Help with possible tonsil cyst or stone

Tb1401 · 08/10/2020 13:23

Hi

I posted this the other day but not had any response so reposting in the hope someone can help.

I have this yellow spot on my tonsil along with another on opposite side. GP has referred me to ENT but I have now developed pain behind my ear which radiates down my neck. I'm not sure if the pain is from the tonsil as I also suffer from sinus problems, ringing in my ears and post nasal drip. I haven't had my ears checked as yet but the pain is getting unbearable. I've tried to dislodge the spot but it is under the skin rather than on the surface. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Looks like a tonsil stone to me. Did doctor not think so?

FinallyFluid · 08/10/2020 14:30

Go back to your doctor immediately and tell them, don't ask them, TELL them you want an immediate referral to an ENT consultant.

Tb1401 · 08/10/2020 14:32

Thanks, I have an appointment with ENT on the 19th. The GP said she did t think it looked concerning but ENT would have a better look with the camera

Back to the doctors. Could be an infection?

FinallyFluid · 08/10/2020 14:35

Okay good re ENT

Tb1401 · 08/10/2020 14:37

I was given Penicillin but the spots are still there so can't be an infection. I've read you can get mucus retention cysts on your tonsils and was hoping someone on here had any experience with them

That looks more like quinsy- you need to speak to your GP ASAP as it’s exceptionally painful.

It looks a bit too covered over to be a stone.

perfumeistooexpensive · 08/10/2020 14:41

I had these and they were pus. I had my tonsils out as an emergency. Not all antibiotics work. You may have been given the wrong one or too low a dose. Mine were beyond anything working.

Tb1401 · 08/10/2020 14:44

Thanks everyone. My throat doesn't really hurt but the back of my ear and neck is really sore and paracetamol and brufen isnt helping. I'm getting really fed up now and my anxiety is at its worst

I get tonsil stones but often cant see them but can only describe it as having like popcorn caught at the back of my throat. Not painful at all just highly irritating. Have you tried picking that out?

Tb1401 · 08/10/2020 15:01

Hi I can't pick them out as they seem to be u set the skin rather than on the surface.

JustDavesWife · 08/10/2020 15:06

I get tonsil stones but that looks as if it's covered over by skin maybe? Tonsil stones can be poked out. I hope your ENT referral comes through quickly but if the pain gets any worse please go back to the GP or urgent care.

Tb1401 · 08/10/2020 15:14

Thank you. I've called the appointments office to get a cancellation of one comes up. Yes it seems to have skin covering it and I dont want to poke and prod in case I make it worse

@Tb1401 - I have exactly similar issues since February and have been recently discharged from ENT consult. I am posting so that you can get some idea what is going on. First, it is a tonsil cyst and not a stone so please do not try to dislodge it as it will hurt your tonsils. The ENT consultant has told me that the cyst in itself does not need treatment as it will go away on its own and the white pus you see inside is actually sterile mucous - it is not infected and therefore cannot harm. Your body will either absorb it back in a few months or it might burst on it own , neither is a problem. Your main issue is sinus infection which probably caused the cyst in the first place. If you have post nasal drip then that is the cause of your earache and not the cyst. Your doctor might order a CT scan for para sinuses to find out the reason for sinus infection and drip and see if you have any blocked fluid in your sinus. My consultant did all that and gave me a steroid spray which has helped a lot. Since I was stuck during covid time and my referral took a long time I tried a lot of things , one that helped me a lot was claritin once a day which helped me with post nasal drip and earache. I talked my consultant about it and she said it works really well in this situation and she advised me to take it regularly or as often as needed.
Also my continuous drip did cause a slight gum infection for which my dentist advised to use corsodyl. Not sure if you need it.
I still have a cyst , recently it has started reducing. So it has been there for 9 months. Once my symptoms of sinus was under control I realised that other than just being there the cyst does not actually cause any problems.
The ENT consultant might drain your cyst only if it is causing swallowing or breathing issues.

@Literallyfedup I can't thank you enough for all the info you have taken the time to share with me. I'm feel much more reassured with what you have said. OMG!! I ha e suffered sinusitis for the last 20+ years with constant nasal drip. When the pain above my eye and headaches start I usually treat myself with a netipot and copious amounts of painkillers. I actually have another one of these lesions on the back side of my other tonsils too. I do have earache but the pain at the back of my ear and neck has resolved slightly today as I think this is musculoskeletal with the way I've been sitting in my car. I haven't picked and prodded as I was never convinced it was a stone as they are under the surface. Hopefully I get my sinus issues sorted at ENT and as you say these cysts just absorb naturally in time. Thank you again for sharing with me and making me feel soooo much better mentally x

I’m the same!! I’m going to my dentist tomorrow afternoon so see what they think. I get tonsil stones and it is not a stone, it is not an ulcer, it just looks like a round spot? I’ve had mine since March

Tb1401 · 12/10/2020 15:21

@Kerrywerry can you let me know what your dentist says please? I don't have ENT until next wk. Does your spot look the same as mine? I have another hiding behind the other tonsil too and they are definitely not stones. I'm more inclined to say they are cysts

OP posts:
Kerrywerry · 12/10/2020 17:07

Hey, yes it does, I’m thinking it’s an lymphoepitheleal cyst (excuse the spelling) will let you know what they say tomorrow.

Tb1401 · 13/10/2020 09:36

@Kerrywerry good luck today and please keep me updated

Kerrywerry · 13/10/2020 15:46

So went to the dentist and he said it’s not dental because it’s my throat lol so I’ve to go back to the doctors again lol so I’ve emailed the DRs

Tb1401 · 13/10/2020 17:13

@Kerrywerry

Oh no, what a waste of time. I hope you don't wait long on a doctors appointment. I will let you know what they say to me on Monday

Tb1401 · 19/10/2020 10:29

Just to update this thread. I have now been seen by ENT and I have cysts. He said they are completely harmless and nearly everyone gets them but they probably don't notice. They will resolve on their own. I hope this post helps anyone who finds themselves in the same position and are worried what they might be 😊

Thanks! I got my ENT app through for Monday 26th which was so fast! I’m sure mine will be the same :)
