Where’s my taste gone??

Hi all, I can smell fine but my taste has been off for a week. I had a very very minor cold last week then got a bad throat. By Friday I couldn’t taste so I got a covid test - negative.

I can only assume a mix of the cold and sore throat has messed with my taste buds big time. Also had really bad acid reflux this week (it’s Christmas after all) which probably hasn’t helped! I also have problems with my Salivary glands. All of this probably hasn’t helped. Plus I have wisdom teeth that affect my sinuses quite often. I sound like a picture of health here! 😫

I can taste but it’s very bland. Cant really taste whilst chewing but get the full flavour when swallowed. I’ve lost my sense of taste with a cold before but never for this long.

I feel fine in myself and I can smell. Very bizarre as taste is heavily impacted by smell but I can smell everything fine if anything my sense of smell is heightened. Oh burnt toast and it got right yo my
Nose from upstairs!

Ideas on how I can improve my palate by tomorrow please? 🤣🤣

@LadyShrek2k19 I’ve realised that and feel like an idiot, sorry 🤣

@Rudolph98 - I'm fine now, thanks for asking. The weird thing was my taste and smell went as I started to feel better (temp down, headache went and cough subsided). But I did lose taste for a miserable 12 days. Back now in time for Christmas lunch 😊

Rudolph98 · 24/12/2020 12:09

@sandybayley glad you are feeling better! I don’t think any of us have actually had it here (there was one time I thought my children could have back when no testing at all. They were very poorly but no idea.. Unless I have it very mildly now of course and got a false negative.

Glad you’ll be able to taste your Christmas lunch.

As well as food being bland. Food has tasted a little different. We had sweet and sour chicken a couple nights ago. All I got was the sour vinegar taste nothing else. Yet I had cheese this morning and tasted it perfectly. My tonsils are swollen so I’m hoping it’s just impacted my taste!

As a point of interest, my boss was symptomatic- cough cough cough. Got a test, negative. Ended up testing the following weekend, positive. Ten members of staff infected.....

I am one of them, covid positive thankfully on the mend. Can smell and taste fine

I had a period of time last year where my smell and taste went to shit, dr said probably post viral so its not just covid.

CorianderQueen · 24/12/2020 12:24

This is common. Your sinuses are connected so a cold can effect taste.

I always know when I'm getting something as my spit tastes weird.

Rudolph98 · 24/12/2020 12:36

@TheoriginalLEM that sucks! I’ve heard so much about false negatives and testing too early. I haven’t really been out anywhere since my test just because I’ve been in getting ready for Christmas so even if it was false I haven’t spread it around. Meant to be seeing family tomorrow but maybe it’s a good excuse not to go 😉 I have a difficult relationship with family!

DS also had a negative result last week so
I’m hoping we just had the same. Dd has also been extremely snotty as oh had a very mild sore throat. Sure we all had the same just in slightly different forms and symptoms but who knows!

Well guys I’m still being cautious as you never know but I’ve been using corsydol (not sure on spelling sorry) mouth wash all week as my impacted wisdom tooth is a little swollen and the bad throat (often they go hand in hand). Anyway I’ve just read the side effects to the mouthwash and one is taste disturbances. Obviously I don’t know for sure but who knows. Would explain why my taste senses come and go at the minute AND I can smell! I’m hoping it’s that anyway! One minute I can taste well and then it’s dull!

About 18 months ago I lost my sense of smell and taste and the GP tried a variety of nose drops etc. It seems to have been related to inflamed nose/sinus and was eventually improved by a combination of citirizine anti histamine and Betamethasone drops which I think is a steroid. It took about 6 onths to come back and sometimes goes again for a while. Not covid, just unfortunately the same symptom.
