Anyone else's dc got this horrible coughing/temp virus?

Dd has been coughing for a few days but seems well in herself otherwise. Ds (almost 3yrs) however is now running a temp with it and is exhausted How long is it likely to last and when do I start worrying about chest infections etc (he had pneumonia last year so I get a bit paranoid about it)? HELP!

yes - my DS has it

he has been coldy and coughy for a week (snotty but well enough to be at nursery) but had a bad couple of days

took him to the GP yesterday and it is viral and his chest is clear

told us to keep him dosed up on calpol/nurofen etc

wish your DS better

scattyspice · 27/11/2007 20:02

We've all had it.

Obviously DH has had it the worst (and for 4 weeks!!)

LoveMyGirls · 27/11/2007 20:04

Yep mine is too, shes been in bed an hour now and i've been up and down like a yo yo and dp is working late and i'm tired and the place is a mess so im hiding on here!

I've been....
dosing up
put olbas oil on tissue in her room
vicks on her chest
and topping her up with fluids
getting her to eat what i can (not alot)

If you are worried take him to the doctors, mums instinctively know when something is not right so trust yourself.

DANCESwithHughJackman · 27/11/2007 21:43

Thanks everyone. I've just been up to ds who had woken up very upset. It's pants when they are ill

Yep, the 2 youngest dd4 is 4 and has atshma too so I try to keep well on top of colds/coughs but this one is a real fiesty bugger!

Ds1 is neary 1 and this is the 1st really bad cough/cold he has had and it's knowcked him for six Benylin coughs and cold is really good and can be given with ibrufen and calpol which is great for nightime dosing

Olbas oil is a great help too

Elibean · 27/11/2007 23:10

Both my dds have had it (if its the same one) but as dd1 (3) is asthmatic, and dd2 (1) has laryngomalacia, I got them both checked out when the cough got bad - and dd1 needed ABs.

I think the worst of it lasted 5 days or so, but the cough lingered and lingered...in me, too. If you're worried, Dances, I'd get his chest listened to by GP tomorrow? Peace of mind worth a lot!

Magnolia, sorry to hear your ds and dd are ill too...and will steal your Benelyn tip for next virus. We've had one after t'other here

yummers · 29/11/2007 10:14

my dd has this too - i'm in two minds as to whether to take her to the doctor, as it does seem to be affecting her chest, and she always gets a 'viral wheeze' ok asthma, when she has a cough and a flu/cold type thing. i don't want to go down the antibiotics/ steroids route for the second time in a month, but if it's what she needs....

munchkinmum · 29/11/2007 10:57

Hi

Have caught the same thing from my dd who (still has) nasty cough from last week but dr confirmed chest clear. She is still coughing now but well otherwise.

I have had to take a day off sick today, feel lousy. Cough, losing voice and knackered (and 19 wks pg)!

Take care everyone.

DelGirl · 29/11/2007 11:00

dd has been really ill with it since last week. Seems to be over the worst now thank goodness but temp is still up a bit. You have my sympathy it has been an awful week, she's been so ill

mamazon · 29/11/2007 11:02

yeah DD has it and i think Ds is just coming down with it too.

she had the sickness bg last week and its turned into this horrid cough now.
it sounds so painfull, like she is tearing her lungs with each cough.

TheDullWitch · 29/11/2007 11:08

My 11 yr old ds had it for three weeks, hacking away all night long, no syrups or coughsweets worked at all. Eventually it eased and just played up when he was doing sport at school, the cold air probably. Now, he s almost better, but it sure does hang around this bug.

I got it too. It was AWFUL. Fine in the day, but the second I lay down in bed, I coughed and coughed, did not get a wink of sleep for 6 days. Exhausted, but tried to lie down... cough cough. Ended up trying to sleep upright like the ELephant Man.

Started taking homeopathic Pulsatilla, (and I don t go a bundle on these cures, but nothing else was shifting it) and a few days later was better. It could have been improving anyway. But still a bit tight and wheezy and I have no history of chesty things at all.

Niecie · 29/11/2007 11:12

DS1 had it about 2 weeks ago but it cleared up in about 5 days. However a friend whose DD has a bad cough was told by the doctor that the cough may last up to 4 weeks.

Probably too many viruses around to know which is which though.

