tiredandgrumps · 19/12/2021 19:12

DH has a cold and a tickly cough, not covid thankfully just a cold.
We're on day three.
He's been taking covonia tickly cough medicine, has had an antihistamine and some honey and lemon.
What else can he do to help it?
It's driving me mental listening to him coughing every couple of minutes day and night I'm ready to smother him with a pillow Smile

Co-codamol! I'm not sure if this would be recommended by a Dr, but having suffered with terrible coughs all my life I did a bit of research and read that codeine is a cough suppressant. It is the only thing that works for me. Obviously it shouldn't be taken for more than a few days as can be addictive, but the odd one to get some sleep works a treat.

Haggisfish3 · 19/12/2021 19:25

Yes you can get codeine cough syrup.

Summerofcontent · 19/12/2021 19:26

Cough mixture used to contain codine because it suppresses coughing

3luckystars · 19/12/2021 19:28

Vicks on his feet and wear socks over them tonight going to bed.

userxx · 19/12/2021 19:29

Spare bedroom ? Air bnb ?

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 19/12/2021 19:31

Phocodine linctus (from pharmacist). It's brilliant stuff.

Rainbows246 · 19/12/2021 19:31

I was going to suggest Vicks on feet. I had an awful tickly cough with a virus recently and nothing I tried seem to work. I tried fluids warm and cold, anti histamine, steaming, cough mixture of different types. Nothing massively helped and it was causing me to cough till I was nearly sick. Eased but took a while to go. I was fine asleep weirdly.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 19/12/2021 19:32

*Pholcodine (damn the lack of an edit button)

Maverick66 · 19/12/2021 19:32

Vicks on soles of feet .
Suck a booked sweet/losenge

tiredandgrumps · 19/12/2021 19:56

Ohh thank you all I had no idea about codeine being a cough suppressant! I'll be at the pharmacy first thing.
Vicks on his feet isn't touching it unfortunately, that's always my go to with DD and usually works.
He's on the sofa tonight (no spare room unfortunately) so we can hopefully all get a bit of sleep.

I've had a tickly cough for a couple of days, done a lateral flow because of work and I actually have covid. Only symptom is the cough Sad

DartmoorChef · 19/12/2021 20:01

Manuka honey and lemon with hot water. Let it cool and just sip. Manuka honey is one of nature's best medicines

GoodnightGrandma · 19/12/2021 20:02

A tea spoon of honey.

I found cough sweets or throat lozenges to be really helpful. I suffer with a lot of coughs sadly Sad

StopGo · 19/12/2021 20:05

Codeine Linctus taken with care is the answer

bananaandoears · 19/12/2021 20:06

@tiredandgrumps ah that's good that covid has been ruled out, there is so much other stuff out there at the minute. Hope DH cough resolved soon

tiredandgrumps · 19/12/2021 20:06

We have honey and lemon until one of us can get to the pharmacy tomorrow so hopefully that helps a bit tonight!

Flonase type thing

SpanielsAreMyLife · 19/12/2021 20:13

Oh God, I share your pain. DH has had a chest infection for nearly 3 weeks and then got Covid on top........ he's got an inhaler, antibiotics and he's still bloody coughing Hmm.

He's lucky I've had Covid too because that's the only reason that he's not under the patio right now. Codeine is a great cough suppressant, just don't tell the pharmacist that's why you want it as they tend to get very arsey about it. Night Nurse works well too.

Malibuismysecrethome · 19/12/2021 20:17

Glycerine, lemon and honey linctus is my go to for dry coughs.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 19/12/2021 20:20

Indigestion tablets / liquid. Doctor told me that apparently some tickley coughs are due to scarring on your throat being aggravated by stomach acid. Doesn’t work all the time for me but about 75% of the time

Hahaha yes I feel this. I think I'd be okay if he was just getting on with it while coughing but he's proper nursing it 🙄 I'll be there for the pharmacy opening it's doors tomorrow 😂

Broncho Stop pastilles were amazing when I had a chest infection last month, I still needed to go to work and needed to calm the coughing down and these were a miracle also stopped the coughing long enough for me to get some sleep.
