Awful diarrhoea after making lentil dahl

RC000 · 12/11/2020 13:48

Hello, does anyone have advice or has experienced similar please?

Made a lentil dahl with sweet potato and spinach last night. AWFUL stomach ache and diarrhoea tofay. It's like brown water (sorry) I did eat a massive portion, didn't wash the lentils and after googling, maybe I didn't cook for long enough?

How long will this last? It's awful!

I think you have just overdone the fibre. If the lentils were soft, they were cooked. If they were brown lentils, you should wash them but not split read ones.

Remedy- grate an eating apple skin and all. Leave it till the juices run. Then eat and drink all of it. It's not an old wives' tale- it works as the pectin in the apple helps control the spasms and the liquid poo.

Thank you - they were the split red ones and were soft. I will try the apple!

Don't jump to the dahl. Could just be a bug. You only rinse the lentils to remove dust and stuff, not the end of the world if you don't.

emmathedilemma · 12/11/2020 15:46

I can't eat dahl or anything with any significant quantity of lentils in, they do terrible things to my bowels!!

RC000 · 12/11/2020 15:46

When will it stop?!

Yep. I made a mild vegetable and lentil curry earlier in the week and was sick/upset tummy all night.
I was fine the next morning.

RC000 · 12/11/2020 17:13

Thank you. Really hoping it's better tomorroe

Lentils do awful things to my intestines. I really like them too :(

Crappyfridays7 · 12/11/2020 19:59

I had red lentil soup out a while back and had similar issues was not pleasant hopefully it clears up soon

JamaicanJamboree · 12/11/2020 20:05

I have been keen to try lentils as I thought they might make me feel like I’m attempting to be healthy but maybe not now!

Sorry OP, I do hope you feel much better soon. Try and keep hydrated.

RC000 · 12/11/2020 20:52

Thank you! Still got it... really hoping better tomorrow

You haven't been on the 'orlistat' have you? Wink (see related thread)

CharityPecksniff · 12/11/2020 21:24

I can't eat lentils for the same reason.

gungholierthanthou · 12/11/2020 21:45

Aren't lentils something some people can be really intolerant to? I'm sure I've seen posts about it before.

RC000 · 14/11/2020 07:05

Urgh. Thought I was better yesterday but have been up since 2am with diarrhoea. Is this normal? The lentils or a bug? How long does diarrhoea usually last? I am so fed up.

OP posts:
indeedoody · 14/11/2020 07:19

I think it's a bug.
I posted yesterday to say I'd had diarrhoea every 30 minutes since 6am.
I was even up 4 times in the night last night.
Can't even keep water in.

LondonlovesLola · 14/11/2020 07:20

Have you got Loperamide ?
Supermarket own brands are much cheaper than brands like Imodium.
They will really help OP.

RC000 · 14/11/2020 08:07

Yes have just made a boots on rehydratjon tablet.

@indeedoody are you vomiting too? Mine is just diarrhoea. I am in SE.

OP posts:
indeedoody · 14/11/2020 08:29

Nope not vomiting. But can't even drink water without it coming out the other end.
Never had diarrhoea like it.

RC000 · 14/11/2020 08:43

@indeedoody sounds like me. So horrible. I feel so weak. Hopefully won't last longer than another day.

That's got to be a bug. I had something similar a couple of years ago - took 60 ish hours and was grim but did just go on its own.

I drank an insane amount of water but was away with work in Germany so didn't manage to get any OTC medication. I think you should try the chemist OP.

RC000 · 14/11/2020 11:07

Thank you, I hope so!

grassisjeweled · 15/11/2020 01:51

Sounds like a bug.

Can you try the BRAN diet? Bread, rice something something? Super bland food

grassisjeweled · 15/11/2020 01:51

BRAT diet

Banana, rice, apple sauce, toast

ScottishsmallPiper · 15/02/2025 18:23

I made dahl and have loose stool. I have never reacted to lentils before. Red lentils and I think that it was the green cayenne chillies that caused it. I don't think that I cooked them enough. I'm fine with restaurant bought dahl. I'm just posting and all the best to everyone who suffered digestive upsets from eating lentils.
