Dh very stressed about his health. Numb 'dead' feeling just below rib cage on right hand side for several weeks

Has seen the doctor. ECG undertaken and came back normal. Dh who is not a hypocondriac is quite concerned (to put into perspective, dh had pneumonia a couple of years back - he thought he just was a bit tired and didn't seek medical attention until I frogmarched him to the doctor whereupon he was diagnosed ...so he is not the type to worry unnecessarily about his health)....

Pain is just below ribs on right hand side and appears to be worse after exertion (although still there sometimes at rest). It's also worse if he bends at the waist to the right hand side but easier if he bends at the waist to the left.

Pain is not acute, burning etc. He describes it as a numb sensation or a feeling a bit like having an obstruction there.

Any ideas? Doctor seems to be drawing a blank

Gall stone?
Appendicitis?
Kidney probs?

handlemecarefully · 30/09/2007 21:27

I have googled lots. Have so far dismissed abdominal aortic aneurysm, fractured rib and reflux!

Gall stone ? Mmmm - need to google that I think

i take it he's had an xray to rule out a cracked rib?

handlemecarefully · 30/09/2007 21:28

Sorry talking bollocks! Pain is on left hand side and worse when bending at the waist to the left, eased when bending to the right!

Am going to get him to go to docs again tomorrow elf. Will get him to ask about an x-ray

nerve damage. it can cause numbness for ages, but eventually recovers

handlemecarefully · 30/09/2007 21:30

How would nerve damage typically arise?

OP posts:
southeastastra · 30/09/2007 21:34

i get it in my hands sometimes (numbness for weeks). from propping myself up with elbows when working. dp has slight bells palsy, caused by virus as far as i know.

nerves are very sensitive and take ages to heal.

handlemecarefully · 30/09/2007 21:35

ummmm - guess it could be that. He has no other symptoms about from the numb / dead sensation

southeastastra · 30/09/2007 21:35

acupunture is meant to help

thirtysomething · 30/09/2007 21:35

some sort of hernia?liver inflammation (can be caused by allergy to antibiotics etc.)?

handlemecarefully · 30/09/2007 21:50

Hernia - now there is a possibility. These are things to at least question the doctor about

OP posts:
handlemecarefully · 30/09/2007 22:27

Have done more googling. Hiatus hernia could fit

Nerve pain/loss of sensation?? I've had numb patches on my upper back, and pain exactly where you describe, and it all comes from my back.

If your dh has had the all clear from the GP, might be worth seeing an osteopath or physio for a diagnostic session.

pyjamagirl · 01/10/2007 09:59

could it be renal I have had this before (a couple ofweeks ago) and was diagnosed with renal colic ,kidney stones
I had a numb feeling near the ribs weeks before the pain got severe ,it can also feel like a really bad bout of indegestion

handlemecarefully · 01/10/2007 10:41

Ummm interesting - all of this helps thanks, in narrowing it down

I would say a trapped nerve is most likely
or kidney thing

If on left is good as there is only kidney really

handlemecarefully · 01/10/2007 10:49

Yes am going to look up kidney complaints in a mo

CD took some photos over the w/end. Will email them soon (either today or tomorrow when I've downloaded them to my pc)

NOW NOW!!!!

CountessDracula · 01/10/2007 10:52

you know it could defo be a kidney infection
I get these and the first sign is usually a strange feeling on the left, when I roll over in bed it feels like there is something there but also numb

handlemecarefully · 01/10/2007 11:01

lol will do soon promise, but first have to write some tedious correspondence up for the Pre-School AGM and also have to volunteer at school this p.s. so might well be later

Could be pneumonia. Often that gives chest pain and exertion is a problem. Good luck x

3littlefrogs · 01/10/2007 19:25

Might be shingles around that nerve. Are there any spots or blisters coming out? Is the skin very sensitive or burning? Just a thought.
