Does hay fever make you cough?

Hi my son always suffers with hay fever but this year it seems to be worse. He has a constant dry cough. Is this normal with hay fever?

Eleoura · 14/07/2021 22:44

Not for me. Has he had a covid test?

I get itchy, puffy, watery eyes. Feel irritated, itchy nose etc. Don't recall a cough with hayfever though.

Plump82 · 14/07/2021 22:46

For me this year, yes. My throat and ears are so tickly and coughing kind of scratches it.

Scarby9 · 14/07/2021 22:46

It can be.

Ramina · 14/07/2021 22:47

@Eleoura he has had a test and it’s negative. He’s had it a while. We just put it down to his hay fever.

It might be cough variant asthma? And asthma can be triggered by hay fever.

Silkiecats · 14/07/2021 22:48

Might be seasonal allergic asthma I get that come on with hayfever especially if he is struggling to breathe with it as well.

I'm getting a cough with hayfever this summer. Not covid, doing weekly tests. I've heard hayfever is worse this year as lockdown has decreased our immunity but no idea if that's true.

Ramina · 14/07/2021 22:53

Thank you everyone for replying. It seems to vary for folks. He had Covid last year too @RoxanneMonke so maybe It’s connected.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 14/07/2021 22:54

It can do, as a variation of post nasal drip.
Have you given antihistamine to dry him out? Nasal rinse helps too

Ramina · 14/07/2021 22:59

That makes sense @goteam there seems to be a lot of people suffering this year and worse symptoms too. Thank you @Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons I will definitely try a nasal rinse!

Could be seasonal asthma, my ds uses an inhaler in the summer. Best see the GP.

FunnyWonder · 14/07/2021 23:02

My eldest DS coughs with his hay fever. It was particularly bad a couple of weeks ago though and I took him for a Covid test, which was negative thankfully.

Ramina · 14/07/2021 23:10

@ I hadn’t heard of that before,. He doesn’t have shortness of breath or wheezing though, just a dry cough. @FunnyWonder it’s obviously much worse this year. Same here too. He had a test last week that was negative!

My asthma is awful during hay-fever season. See the doctor for an inhaler and teach him breathing techniques to control it.

chesterelly · 14/07/2021 23:24

My DS does get a dry cough with hayfever. Almost like he's coughing to clear his throat. He has been taken by ambulance to A&E before because his hayfever made his throat swell so much he was struggling to breathe. He now has a steroid to take when this recurs. The first sign is the coughing.

lovescaca · 14/07/2021 23:25

Yeah I do and get very breathless, last week was awful!

userxx · 14/07/2021 23:29

Yep, horrible cough and sore throat. Hayfever is really bad this year.

justasking111 · 14/07/2021 23:42

I bought Telfast for OH this year his hayfever asthma is so bad. He forgot to take it today and was wheezing badly. I walked the dogs through a bracken area yesterday and was coughing, of course inhaler was back in the car. Get son checked over is my advice. Hayfever so bad this year

emmathedilemma · 15/07/2021 12:07

I also find my asthma is triggered by hayfever and allergies so it's probably related. It's not great during a covid pandemic and mine seems to be worse this year than it's been for years!

idontlikealdi · 15/07/2021 12:08

It is for me, particularly morning and night

lubeybooby · 15/07/2021 12:15

if its been more than 3 weeks he may need a course of steroids or other further attention to recover - go to gp

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 15/07/2021 12:18

Yes I did this year and was given an inhaler and told its seasonal asthma
Whatever pollen I'm allergic to has died down now and all symptoms have disappeared

justasking111 · 15/07/2021 12:29

Wearing masks for any length of time three hours in the hospital had me coughing for a few days. Awful side effect

Yep, I'm the same.
