Haven't pooped since surgery, any tips?

Had surgery on Thursday (gynae) and haven’t been able to poop since, I think it’s mainly because it feels like I’m going to poop out my ovaries and I’m quite swollen from surgery. I don’t really want to take laxatives unless I really have too. Any tips on what I can eat/drink to get things moving?

Honestly OP you should just take a laxative. That is what they are for

Tuckedinbelly · 23/05/2021 09:32

Laxative. Sounds like you 'really need to'.

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 23/05/2021 09:48

What about a suppository

TheFoz · 23/05/2021 09:48

Peppermint oil in hot water is excellent. Drink plenty of water, eat dates, grapes, brown bread. Are you still in hospital or are you home? Being at home made all the difference to me, I’m not a public pooper!

MsMMarple · 23/05/2021 09:49

Peppermint tea helped me.

Lovemusic33 · 23/05/2021 09:52

I will try peppermint tea before laxative, only reason I don’t want to take them is because even a small dose seems to make me ill for several days, would rather go down the nautical route but obviously if it continues I will try them.

I am at home and have the house to myself today so I’m hoping I can go 😬.

There are different kinds of laxatives? Are you strong enough to walk around? I find going to a bookshop or a library always makes me want to poo...

Fitforforty · 23/05/2021 09:54

You don’t want laxatives you need stool softener and suppository. A nice warm bath and a hot drink. Raise your feet high on a stool when you are on the toilet.

Choconuttolata · 23/05/2021 09:58

When you sit put your feet up on a stool

paintedpanda · 23/05/2021 10:06

Try lactulose for a bit, it's just a softener and works quite gently. It's not going to make you explode on the toilet

emmathedilemma · 23/05/2021 10:07

Have you been taking painkillers? I think that’s what made me constipated after surgery (that and having had nothing to eat except for 2 slices of white toast for over 24hrs!). I tried all the usual stuff that would make me go - milky coffee, fruit etc and nothing worked apart from one dose of laxatives.

stressbandit · 23/05/2021 10:13

Tangerines and satsumas and coffee are what set me off.

Lovemusic33 · 23/05/2021 10:28

I have been taking a lot of pain killers (not as many now), I can walk around but live in the middle of nowhere so can’t pop to a shop, I have been walking around the garden. I will go to the chemist tomorrow if things haven’t moved.

Sat drinking peppermint tea and hoping it helps.

Eating mainly toast hasn’t helped 😬, hopefully I can drive in a couple days and go and get some fibre.

Going to the chemist today, nothings moving and I’m feeling quite unwell.

@Lovemusic33 how did you get on today?

Lovemusic33 · 24/05/2021 20:59

Im ok. Took a laxative this morning, didn't think it had worked and then this evening...... 😬😬😬

Feeling much better, ibthink being full was pressing against the surgery area so I now feel less pained and less bloated. Have bought myself some Albran to keep things moving.

I was constipated after my recent surgery. Dates and senokot helped.

Lnix · 24/05/2021 21:07

I found dried apricots really good for getting things moving after a c section. Hope you feel better.

Sexnotgender · 24/05/2021 21:09

All bran, fresh OJ with bits and plenty of water.

2gd2btrue · 24/05/2021 21:12

Op do you mind me asking what laxative you took? I'm suffering similar and suppositories haven't worked Sad

caringcarer · 24/05/2021 22:27

Fresh juice. 2 or 3 drinks of it and grapes too. Put a pad over your vagina to support yourself. Make it soft so you don't have to push. Rhubarb is also good as raisins.

caringcarer · 24/05/2021 22:28

Painkillers often make s person feel.condtipated do you will need to keep things moving whilst you take them.

I took Dulcolax, only took one (do not take 2), make sure you stay home because it happens pretty suddenly, I had awful pain before I went.
