2WeeksTillChristmas · 08/12/2021 21:20

Yep. I have

Have you been to the dentist, this should always be your first call, to have xrays and get a proper diagnosis if you havent already

They made me a teeth guard but i cant breath with the bloody thing

It can last afew weeks at a time

Starrr123 · 08/12/2021 21:26

@2WeeksTillChristmas yes i have, they have referred me to oral max. Have to have a jaw mri. Ive been like this on and off for over a year. My new mouth guard they hve done soooo tight! So going back next week!
What symptoms do u get with urs ? Mine has been bad bad since mid October:( so fed up! I have a little baby to look after :( x

OP posts:
2WeeksTillChristmas · 08/12/2021 21:29

Thats a loooong time
Are they sure its that?
Good they are going to do a MRI though, thats reassuring

Are you on a good pain killer

I was on a very low antidepressant for the pain

I have alot of other conditions so its difficult to know what symptoms are connected to what

Have you spoke to the GP too?
I suppose its harder because of Covid.

I dont suppose you have the option of going private? There are some options where you can pay monthly if this is possible

Pain in the head is one of the hardest things to deal with imo

Starrr123 · 08/12/2021 21:33

@2WeeksTillChristmas ive had a brain neck and spine mri all clear!
They keep saying ita probably tmj! But its been going on for ages. My top teeth back right teeth ache alot! And my ear pains! They have offered me botox!
They offered me amatriptyline but i refused whilst i was pregnant. But i may ask for it again! Im only on paracetamol.
I only used to soft splint but it doesn’t help.
I paid to see a private ENT cause of the ear pain and he said to me he thinks its tmj.
My dentist is also private and they think its that too. But im gonna try an osteopath on thursday next week.
Its just painful :(
What symptoms did you get? X

OP posts:
Starrr123 · 08/12/2021 21:34

@2WeeksTillChristmas sorry you said you arent sure if they are connected.
Its just so worrying as i keep thinking its something bad :( but all my tests are normal! He said if my jaw mri is clear then he thinks its muscles related . X

OP posts:
2WeeksTillChristmas · 08/12/2021 21:46

As you have had a brain scan i will tell you my symtoms…

Its very reassuring that all the tests you have had so far are clear

I started with pains in my ear / face / neck, shoulder.

Dentist and doctor said TMJ but started to have other issues, after a brain scan i was diagnosed with a brain tumour but its non cancerous and may never grow or only grow very slowly but i will go deaf on that side, so its hard to know what symptoms Are from TMJ or from the tumour and i have fibromyalgia
But i am also on amatriptyline and its very good, im on 50mg…
I started on 10mg and went up slowly, make sure you take it 12 hours before you wake up, so for example if you wake at 6am, take it at 6pm, in the beginning it made me sleepy when i took it but after afew weeks, it settled and it now works very well

Starrr123 · 08/12/2021 21:53

@2WeeksTillChristmas ooo im so glad its not cancerous!!!!
Do you have to have regular scans? They would of pucked it up wouldnt they? If i had anything ?
Ooo bless you :( thats horrible having a few things on :( i hope
Your coping ok?
I was on nortriptyline 10mg but i couldnt sleep at all! So had to take it in the AM but made me super depressed!

I may take the botox tbh!
Im just sooo fed up! My teeth aching is the worst thing!
I am
Super anxious person! My shoulders and neck is sooo tight! My whole body is so tense! X

OP posts:
2WeeksTillChristmas · 08/12/2021 22:05

They would of picked it up if you had something, 100% those scans are very detailed

You should try the botox, stress and anxiety are only going to make you feel worse, but hay, if they was easy to control, Noone would be stressed !

I had to have two scans then another scan 6 monthly x 2 and its been stable with no growth, so next scan is a year, and if still ok it goes to 2 years and so on…

You should talk to the dr about different pain meds, its important you get on the right one for you.

Have you been offered a muscle relaxer?

