I have the most horrendous face pain

saltire · 05/10/2007 22:54

It is down the bone that goes along the side of my face, between my hairline and my jawbone, and right along my jaw to my mouth, and up over my ear.
It's agony, have taken my really strong painkillers but it's still tehre. Any suggestions?

Neuralgia (sp) maybe

FrannyandZombie · 05/10/2007 22:59

Oh dear, how horrid. Have you ever had it before?

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 05/10/2007 23:00

Ouch saltire - sounds very painful. What sort of painkillers have you taken?

I used to get something called trigeminal neuralgia. It's dreadful and is sort of around the area you describe but mine goes from my hairline at the temple across my cheekbone. If you think it might be this and it carries on there is something else you can get from your GP. Will Google as I can't remember the name.

oneplusone · 05/10/2007 23:01

Could be sinuses, they are all over your face (inside) and if they flare up can cause pain. Do you have a cold?

jangly · 05/10/2007 23:01

Does your jaw click when you open your mouth wide? Could it be this www.medicinenet.com/temporomandibular_joint__disorder/page2.htm?

hotcrossbunny · 05/10/2007 23:01

Sinusitis? Horrible pain if it is... Does it hurt more if you bend forwards? Have a really hot steamy shower if so. Helps to clear passages a bit.
Poor you

BitchPants · 05/10/2007 23:02

Poor sausage

BecauseImWereWolfit · 05/10/2007 23:03

What painkillers are you taking? A couple of suggestions:

a) alternate a paracetamol-based drug with one that is based on ibuprofen, which would mean that you can take something every 2 hours

b) try Syndol - it combines paracetamol and codein with an antihistamine, which acts as a muscle relaxant.

saltire · 05/10/2007 23:04

It doesn't hurt if I lean forward, it hurts all teh time.

saggar, I have taken 2 co-codamol 30/500mg

saltire - is it not part of the whole PVFS thing? I am sure you have posted on my thread....apologies if I am wring. I have no memory right now

saltire · 05/10/2007 23:08

ooh, popsycal. I never thought of that. I don't have PVFS, I have Fibromyalgia, which is similar, has a lot of the same symptoms will go off and have a look. I've just never had this before and it is so bad, I hope its not something I'm going to have to put up with all the time

OP posts:
popsycal · 05/10/2007 23:12

Headaches and facial pain. Many people who have fibromyalgia also have headaches and facial pain that may be related to tenderness or stiffness in their neck and shoulders. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, which affects the jaw joints and surrounding muscles, also is common in people with fibromyalgia.

saltire · 05/10/2007 23:15

Now I don't get many headaches, at least not compared to some Fibro sufferers. I will go and have a look on the Fibro forum I go and see what they say. I can't pout up with this all the time, I'm almost crying with the pain.

How is oyur PVFS by the way, are you coping ok. If you get fed up, I'll chat to you about it, I'm sure Shosha will as well. It gets me really down sometimes

This is some info on trigeminal neuralgia - not sure how it ties in with fibromyalgia if at all.

I was prescribed Carbamazepine.

Maybe an anti-inflammatory would help? Hope you feel better soon.

popsycal · 06/10/2007 09:34

how are you today

saltire · 06/10/2007 09:51

Thanks popsy, It finally eased off about midnight, then I woke with it again about 3 and took some more painkillers. its not too bad just now

can i just bump this to find out the outcome of the OP (if shes still around) i am having this very same problem, it started before christmas but then disapeared by itself, but for a week it has been back in force, i am trying to decide if the pain could be caused by a tooth, i have the dentist in a week so he will check for cavities etc, but in the mean time im starting to get myself into quite a state imagining all the nastys it could be..

ggglmpp · 19/02/2008 14:30

it sounds like trigeminal neuralgia. I had this in my early twenties (v rare) and it is absolutely agonising. I thought I had been shot in the ear! I was on carbamazopine for over a year.

Touch every piece of wood going, has never come back.

ggglmpp · 19/02/2008 14:31

Snap saggers -

loopylou6 · 19/02/2008 14:32

i think its either my tooth or TN its only on one side and it is bloody painful, i havent slept in 3 nights as it keeps waking me up, but the site says it doesnt wake u up in the night? (i am 25 btw)

throckenholt · 19/02/2008 14:35

I had something similar once and it was an infected salivary gland - ouch .

loopylou6 · 19/02/2008 14:37

ooo that sounds nasty TH, i think im gonna see the dentist first and hopefully he will find i need a filling and that will solve everyhting, if not its off to the docs, they wont give me scans though will they?

blousy · 20/02/2008 16:36

loopylou - I think I have the same thing as you! I was up all night last night with excrutiating pain in the side of my face - it kept coming in huge waves. I wanted to chop my head off! I've just been reading about TN, but saw that it doesn't affect you at night. I had to sit up all night because the pain was so bad when I lay down. Am feeling very sorry for myself! And knackered . When is your dental appt?

loopylou6 · 20/02/2008 18:09

hiya blousy, sorry your feeling bad aswell, my dental appointment is on tuesday, its not been bad today but it comes and goes, it started before xmas had it for a few weeks then it went, and now is back again, i to am confused about the night thing, iw as up 3 nights on the run in absolute agony

MerlinsBeard · 20/02/2008 18:20

Dp has been diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia. It keeps him awake a lot.
I too have had an awful face pain today but think its infected siniuses as its my cheekbone and up and over my eye more than anywhere else. AM PG which complicates things slightly!

SO sorry you are in so much pain. If it is TN do try and get the drug ggg and saggar have had. DP waiting for that, apparently our POCT has to been seen to max the dose on another drug before thy can order the one that actually works
