Feeling of something stuck in my throat

BellaLasagne · 17/10/2007 15:09

I feel as though there's a hair or tiny bit of food stuck at the back of my tongue and it won't go away.

I can eat and drink OK and it doesn't hurt, I haven't got a sore throat. I don't have a cold at all.

It feels really odd and I can't see anything, I've had this for a few days now. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks, BL

You've probably scratched your throat eating bread or something. It will go away on it's own. Either that or you may have mild strep throat in which case expect to have a deep husky voice and a bad temper within the day

tatt · 17/10/2007 15:12

would have said it was an allergic reaction but that would have gone by now unless you were constantly eating the same allergen. You could try antihistamine anyway but I think most probably something has scraped your throat and there's a tiny sore spot that will improve with time.

Get one of those vicious mouth washes - the ones that taste of meths - and gargle for afew days?

BellaLasagne · 17/10/2007 15:26

Thanks - it feels like a spot of dried skin (yeurgh!) or very small lump. I have to keep swallowing as I feel the need to swallow it down.

It probably is just a scratch but another possibility is you might have a small "tonsil stone" which will come out in a few days time. They feel unpleasant!

starshaker · 17/10/2007 15:35

does it make u gag. i have the same and no idea what it is but ive had this feeling for about 3 months

BellaLasagne · 17/10/2007 18:30

No, it doesn't make me gag, only if I stick my finger down there to try to get it out! Obviously not a good idea!

Toaster, what's a 'tonsil stone'? I've never heard of that before.

Hi Loopy, I did add to your previous post from Monday but it wasn't getting answered and fell off the active convos. Hopefully this one will attract some more help.

Thanks to all who've answered so far

Bella and Loopy, if you have a tendency to be anxious or stressed, it might be globus pharyngeus. Can't do links but basically it's quite common and you need to chill

flamingtoaster · 18/10/2007 10:03

BellaLasagne - tonsil stones are quite common. I have them occasionally and both DS and DD have had them. They are thought to start when a small amount of food gets stuck in a tonsil crevice - the body immune system attacks it and it grows. Basically you do feel like there is something caught in your throat for a few days before they either come out themselves or are encouraged out (sometimes they are dislodged by a cough or sneeze, or if you gargle or press on the area with the back of your tongue if it's in a suitable position). There's a better explanation here:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonsilloliths

If you google you'll even find pictures but they are really gross and not for the faint hearted!

loopylou6 · 18/10/2007 21:57

hows ya throat bella?

BellaLasagne · 19/10/2007 16:26

Sorry for the delay - been at work.

It was a lot worse yesterday, throat like sandpaper but not sore. Weird. Kept feeling like I was about to get yukky strep throat.

A bit better today - it seems to have moved from one side to the back of my throat. I guess if it's moving it must be viral not physical?

How's yours Loopy?

You have to have that diagnosis first....I don't know if you have a hair, another foreign body, or just inflammation in your throat. Inflammation can send "false signals" to your brain giving you the impression there is an object, or a hair, but in reality, there is not. Again, I neither one of us know what you are dealing with....Offering you suggestions to dislodge a hair when a hair isn't there, is not the way to go. Besides, you have tried these things.

Try soothing your throat with some honey....or glycerine based cough lozenges. If it wasn't irritated and inflammed before you started poking your finger in there, it may be now. Ibuprofen onlinepharmacyreviews.org/ingredients/ibuprofen can help inflammation, but neither of these two things is going to likely dislodge an irritated foreign body. Start making some contingency plans to get medical care, like finding a free clinic or a place to seek care.

gingeroots · 08/03/2015 19:38

Please go to GP and get this checked .Don't ignore it ,I'm sure GP will help .

FoodieToo · 08/03/2015 21:57

Has this for about two weeks. Went to GP who could bit see anything and said it was a scratch.
Eventually a bristle from my toothbrush came up !! The relief.

I would also suggest a tonsil stone.

321zerobaby · 08/03/2015 22:06

Do you have any thyroid problems? Feeling like you have a lump in your throat can sometimes be a symptom.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 09/03/2015 14:55

Can you see anything when you shine a torch down there? Sounds like a tonsil stone - google if you've got the stomach for it. They're also a bit whiffy. I used to get them occasionally and could "pop" them out

DayLillie · 09/03/2015 15:00

I get something like this from oral allergy syndrome. Especially if I eat hazel nuts.

It is usually on tonsils. Sometimes it goes away within a day, sometimes I get white lumps or bubbles on my tonsils.

I usually use ibuprofen and antihistamines.

aliciasanders12 · 09/03/2015 16:24

gp has said she can't see anything there so i still have no idea what it is this be the third week i had it now. :( i dunno if it is a build up off flem but i'm starting to think so now. thanks for your advised.

DayLillie · 10/03/2015 12:52

I have had a very fine fish bone stuck in the back of my tongue, like a hair. It drove me up the wall for several days and was invisible. It came out eventually. I must have pulled it or something, otherwise I wouldn't have known what it was Hmm

Sarahlouise1981 · 26/10/2015 23:28