Starrr123 · 08/12/2021 22:18

Oo thats good that they are staying on top of it :)
Yes apparently the amatriptyline is meant to be good! May try the botox first as that will relax all the muscles.
They havent offered me any muscles relaxers. My neurologist did mention about trigemal neuralgia. But the oral dr and my gp
Dont think its that as mine is an ache, mroe than electric shocks! So im abit confused.
Tbh the nhs have been so quick with seeing me etc! Ill see what my dentist suggest next week.
I had. A hearing test and my hearing she said was very good. Ive started to have ear ringing on both ears. But i did have an ear infection in both ears but they are still super aore but not sure if its the tmj. My go wont do much as ive been reffered x

Glad they seem on top of your care

Good luck with everything

Downunderduchess · 09/12/2021 04:00

For me it’s been years with Bruxism (grinding/clenching teeth), it’s pretty much my default situation, so at night I wear a mouth guard. I am getting Botox injections in two weeks, I’ve had them before, it did help slightly but wears off after a few months.

I’m desperate for help with it, so painful at times.

Starrr123 · 09/12/2021 08:09

@Downunderduchess sorry your going through it for sooo long.
What symptoms do you get?
And what other things have you tried? X

OP posts:
Starrr123 · 09/12/2021 08:10

@Downunderduchess also with the botox did you get any side effects?
Im abit nervous to get it but i feel so desprate:( x

OP posts:
Downunderduchess · 09/12/2021 12:26

No side effects at all from the Botox, very easy procedure, not painful. I have always had problems with my ears, sinuses etc. I take medication for anxiety, it helps with my mental health but the physical symptoms- jaw clenching etc. still happens. I often wake up with headaches. Everything is connected, swollen ears canal affects the rest of the face etc. etc. During the day I try to be mindful of what I am doing, for example, if you press your lips together your teeth cannot clench at the same time, try chewing gum to relax the jaw. Give Botox a try if you can. I was also desperate for a solution, even something that minimises the pain, for some type of relief. Good luck!

Starrr123 · 09/12/2021 12:47

Ooo thats very good :) i think i will try it :) thankyou for your reply! Ill definitely give it wgo! What antidepressants was u on? Theyve offered me citalopram but oral max said can make things worse! So abit scared! Did the botox help with ear pain x

OP posts:
Starrr123 · 09/12/2021 12:47

@Downunderduchess xx

OP posts:
Downunderduchess · 10/12/2021 00:56

I take Sertraline for my anxiety, it’s definitely helped, not affected the other issue one way or another I don’t think. I’ve had bad ears my whole life since I was a baby, had my tonsils out when I was four. I think it’s just one of those things some people are affected by & others not at all.

I did have a GP ask me once if I had eczema as a child, I did. She said there is a connection between that & ear issues etc. I thought that was interesting.

Starrr123 · 15/01/2022 15:31

@Downunderduchess how are you after the botox ? Xx

OP posts:
Downunderduchess · 17/01/2022 03:26

@Starrr123 I had to cancel they had a Covid exposure, so closed for a week. I have to reschedule!

fleapriest · 19/01/2022 15:15

Could I hijack the thread-

I had a particularly bad ear infection at the beginning of November. Two lots of antibiotics to clear it up, but the pain continued along with swelling in my neck.

I was seen by ent who did a hearing test and examined my ears- they thought it was possibly arthritis/tmj. But no notes were put on my medical record.

I've seen the dentist who gave the all clear regarding teeth, I don't grind them. He offered a mouth guard.

I'm concerned because the pain is still so intense, in my neck, ear, teeth and jaw.
I paid for Botox before Christmas, and that's had no effect.

I'm awaiting an appointment for my bloods to be done in Feb. But I'm frustrated that I'm not getting anywhere.

Have you got any suggestions to what I should be suggesting to my gp?

Thanks so much in advance

Starrr123 · 19/01/2022 15:59

@fleapriest hi!!!
I would ask about tmj and trigeminal neuralgia. Mine started with awful ear and neck pain! They put it down to tmj!! Ask for a referal to oral surgeon !
Im cures in agony! Mine has been like it for over a year xx

OP posts:
fleapriest · 19/01/2022 16:13

@Starrr123 thanks so much. Going to give them a ring now.
Would it be the gp that makes the referral not the dentist?

Starrr123 · 19/01/2022 16:56

I would try both!!! My dentist done mine xx but either! I wpuld definitely push for it.
Hopefully some medication and a mouth guard will help. Mine is from clenching! Xx
