 8.5 stone to 11stone 10 in the space of a few years. I don't like it.

marshmallowmama · 10/05/2022 08:30

This is day two of no fizzy drinks so I'm aiming for a month ( personal challenge) then hopefully I'll feel better and be able to ditch it forever 😁

AutumnOcean · 10/05/2022 08:34

3 Pepsi Max cans a day for me over here. I once gave it up cold turkey for about 3 months and felt great. But unfortunately it's my one vice in life.

Sameiam · 10/05/2022 08:35

I'm on the high end of coke addiction I think 😅 I'm easily at 2l a day if I dont moderate. Been trying to give up having it in the house and just drinking it when I'm out or walking down to the shop and buying a single can if I really fancy it, which seems to be working.

Interestingly no cravings for it, as long as I have a coffee, i just like it. I can give it up without feeling anything but 'it would be nice to have one's.

My DB is addicted and weaning himself off a 10 can a day habit. He's lost 2 teeth. There should be a lot more education about the dangers of it.
Good luck op

saggyhairyass · 10/05/2022 08:42

I could do a large 2L bottle a day. Now ration to one 2L bottle a week...but I've done cold turkey before too and it worked. Headaches for a few days, then fine. My tooth enamel is wrecked, and the dentist has me on that special toothpaste now (£5 a tube!!). I fall off the wagon frequently, but you do feel sa lot better when on it.

There used to be a long running thread on here specifically for people addicted to Pepsi Max and giving it up! www.mumsnet.com/talk/general_health/4117701-Quitting-Pepsi-Max-in-2021-Support-Thread
