Bloody Diarrhoea

Dreamer1989 · 15/08/2021 12:33

I had onset of diarrhoea last night, after dinner. I assumed it was the food not agreeing with me. Went to sleep hoping it was all over. Woke @ 4am with bad stomach pains, lots more diarrhoea. Took imodium and cocodamol, tried to go back to sleep. Woke this morning @ 11am, now there is blood in the diarrhoea. Its not anal fissure or piles, its blood/mucus coming out. Im waiting for 111 to call me back. Im scared

Hand hold - I'm sure it will be something easily rectified but you did the right thing calling 111.

I've actually known at least three people to have had this in the past and each one was caused by a different infection.

Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids x

How are you feeling now @Dreamer1989 ?

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 15/08/2021 16:40

Its fairly common in food poisoning, so don't worry too much. However I'd get a sample to your GP if it on-going to check.

I had it when I had campylobacter!

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 15/08/2021 16:43

Bloody diarrhoea is pretty common if you've got a nasty stomach bug! Please do get it checked out though, for peace of mind if anything.

Blood in stools is usually only a serious concern if it's black or tar-like, in which case you get to hospital yesterday.

I hope you feel better soon!

Dreamer1989 · 15/08/2021 17:09

The 111 wanted me to go to A&E but I said id rather speak to a dr first, seemed a bit extreme but I get the workers are just reading from a computer script. The ooh GP rang me back about an hour ago, said he would ideally see me in clinic today, but said he was okay for me to stay at home as long as I kept an eye on myself ie pulse ox, heart rate and the pain levels. I havent had another episode of blood or diarrhoea in 3 hiurs.

OP posts:
Dreamer1989 · 15/08/2021 17:22

Thank you all, it was horrific to see, just panic as the stomach pain was so bad. I knew I didnt need A&E, just reassurance. I also didnt want to leave the house as being near a toilet is what I need.

OP posts:
WorldsBestBoss · 15/08/2021 17:36

Did they say what they thought it might be?

brazenandstrange · 15/08/2021 17:36

I had campylobacter from raw chicken and it lasted a week. All diarrhoea, no sickness and quite a bit of blood. The pain was like childbirth at times. I ended up in A&E on a drip for dehydration in the end.

Hope you feel better soon! Do go
To A&E if you think you're dehydrated or can't keep water down. Mine just came out the other end in an almost water state!

Dreamer1989 · 15/08/2021 17:45

I can keep liquid down easily, not stopped drinking as I was aware of being dehydrated. Ive just had some plain doritos as I wanted something savoury and easy.
Dr asked if Id had any new food or takeaways recently, I said the only thing Id had I could blame is I defrosted some smoked salmon, had eated that about an hour before all this started. Never eating salmon again!

I havent needed the toilet in about 5 hours now and the pain is probably a 2/10

Do not take Imodium (GP told me, if you have food poisoning or an allergy it needs to come out, not stay in!)
I hope you feel better soon..

Dreamer1989 · 15/08/2021 18:30

I only took it once at 4am, I do get what you mean totally, I wont take it again. I was desperate for the pain to stop.

OP posts:
brazenandstrange · 15/08/2021 18:57

In contrast I was told to take Imodium more regularly than the packet said, told by an A&E consultant.

Also the BRAT diet to give the stomach a rest. Banana. Rice. Apple. Toast.

Dreamer1989 · 16/08/2021 09:24

Just spoken to my GP, its sample time! Two of the buggers. She also confirmed I shouldnt have taken immodium, as it needs to get out asap, rather than staying in me! You live and learn.

You can get dood poisoning from salad too unfortunately. Giardia can cause bloody diarrhoea but luckily you are feeling better quite quickly, so hopefully you don't have that ( the antibiotics for giardia make you feel grim ime)

And reheated rice. Pretty much anything can give you food poisoning I suppose.

I went to collect the sample pots from GP, she has ordered poo sample to check for calprotectin and bacteria. Does anyone know how fresh the samples have to be, ie if I took it to them at 4pm, is that too late in the day?

You will need to ask your GP surgery as it depends what time they have a collection.
TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 18/08/2021 02:07

Should be fine for the bacterial culture, but I'm sure you've already got it
in by now, hope you are feeling better soon!

Dreamer1989 · 18/08/2021 18:18

I havent managed a sample yet! Taking the immodium and cocodamol for the pain has meant no poo for 3 days

Dear Beauty This is incorrect. Fresh blood also needs to be investigated. In fact any type of blood in your stool
Dreamer1989 · 18/08/2021 21:33

It was red fresh blood. I dont have external piles and its not a fissure as Ive had surgery to cure mine and I know that pain!

I managed it! Very constipated thanks to the drugs, but two samples handed in. Could see lot of blood, like (sorry) clotted bits.
