I had a nasty wrist fracture 9 weeks ago and had surgery and K Wires.
The wires and cast were removed 10 days ago and my wounds all look fine. I have a splint to wear till I'm back at hospital on Tues for xrays and check up with consultant. I have various other issues as well including an inability to move my hand or fingers as they said I have extensive nerve damage.

However the past 24hrs my arm has been aching really badly, all the way up to my elbow. It's not something I've experienced since the pins came Out. We've just noticed the colour of my hand, the skin is very mottled and I've not had this before either.

Just checking that this is a normal part of recovery and doesnt warrant being seen before Tuesday?
Thanks

Hi, I don't know but I would definitely call 111 to be assessed if I were you

BotCrossHuns · 08/05/2022 18:26

I'd call 111 too. When I've had a cast etc, they've said things like colour change or pins and needles are worth going in to be checked.

Did you have nerve damage before the surgery, or was it caused during it? I hope you will be able to move hand and fingers again - that's really scary if you can't.

JuneOsborne · 08/05/2022 18:29

Have you taken your temperature? Do you feel at all unwell?

I don't like the look, or sound of that. Definitely call 111, and be prepared to go to hospital if it gets any worse.

You poor love you've been through a lot.

withacherryonthetop · 08/05/2022 18:31

I would get that seen to before Tuesday

BlanketsBanned · 08/05/2022 18:35

Is your hand and fingers warm. Are you able to take your pulse. I would call 111 or get seen in hospital.

AMBE123 · 08/05/2022 18:35

That looks to me like it might've some kind of infection inside the hand, call 111
If you press a glass on it does the discolouration stay or go?
Hope you get full use of your hand back in the end

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 08/05/2022 18:37

Mottled skin can be caused by compromised blood flow so I'd definitely get that checked out asap.

Mya2022 · 08/05/2022 19:23

Thanks all. Hand feels warm, no temperature at normal pulse. I don't feel unwell just very achey in that area.
I will try and get down to minor injuries tonight before they shut at 9. Typically my husband is working tonight and have 2 young children :(

Yes get medical help asap, I’m not a health professional but last year I had a dvt (blood clot in my leg) and it looked like this. Of course it might not be that, but if it is then it is a medical emergency. Good luck, hope you get seen soon.

Kat1953 · 08/05/2022 19:33

Another one to urge you to seek medical help.
Are you lucky enough to have a minor injuries near you?

Check your capillary refill in your nails. Gentle squeeze the them, they'll blanche and when release should flush with colour pretty quickly. If they look remotely slower than the refill on your other hand, just go to a&e.

Lougle · 08/05/2022 19:37

You need to be seen to check that out.

alexdgr8 · 08/05/2022 19:38

if i were you, i'd go to A&E. now.
all the best.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 08/05/2022 19:39

Please get this seen in person today OP, don't wait until tomorrow or later. Just in case - it's not worth the risk if there could be any infection.

DrAddisonForbesMontgomery · 08/05/2022 19:43

I agree I think you should go and be seen at minor injuries this evening. Hope everything is OK.

Mya2022 · 08/05/2022 19:52

Thanks all. On my way there in 5. My mums taking me and sisters watching children. Will update after minor injuries

BotCrossHuns · 08/05/2022 19:58

Good luck! I hope there's nothing (further) wrong, and that the surgery didn't cause the nerve damage or any ongoing problems like this. Wishing you a speedy recovery back to normal function!!

AmberGer · 08/05/2022 20:00

Looks like a circulation issue to me (not a professional, just my opinion)

MadeForThis · 08/05/2022 20:06

Does your hand feel hotter or colder than the other?

2pointfourmonkeys · 08/05/2022 21:12

If all cleared from infection or other more acute cause, I'd be thinking Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome. As well as (some) pain this can cause swelling, skin changes, muscle weakness and a whole rage of weird symptoms.

PamelaD00ve · 08/05/2022 21:14

Good luck op, glad you're getting checked 👍

longtompot · 08/05/2022 23:06

I don't think the skin changes happen that quickly with CRPS. My ed has it and I can't remember hers happening that quickly. Oh, and it's not some pain, it's the worst pain you can imagine.
It does look like there is some circulation issue op, maybe because of nerve damage. I hope you've found out what's happening by now @Mya2022

BreadAndWater · 08/05/2022 23:08

Hope your ok OP

Mya2023 · 08/05/2022 23:12

Hi, it's me the OP but I've had to set up on a different account as I can't log in now for some reason
I was sent to A&E from minor injuries. They ruled out anything worrying relating to circulation but have diagnosed it as trigger finger (my ring finger is pulling down and I have a lump on the palm of my hand which you can actually see on the pic as a darker patch). She said the inflammation causing it may be causing the skin discoloration. She spoke to orthopedics who were happy to not see me tonight based on my obs and the fact in in on tues, but now I have my fingers strapped together to try and prevent it worsening.
Feeling very deflated. Thanks so much to everyone who responded to me

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 08/05/2022 23:29

Good that it wasn't anything serious OP. Hopefully they can sort it on Tuesday.

2pointfourmonkeys · 09/05/2022 05:05

@longtompot sorry your experience of CRPS is so bad. I think it can come in a whole range of pain levels. My friend had it post wrist fracture straight from dressings post op and for her the pain was never the worst symptom, especially early on.
