Hi my baby is 12 days old I've had a bad head on and off since Friday but really got worse Monday night. I've had migraines before but this one just won't go away I've been in tears all day. I've seen the doctor yesterday they checked me over BP etc and said it's hormonal but it's so bad it's on one side and just pounds I can't do much in living on painkillers which take the edge off so I can do basic stuff but other then that it's still there all the time the tablets just take the edge off.
It feels like the migraine I get before a period but worse and surely I can't keep taking tablets I'm getting so worried I'm going to have a stroke because I've never had it like this before.
Can anyone relate ? I didn't have one migraine in my pregnancy so it's come as a shock to my system and has hit me like a ton of bricks even my eyes look puffy and keep watering. I'm so miserable with this :-(

Did you have a spinal block during delivery? My friend had one and it caused a spinal migraine. Might be worth checking out...?

maria860 · 08/10/2020 16:47

No I wish I did as it would explain this I have never had a migraine this long or painful in my life.

Aw I'm so sorry- I thought I'd cracked it for you there. Have you spoken to a health visitor as opposed to a doctor?

Holliej · 08/10/2020 16:53

I had the worst aura migraines for a good month after my DS was born. I thought I was going blind and rang the GP in a panic. He reassured me it was due to recovering from birth, lack of sleep, not looking after myself and breastfeeding. I did find BF made them worse but once I managed to get some proper sleep and got into a bit more of a routine they went away. My DS is now six months and not had once since he was week 4 or 5. Try drinking lots of water, eating regularly but small bits and tiger balm in temples helped (I swear by the stuff tho). Hope you feel better soon OP and congratulations on your baby. If you are worried though, keep pushing the doctors xx

DonLewis · 08/10/2020 16:57

This is well random, but worth a shot?

I'm suffering from the worst migraines with airs I've ever had atm. I think it's a new job and zoom/laptop work. Nothi g is working except sleep /lying in a dark room which you obviously can't t do right now. And, actually, nor can I.

So I've bought a shakti mat and pillow. I couldn't afford a proper shakti one, so I've bought a cheaper one one amazon with the same amount of spikes. The reviews are phenomenal. Waiting for mine to arrive, so I can't say it's worked, but I'm so hopeful.

Failing that, I was considering reflexology and acupuncture.

Pink migralieve and a red coke helps me too. Something in the red coke makes the blood vessels contract (I think that's the vague 'science' behind it anyhow).

Congratulations, and sympathies too.

I’d go to hospital to get it checked out. I had a small BP spike 5 days post partum with DC2 and the midwife who visited that day told me to go back in to be checked if my head started to ache with no relief from painkillers. It did exactly that 2 days later. I had post partum pre eclampsia. Almost collapsed on arrival at the hospital but they were amazing. BP sky high! Managed to pump me full of meds before worse symptoms could start. Please get checked. What I had is rare but I’m proof that it can happen. Wishing you all the best. 🌹

frogsareflyinginfromthewest · 08/10/2020 17:03

Does it get better/stop pounding when lying down? I had the most awful migraine for days after I gave birth, proper thumping!

It was caused by extremely low haemoglobin levels. May be a good idea to have a blood test?

Onekidnoclue · 08/10/2020 17:04

Please go to the hospital or speak to a decent midwife ASAP. Migraines post partum can be a sign of HELLP or preeclampsia.

maria860 · 08/10/2020 17:57

I did get my blood pressure checked yesterday it was 100/70 so low it's always low. I might ring 111 and see what they say to do because it's on one side in the back of my head And moves to the front and does not let up at all and I've never experienced this before. Ibuprofen gives me real bad tinnitus but I have to take it I've lived on painkillers since Monday night now and I feel like nobody gives two shits or is helping me in any way at all. I'm scared I'm going to have a stroke or go bed and not wake up

maria860 · 08/10/2020 18:02

No one has checked my blood count since 28 weeks

Froglette16 · 08/10/2020 18:54

Go to the hospital. Please. Get it checked. Nothing will help if it’s a BP problem missed. X

Froglette16 · 08/10/2020 18:57

Also, BP can rise suddenly. Unless you have a machine at home you might not realise how bad it is. In a post partum situation it’s best to get checked out at a hospital. Please, please go. Just to be absolutely certain. ❤️

Froglette16 · 08/10/2020 19:14

Until you’re checked out don’t take ibuprofen. Only paracetamol. Ibuprofen can cause more BP issues.

maria860 · 08/10/2020 20:48

Just to update I went to a clinic by my house that does walk in and a nurse checked my BP and it's still low so I don't think it's that u asked her about the condition postpartum eclampsia and she said it's very rare and I don't have it.
My GP finally rang me at 7 and has squeezed me in for tomorrow morning appointments are like winning the lottery at the moment where I am so he said he will check me over throughly in the morning. Other then that I don't know what else I can do now I'm going to ask for a blood test while I am there too.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my thread I have never felt so miserable I feel like since I had my daughter I haven't had a break the blood loss made me collapse on my first day home and I literally couldn't walk from one end of the room to the other without help from my partner couldn't even walk up the stairs was to weak.
That took me three days to get my strength back then the milk came in which gave me Awful pain and engorgement and a high temp and I kept having gushes of blood which I had to ring the midwives to come and check me over that my womb was contracting back.
I had probably one good day of feeling ok and functioning before the migraine started I actually told my mom today I feel like I just don't want to live at the moment because I feel so unwell.
I was really ill after my last son too and took six weeks to recover and I had normal births don't know why I'm like this after childbirth. I am never having more babies now I'm put off for life.

Please call your midwife and health visitor and tell them exactly what you've posted here.
Your doctor is being really dismissive (as they often are with post-partum women).

Froglette16 · 08/10/2020 22:18

Have they checked your urine for protein? Just keep asking for more help. Post partum eclampsia is rare but your bp can shoot up at any point. If your head feels like it’s full of pressure you need to go. It’s a different kind of headache. Not migraine but like your head is full of something and it needs to be released. It doesn’t hurt exactly but it’s always there.

Ginfordinner · 08/10/2020 22:22

If you are breastfeeding could you be dehyrated?

Froglette16 · 08/10/2020 22:29

If it is post partum pre eclampsia you need to get it sorted ASAP. I didn’t want to worry you before now but you could have seizures. Please please go to the hospital. Your gp isn’t dealing with this quickly enough. Hopefully you’re ok. But your symptoms make me worry.

DonLewis · 10/10/2020 08:45

@maria860 how are you today?

DonLewis · 11/10/2020 09:58

@maria860 hope you're feeling better.

maria860 · 11/10/2020 13:36

Hi guys I did update this and it hasn't posted. I went back to GP Friday he can't find anything wrong with me. Headache still there but has stopped throbbing I now just get shooting pains constantly and a dull ache in same place. Feel like I'm stuck with this pain day in day out wake up with it go to bed with it it's been a week. I've got the midwife Tuesday will ask them to check me again. It's the shooting pains now that are concerning me same place and literally every five minutes I haven't taken painkillers today or yesterday which is a result but they don't really help the shooting head pains anyway. It is worrying and I feel like the doc palmed me off and said it will get better soon :-(

I've also had two migraine auras since I posted just never ending at mo for me I guess my hormones are screened

DonLewis · 11/10/2020 14:50

Ah, that sounds tough. Have you tried a red coke? I know it sounds so stupid. But it does tend to help me. Hope you're on the mend soon.
