Pain under rib

asmuchuseas · 29/03/2020 18:12

Over the last 15 years or so I've had a pain on and off under my right rib area gallstones were always suspected. I've had ultrasounds 3 or 4 times to investigate and there has never been anything untoward found apart from a polyp on my gallbladder.

The last ultrasound I had the scanner was really thorough and checked all of my abdomen and everything was fine.

This pain isn't constant and I can go ages without it bothering me. Over the last few days it's started again. It feels almost like trapped wind and I do get wind when I have the pain.

Today all I've eaten is a yoghurt and some slices of meat and had no pain, I've just eaten dinner and the pain is back and I've got wind.

Given the current situation I'm not sure whether I'll even be able to get a GP appointment to get checked over. Has anyone else ever had anything similar? I'm not sure if it's an IBS thing or something more.

I have IBS and have had every type of test, scan and scope you can think of to rule out anything more sinister. I get a similar pain to what you’re describing now and again and o think it is just trapped wind. It’s agony though and I’ve been doubled over with it before and been tempted to phone for an ambulance.
I now take buscopan and wind settlers every day and don’t often get the pain anymore unless I’m very stressed/anxious.
I’ve kept a food diary and seem to bloat up no matter what I eat or how little I eat. So frustrating! The gastroenterologist I saw said I likely had bad food poisoning which then inflamed things and left me with ongoing issues that are difficult to completely cure

asmuchuseas · 29/03/2020 18:23

@Caramel78 Thankyou for your reply. I have all the same things as you describe. I seem to get the pain (which isn't so much a pain as discomfort) then I'm getting wind which included lots of burping too. I also suffer with really bad acid reflux as well at times and I don't know if it's connected or not.

I am really anxious and stressed at the minute so I don't know if that's triggered this episode or not.

It could very well have done as when I’m calm and well rested I notice the pain comes a lot less. Do you take anything like buscopan? Holding a hot water bottle on the area and lying on my front can help a bit too when it’s really bad.
I had to stop drinking alcohol as it was glaring it up every time

Caramel78 · 29/03/2020 18:39

Also I’ve noticed the pains can flare up at different times of my menstrual cycle. A couple of days before my period, a couple of day’s after it’s finished and around ovulation I get bloated, gassy and pains. It’s probably from a surge or sudden drop in hormones

asmuchuseas · 29/03/2020 18:48

@Caramel78 it's funny you should mention it being linked to my cycle nice just stopped taking the contraceptive pill and have just had my first period since stopping taking it. My period ended the day the pain started 🤔. Also in all the time I was on the pill I don't think I had trouble with the pain in my rib area.

I have been drinking more alcohol lately too 🤔

I've had that for years too, had the scan and everything was fine! It must be wind or something. I've had it since I was about 10!!

asmuchuseas · 30/03/2020 10:25

I've managed to get a telephone consultation later with a nurse practitioner. I've woken up feeling sore around my right rib area and I'm really gassy.

Over the last week or so I've been eating seeded bread every day and I'm wondering if that's triggered this. Being in lockdown my diet has been different and I'm wondering if the change in diet has set it off. I'm also stressed and anxious with one thing and another.

asmuchuseas · 30/04/2020 15:04

Weirdly exactly a month later I've just started with the pain again around my rib.
I'm putting it down to eating seeded bread, I've been eating nuts as well and I don't think my stomach likes it.

Well it's flared up again. For the last three weeks or so I've had this discomfort around my right rib area again. I've been gassy, bloated and keep getting acid reflux.
GP has prescribed me Lansoprazole and referred me for another ultrasound and blood tests to see if it is my gallbladder.
I really don't know what it is as it just randomly starts feeling uncomfortable in that area.

asmuchuseas · 29/11/2020 09:19

I've got dates through for scans and bloods in the next couple of weeks.

I've now started getting stomach cramps in a morning when I need the loo and have got loose bowels (sorry for the tmi) in the past when I've had scans etc my issues are always said to probably be IBS.

The ache around my rib area seems to come and go but every day regardless of taking Lansoprazole I get acid/heartburn.

Anyone suffer the same as me and it's just IBs?

Have you had a h.pylori test?

omg35 · 30/11/2020 17:41

I haven't read the whole thread sorry but have you had your blood pressure checked recently?

Nonamesavail · 30/11/2020 17:42

Really strange but could it be anxiety. I had this and apparently its really common?

Gwenhwyfar · 30/11/2020 18:12

Why do you ask omg? I also have this problem, but less serious than the OP's. I get it when walking mainly, like a kind of stick, but I think it's more likely to be trapped wind or something else digestive than really an exercise-related thing.

I have checked it and the last time I did it it was something like 126/83. So slightly high

I do suffer with anxiety I'm not on medication for it but I have quite had anxiety at times. I have wondered if it is anxiety related but I'm not sure it is.

I've just eaten dinner and I have the ache there now. It's almost like a stitch type of pain and I'm bloated and gassy again.

@TheSilentStars

Have you had a h.pylori test?
No I haven't had one but I have heard about this before and I'm pretty sure when my mum was having an endoscopy for something they discovered she had it.
OP posts:
pinkbalconyrailing · 30/11/2020 19:46

could it be a food allergy? or gas?
I'm allergic to a couple of foods and I end up with horrendous upper right belly pain if I've eaten those foods.

I have wondered if I've developed a food intolerance but I can't pinpoint it to anything in particular.

Could it be costochondritis? This can be one sided, I was diagnosed with it on only the left side

TheSilentStars · 30/11/2020 19:56

About 60% of the world population have h.pylori and mostly with no symptoms. If you do get symptoms though it's burpy indigestion after meals mainly. I had it about 10 years ago.

asmuchuseas · 30/11/2020 20:02

I'm just getting ache/discomfort around my right rib. Sometimes in my back. I'm bloated, gassy, have awful wind, get indigestion/heartburn and in the last few days I've had stomach cramps in the morning and an urgency for the loo.

OP posts:
asmuchuseas · 07/12/2020 18:34

Ok, so I have stopped drinking coffee and haven't had any milk or bread and it seems to have subsided the last few days? Don't know if there is a link to this or if it's just coincidence!

OP posts:
asmuchuseas · 14/12/2020 15:34

Ultrasound showed no gallstones just a polyp which I already knew I had. So depending on what my GP decides it's a case of the polyp being monitored to check it isn't growing, surgery to remove it, scammer thought that was possibly causing me the aching in that area

OP posts:
MrsMigginsMate · 14/12/2020 15:37

Sludge wouldn't show in the gallbladder, only stones show on scans but it can still cause problems so it's worth mentioning this to your doctor, see if they think it's a possibility.
