“ the worst cold ever”

Anyone else suffering from what BBC dubbed the worst cold ever?? I’ve Recently recovered from Covid and this genuinely feels worse Confused

Started with a sore throat and blocked nose, quickly progressed to me sobbing when i swallow as felt like glass, endless coughing fits and feeling quite breathless any time I move. Covid tests ( LFT and PCR are negative) - GP says it’s viral and to continue to rest. My back and chest feel painful and bruised from the soreness of the coughing fits and I need suggestions of home remedies to suppress the cough until I can get out tomorrow for supplies!

All ideas welcome!

We've got it here too. Thankfully mone disappeared as quickly as it came. The kids are having a tougher time shaking it though. Everyone at work as it too. I drank loads only time it didn't hurt was when I had a warm drink.

Imkindreally · 29/09/2021 18:53

Glad to hear it passed quickly I’m on day 3 and feeling mightily sorry for myself! I’ve drink endless green tea with lemon and honey, sprayed difflam as often as I’m allowed and whined to DH every 3 mins about how unwell I feel Grin

To help with my coughs when had previous colds, I used something menthol in a bowl of boiling hot water with a damp cold tea towel over it as helps put moisture in the air and also then menthol helped clear my sinuses, I used to use toothpaste as a go to

I’m just recovering from this. Could hardly stay awake Fri - Sun, still have a dreadful cough and sore throat today. I haven’t been this ill since I had flu in 1992!

Imkindreally · 29/09/2021 19:07

I have some vicks so will get that going!

Sorry to hear you’re unwell too - it’s awful isn’t it - I want to just sleep but it’s in snatches due to the coughing ( and children about ) - so I’m flopped most of day but not actually sleeping Sad

We are all just starting with it today

itsme · 29/09/2021 19:11

I have it too and it hurts my chest and I'm breathless (neg Covid tests). This is knocking me out. Same as @DecorChange my throat is only soothed with a warm drink.

pizzaobsessed · 29/09/2021 19:13

We've all had it, though it was thankfully short-lived and I was over the worst of it within 2.5 days. It was Sudafed that dried it up for me, ibuprofen did nothing

Etinox · 29/09/2021 19:17

Eugh you poor things!
We’re going through it at the moment, so far I’ve been spared 🙏
Night nurse, Day nurse, Vicks and sage tea for sore throat.

Still recovering, the whole family had it. It's really zapped my energy and all of us felt rotten.

Gizmo98765 · 29/09/2021 19:20

I had it last week. I got some honey for my sore throat and had a spoonful when I fancied. I alternated between Lemsip, homemade concoctions of hot lemonade, lemon and ginger and honey, then icy cold drinks and lots of rest. Today is the first day without relying on Lemsips and hard coughing.

All our LFT’s and PCR negative. DS had it first and thought it was clearing up but he is back to sneezing tonight but was also contact traced tonight as one of his friends tested positive for covid yesterday.

MajorCarolDanvers · 29/09/2021 19:22

My DM, DH and DD have all had it. They were so miserable. Poor souls.

Fortunately me and DS have escaped it.

Imkindreally · 29/09/2021 19:26

So sorry to hear so many have it and are feeling rotten Sad

I am planning on getting a cough suppressant yesterday as I feel like I’d feel so much better without the fits of coughing because the pain in my chest and back is the worst

I've got it. Had first day off work in ten years yesterday and that's after working in the nhs right through the pandemic!
Feel better today though it's moving on to my chest now. Also lft negative and no covid symptoms. It's just a crappy cold.

Cervicalflop · 29/09/2021 19:29

No cough here but the last few weeks I have been riddled with a snotty nose, bunged up, watering eyes and the bloody constant sneezing is ridiculous so much so that DH has to walk out the room as the noise bothers him. I've been doing the COVID tests but its not covid.
I've tried decongestants, painkillers, nasal sprays etc but there just is no relief.
To top it off I cant take a proper breath sometimes and have to use an inhaler the doctor gave me previously to help when I had a chest infection. Can't actually get through to make an appointment but the breathing thing is a bit of a worry.

PrincessPaws · 29/09/2021 19:30

Smother the soles of your feet with Vicks (put thick socks on top!) when you go to bed. Not sure how but it really does reduce the coughing

whatswithtodaytoday · 29/09/2021 19:31

I've had a terrible cough, whole family PCR negative but I've never had a cough that made me feel breathless like this before. Not even when I probably has Covid in March last year!

Chosennone · 29/09/2021 19:32

Anyone have gastro issues. My DP and DD have had bad tummys and some vomiting alongside cold symptoms!? I've had had a fuzzy head, achey joints and sniffles for over a week! Countless negative LFT. Get well soon everyone.

PiesNotGuys · 29/09/2021 19:35

Feeling rotten over here too, also covid negative but genuinely felt like I couldn’t move this morning, splitting headaches and sore throat, I had to pluck up my courage just to roll over in bed.

I’m having to sett my alarm for 6am tomorrow to give myself enough time to get paracetamol in and probably at least two warm drinks whilst propped upright, just to feel well enough to get the kids to school and face the walk to work.

Sympathy op.

Mamamamasaurus · 29/09/2021 19:38

I'm just getting over it, it was fucking awful and I was convinced it was covid. DD tested positive last week so that made sense. My PCR tests were negative, as were the LFTs.

321zyx · 29/09/2021 19:38

DS 19 has had this (the worst I've seen him), still coughing 3 weeks later - negative PCR. I assumed I would catch it but only got to the sore throat stage then recovered.

iklboo · 29/09/2021 19:39

Same here. I spent all day in bed Monday, kept falling asleep. Everything aches, I've got an annoying cough, shivers, no appetite.

CV19 tests negative, I'm double jabbed as well. Heavens help us if we get flu if a cold feels like this.

slowtik · 29/09/2021 19:40

Yes! I had it for 3 weeks. Steroids for asthma. Antibiotics for chest infection. Me on my 3rd week of laryngitis

DoubleHelix79 · 29/09/2021 19:45

Try adding honey to half an onion and letting it sit for a few hours. The resulting liquid is one of the most disgusting things I've ever tasted, but it does wonders for a cough. I only use it when I'm desperate.

Flickeringgreenlight · 29/09/2021 19:48

Ohh we have been having tummy issues on and off for the past month. DS had it with cold like symptoms but DH and I had so far been cold symptom free. We just assumed it's nursery but it's been on and off for a while and it's so draining!