DS2 currently has a cold, cough and temperature but is getting better after 5 days.

amazonianwoman · 29/11/2007 11:29

Yes, DD 3.5yrs & DS 8.5mths both have had it for 2wks now, although temps only lasted a couple of days.

DS has been the worst, coughing all night - and now he's just got another flipping vomiting bug so up all night again

I hate this time of year

turquoise · 01/12/2007 14:59

Oh buggery bollocks.

Dd has had this all week, I have had to take loads of time off work, she's no better (in fact worse!) and the doctor just says olbas oil and steam baths. Can't face weeks of it, she's absolutely miserable poor little thing.

And now i've got it.

LyraSilvertongue · 01/12/2007 15:01

Both of mine have it. DS2 (3) had a high temp all last week. Lots of the children in his nursery class have got it too.
DS1 has been mostly ok in the day but coughing a lot at night.

yogimum · 01/12/2007 15:26

DS 17 months has an awful cold at the moment. Coughing is worse at night and he has been in bed with me for the last few nights. This is the first time he's been ill in ages but I guess its that time of the year.

papaya · 01/12/2007 15:53

my DD has it, absolutely terrible at nighttime, last sunday was the worst and nothing was working, even sitting up with her in bed she was constantly gagging as her coughing got so bad. I went doc mon and he said there are some nasty visus's going around that children are struggling to shake off. he sai DD sounded a bit wheezy and he presribed her 7 days antibiotics and a ventolin inhaler to use so help her chest and ease the coughing at night. The inhaler was a miracle, i only used it for 48 hrs though til the antibiotcis were given a chance, I have to say I was amazed my doc prescibed anything at all, but it definately helped. He also said give children small but frequent sips of diluted WARM squash, and that this will work just as well as cough mixture as its more the relief they proved as you drink them.

you have my sympathy xx

Habbibu · 01/12/2007 15:58

Oh - I was going to post this! Yes, we've all had it for a week - running temps but feeling freezing cold, cough, etc. Daughter (13 months) coping quite well, despite cutting at least 6 teeth all at the same time, but poor husband is asthmatic, and his cough is pretty painful.

turquoise · 01/12/2007 16:01

The sore throat is agony - really lacerating after coughing, and the cough keeps making me gag.

I've never seen dd so ill for so long.

minko · 01/12/2007 20:46

We're all suffering here too. The one thing that helps is a humidifier. I tried it myself last night and it was great. DD is just getting over her cough after about 2 weeks (she's had the humidifier on so much the wallpaper is starting to come away in her room!)

Oh and when you get to the sore throat agony, try gargling with aspirin.

lilymolly · 01/12/2007 20:53

dd had it for over a week, started with conjuncitivitis, cold, very high temp and cough. Then she had a reaction to penicillan, and had been very sick now for over a week.

I AM DEMENTED.........

she will not eat anything....not choc/biscuits/ice cream etc.

GP says its virus and just keep on with paracetamol/ibuprofen.

I hope she is better soon

MegBusset · 01/12/2007 21:01

If you get wheezing along with the coughing, and the ribs are being sucked in with each breath, plus more than 40 breaths a minute, then it might be bronchiolitis (DS has just recovered from this). Our local hospitals are apparently packed with babies with it. Worth getting oxygen sats checked out at A&E if that happens, LO needed to be on oxygen and nebulisers for three days.

lilymolly · 01/12/2007 21:04

my dds breathing is ok thank god

gingerninja · 01/12/2007 22:54

We've got this and have had for about 3 weeks. Thought she'd got over it but it's back with a vengence. DD has a very rattley crackly chest and a horrid cough. I had a persistent cough for a week, didn't get any sleep as I coughed for hours as soon as I laid down. I really hope it's nearly finished as we're all exhausted and fed up. I feel so sorry for DD has she seems to have been poorly and teething for weeks poor little love.

suzi2 · 01/12/2007 22:59

Sounds like what my DS (2.4) and DD (9 months) have at the moment. And I suspect I'm coming down with it as my asthma is kicking off. I had something similar last year that lasted for months when I was very pg with DD.

It's awful when you can't do anything for them. That said, DD has slept for a couple of hours by herself this evening (due to exhaustion I'm sure!) which is highly unusual, and not unappreciated.
