Any top tips for removing a tampon when the string has come off?

I have just tried to remove a tampon, and the string has come off. I would like to try to get it out without going to the Drs, anyone else ever had this, and if so, what did you do?

did you get on ok at the nurse?

DumbledoreWithBoughsOfHolly · 04/01/2008 16:52

Just as an aside, I want to ask anyone who has had this happen to them: do you check the string before putting the tampon in? I once read that you should do this and I would never insert one without tugging on the string first. I am just wondering if that is sufficient to avoid this situation or does the string sometimes come away after it has been checked for security.

nannyL · 04/01/2008 17:18

i used to always tug the string 1st.... but now i use a mooncup i dont need to

would never use anything other than my mooncup again!

MrsMopple · 04/01/2008 18:17

The nurse got it out easily, but told me a few horror stories before she tried (how kind!)
BTW laundrylover, I have got a mooncup, but it lurks at the back of a cupboard in the bathroom. Maybe I'll give it another go
next time!

That's good MrsMopple!

Have you one in now or are you going to stick to pads?

Did it hurt?

suwoo · 04/01/2008 22:34

God, it must just me me then but I KNOW I wouldn't be able to lose anything up there, is everyones cervix longer than their fingers?? Thats a serious question...

expatinscotland · 04/01/2008 22:35

i use a mooncup with no stem.

bookwormmum · 04/01/2008 22:36

Reminds me why I never got the hang of the female condom - it's not a good look squatting to retrieve one that slipped sideways up your fanjo. Pre-children as well!!

Sidge · 04/01/2008 22:37

Glad she retrieved it MrsMopple!

I'm a practice nurse and have had to do this for women loads of times. One woman's had been up there a whole month - she forgot to take it out at the end of her period and only realised when her next period started and she couldn't get a new one in

She needed antibiotics

LittleBellasRingingInTheNew · 04/01/2008 22:41

Can I ask a question here? Is it possible for a tampon to "go missing" in your fanny?

What would happen if you left one in and forgot about it? (Am having such senior moments recently that I really had a bit of a worry about this recently!)

Sidge · 04/01/2008 22:43

Sort of, LittleBella.

A tampon can go up the side of the cervix and be 'hidden'. Unless you can reach to have a really good root around it can seem lost.

It can't go through the cervix though.

If you left one in for any length of time you would probably get an infection.

bookwormmum · 04/01/2008 22:43

Sidge - that's awful

orangehead · 04/01/2008 22:43

I once got my cap struck, it took the practice nurse and 3 docs to get it out. Very embarrassing

expatinscotland · 04/01/2008 22:44

remember cod's 'pouch of douglad' thread ?

lol!

where do lost tampons and ripped condoms go?

they've seen it all before, folks.

don't be embarrassed.

LittleBellasRingingInTheNew · 04/01/2008 22:44

You would know as well wouldn't you? Wouldn't you have discharge and smells? (Reassures herself)

I went to the doctor and he just said "well you've had a look, haven't you?" So I still have a slight nagging fear that I might have left one there. But as it was the period before last, I think that's unlikely.

LittleBellasRingingInTheNew · 04/01/2008 22:45

What was that pouch of douglas thing? Did she lose one?

expatinscotland · 04/01/2008 22:46

not embarrasing, orange!

i worked in a women's clinic and we had more than one woman who had her IUD go migratory.

the director even found one IUD in the placenta of a baby she delivered.

expatinscotland · 04/01/2008 22:46

she lost one, bella, and the nurse had to open a window once she dug it out.

LittleBellasRingingInTheNew · 04/01/2008 22:51

omg

how did she know she'd lost it?

Must do a search....

suwoo · 04/01/2008 22:51

Expat, my mooncup has no thread, I literally shaved it off to make sure. It still protrudes 2cm ish outside the old fanjo.

expatinscotland · 04/01/2008 22:53

oh, hell no, su! i wang that thing up there!

i don't want to feel it.

but i'm very familiar with my anatomy and not at all shy about my body.

i think she knew it was lost, bella, when she went to retrieve it and couldn't get it out.

it's an old thread.

expatinscotland · 04/01/2008 22:53

i hate pads. they give me thrush.

Threadworm · 04/01/2008 22:54

Glad you got it out.

This would have been my fallback suggestion.

SpawnChorus · 04/01/2008 22:54

expat - wow!!

LittleBellasRingingInTheNew · 04/01/2008 22:57

can't find it

I have a dread of leaving tampons and losing them and not realising.

You can't do that with a mooncup, i'm sure they don't just go missing somewhere in your insides...
