Haven't pooped since surgery, any tips?

Had surgery on Thursday (gynae) and haven’t been able to poop since, I think it’s mainly because it feels like I’m going to poop out my ovaries and I’m quite swollen from surgery. I don’t really want to take laxatives unless I really have too. Any tips on what I can eat/drink to get things moving?

I am same, really struggling to go. They gave me some liquid lactulose which has helped a little and prop my feet up on a stool
Mine was on 21st and I think it’s going to take a while!

It’s horrible isn’t it? Just adds to the uncomfortable from the surgery. I’m still not back to normal, the laxative worked for one day and now I’m back to being bunged up, I am trying to up my fibre intake and ate half a pineapple last night 😬.

It is TMI but I struggle to wipe as they cut my abdomen open so I do not want to invite any diarrhoea into the party!
I just go sit on the toilet for 20 mins every couple of hours and try to let gravity take hold. The physio advised me to do that

Happy pooping soon for us both!

Dulcolax is the only thing that worked for me, I have taken two and not pebbledashed the bathroom !

Lovemusic did you mean the "nautical "route. I have visions of you dancing the hornpipe to try and get things moving Grin

Lovemusic33 · 26/05/2021 15:21

🤣🤣 ‘natural route’.

Menora I wouldn’t recommend taking a laxative unless you really have too, I was desperate as I felt my full bowel was putting pressure on the where I had surgery (ovaries and uterus). The pain when they kicked it was pretty horrible. I think it’s best just to keep sitting in the loo and walking around to get things moving, also drink plenty, I find mint tea helps.

Agree. I no longer have a uterus 😂 but it feels like someone is trying to squeeze my ghost uterus out so I think this is also a full up bowel and I am sick of it!

I just ordered another pair of surgical stockings - £15! Along with my giant wound and constipation this is not turning out to be a good week 😂

Died prunes

I had a hysterectomy yesterday. I’m taking dulcoease because I know the pain will be much worse if I get constipated. It’s bad enough as it is Sad

If you want to keep things moving take Fybogel, or similar soluble fibre, like ispaghula husk. Fybogel comes in a sachet, you dissolve it in water and drink it, twice a day. Much gentler than laxative. (I can't cope with high fibre cereals like allbran ). After surgery I still need laxatives to get things going, then start up the Fybogel.
