Phenergan for sleep?

momiamarichman · 14/10/2021 14:57

This has been recommended to me by a psychiatrist today to try and help my sleep problems. I'm currently using melatonin (3mg) which hasn't helped me much and he actually said melatonin isn't really helpful unless you're a child or over 55 apparently! (My gp recommended it to me ages ago so unsure as to why she'd do that if it's not very effective!Envy)

Has anyone had any luck/good experiences/bad experiences with promethazine? I'm so exhausted, barely getting 2 hours of sleep a night. Sad

I've taken it for sleep, and it did help! It felt quite a natural sleep and I didn't feel groggy the next day. Took about 2 hours before bed , and had my first full nights sleep in a long time!

HeyDuggeesFavouriteSquirrel · 14/10/2021 15:03

Yes, I've used it. I really helped me get back into a routine. Used it for about a week and I was back to normal.

Seeline · 14/10/2021 15:07

I was given it for morning sickness. It really helped with that but turned me into a complete zombie! I could barely function during the day which wasn't ideal with a toddler. I suppose it would depend on the dosage and when you took it.

momiamarichman · 14/10/2021 15:14

Hmm sounds like it's worth a try then! Hopefully I don't feel groggy, going to start on 10mg Smile thanks everyone!

Yep... when I need it, I take about 1 hour before bed. I find I have a reasonably good sleep without being drowsy in the morning. I once took 20mg on a long haul flight though and hallucinated 😬

HunterHearstHelmsley · 14/10/2021 15:44

I use phenergen regularly. I wouldn't be without it.

I take 75mg about 3 hours before sleep. If I have an early morning I'll take 40-50mg as I can be a little drowsy in the morning.

I find it so bonkers how differently different people react. 20mg wouldn't touch the sides for me Grin

Yes! I was in a psych hospital last year and was given Phenergan for a while. It worked wonders.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 14/10/2021 16:00

If you're buying it over the counter, tell them it's for allergies. Pharmacists don't like to give it out for sleep, but obviously you've been advised by a professional. I have it on prescription but do have to buy over the counter every now and then (usually if I'm traveling and have forgotten to pack it), I've had to show my repeat prescription info in the past.

CelloYouveGotABass · 14/10/2021 16:01

Yeah it’s brilliant, but I find the effects last about 12h, so if I want to be up at 6:30, I make sure I’ve taken it by 6:30pm - otherwise I feel hungover the next day. I don’t mind sacrificing the odd evening for the sake of a good catch up sleep

RocioMartinez · 14/10/2021 16:08

Yes. My GP was happy to prescribe it for me.

ShowerOfShite · 14/10/2021 16:15

It made me feel dreadful, zombie like the following day.

HuckleberryJam · 14/10/2021 16:19

I find Amitriptyline excellent for sleep and mood and never feel groggy the next day. I only take a small dose

melonhead · 14/10/2021 16:32

Can you buy it over the counter? Is it syrup or tablets?

FrangipanFlower · 14/10/2021 16:34

Husband takes it (recommended by GP) but we frequently get the third degree in Boots when purchasing it, so make sure you say it’s for travel sickness or allergies, as a PP has said.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 14/10/2021 16:35

I'd start with a low dose as you don't know how it will affect you — for me, I need at least double the usual dose for zopiclone and zolpidem, but even the smaller phenergan dose knocks me out for 12 hours.

danni0509 · 14/10/2021 16:36

My 7 year old is prescribed this. 10mg. Haven’t tried him on it yet, he’s been on melatonin for years and they stopped that now and swapped him to this, I know he’s only a child but I’ll follow this thread with interest.

Any idea how long before bed to give it? His melatonin is always 45-60 mins before.

I have taken it,sleep well then feel vile the next day.

Nat6999 · 15/10/2021 02:04

I used to take it but got fed up of being given the third degree at the pharmacy, I started buying it online but have now moved to Melatonin, I take 12mg per night.

Aquamarine1029 · 15/10/2021 02:16

How old are you? Could peri-menopause be a factor?

That’s not true, it’s sold branded as Sominex OTC specifically for sleep.

Me too. I use it most days. Boots normally question me so I try to go to different shops and I say it’s for travel sickness. They must wonder when I’m actually going to go away.
