Where’s my taste gone??

Rudolph98 · 24/12/2020 11:36

Hi all, I can smell fine but my taste has been off for a week. I had a very very minor cold last week then got a bad throat. By Friday I couldn’t taste so I got a covid test - negative.

I can only assume a mix of the cold and sore throat has messed with my taste buds big time. Also had really bad acid reflux this week (it’s Christmas after all) which probably hasn’t helped! I also have problems with my Salivary glands. All of this probably hasn’t helped. Plus I have wisdom teeth that affect my sinuses quite often. I sound like a picture of health here! 😫

I can taste but it’s very bland. Cant really taste whilst chewing but get the full flavour when swallowed. I’ve lost my sense of taste with a cold before but never for this long.

I feel fine in myself and I can smell. Very bizarre as taste is heavily impacted by smell but I can smell everything fine if anything my sense of smell is heightened. Oh burnt toast and it got right yo my
Nose from upstairs!

Ideas on how I can improve my palate by tomorrow please? 🤣🤣

Is there a reason why you dont suspect covid?

RunningFromInsanity · 24/12/2020 11:42

Get a bloody test. You have lost your sense of taste one of the most common symptoms of the biggest virus in the world right now.

Ostryga · 24/12/2020 11:42

Because she tested negative? Hmm

SoupDragon · 24/12/2020 11:43

She's had a test.

DottyWott · 24/12/2020 11:43

I’d do another test

Instead of being rude, read the OP Hmm
bellagogosdead · 24/12/2020 11:45

Agh sorry I missed the bit about you having a negative test.

Rudolph98 · 24/12/2020 11:45

I’ve had a taste people!

Undies1990 · 24/12/2020 11:46

Why do people not read what the OP has written?

THEY HAD A NEGATIVE TEST

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 24/12/2020 11:47

Plan A - get another test. The first one might be wrong / too early
Plan B - act like its covid anyway

Other colds do affect your sense of taste, so it might not be. But right now, the balance of probability is that it is.

MarcelineMissouri · 24/12/2020 11:48

I think sinuses can quite often impact taste can’t they?? I often have quite blocked sinuses and things taste weird for a while. Maybe try one of those sprays that cleans them out and see if that helps at all?

And read the bloody opening post properly people, it’s not like it was information hidden in a long thread!!

Rudolph98 · 24/12/2020 11:52

I do have major sinus issues @MarcelineMissouri I’ve suffered with lack of taste many many times in the past. But this is just annoying be so close to Christmas! I was tested Saturday with the same symptoms I had now and haven’t been out much since just because there’s been nothing to do and everything has been delivered. Maybe I will get re-tested! But I feel fine, I can smell! Very bizarre. My throat has been pretty sore since last Thursday. I did read that strep throat can affect taste buds! 🤷‍♀️

I have had a taste people!

Ha, no you haven't!

lljkk · 24/12/2020 11:54

Temporary Loss of taste is a common symptom with the common cold. Don't think you can rush it back, OP. Blame 2020 for bad timing.

Rudolph98 · 24/12/2020 11:55

@CrumbsThatsQuick really?! I’d quite happily share my test result if it didn’t give away my name on here!

My son was also tested last week due to a cold and cough which was also negative. Dd has also had a stinking cold! Oh had a mild sore throat.

sandybayley · 24/12/2020 11:57

I had a negative test and symptoms got my worse. Got a second test and was positive. It's possible you tested too early to pick it up. I'd test again.

nineyearsapart · 24/12/2020 11:58

Crumbs was joking because you had a typo saying you had a taste.

Camphillgirl · 24/12/2020 11:58

Try using mouthwash for some reason it helps my sinusitis. Everybody gets coughs colds and sore throats in winter. This year we automatically suspect Covid

Rudolph98 · 24/12/2020 11:59

Sorry I completely mis-read your comment @CrumbsThatsQuick. my apologises 🌸

She's had a 'bloody test' so don't be so 'bloody rude'.

I think
@CrumbsThatsQuick
was making a joke - you said you'd had a taste, not test, in your post. X

Would agree with PP that it might be worth another test. My mum had symptoms on the Thursday, tested negative on Friday. Still ill so retested on Sunday and was positive. Worth double checking. X

Isadora2007 · 24/12/2020 12:01

Perhaps have another test. But I don’t think there is anything to do about it sadly. I had covid in October and my taste still isn’t really back. Gutted. Doesn’t stop me eating sadly as I just try other things to get some kind of satisfaction.

Rudolph98 · 24/12/2020 12:01

@sandybayley hope you’re feeling better now! I haven’t got worse just hasn’t improved! I can taste. Haven’t felt ill. If I was blind folded and has food shoved in my mouth I would know what it is. Just it’s a bit bland. It seems to come and go. Mornings I can taste fine by the afternoons not so much. It’s been a bizarre week!
