Hi, this is weird so hoping someone can come and put my mind at rest. My tongue felt itchy and uncomfortable down the right side this morning when I woke up. Since worn off and have gone about my day.
Was eating lunch and felt a swelling under my chin, on the right side. Got up to have look and the whole right side of my neck has swollen up, I look like I have mumps. I can still swallow and breathe, and feel well other than a bit panic stricken. Anybody any clue what this might be about? The swelling is soft and slightly tender, no lump there as such. Thanks

I get this when I have a blocked salivary gland - gargle with salt water and warm compress helps- it will eventually work it’s way out. Mine came out through the inside of my cheek and was a tiny sliver of calcium. So painful and I feel for you.

MollysMummy2010 · 29/03/2020 15:40

Just to add, the swelling got huge just under my ear when I ate.

Bugsy73 · 29/03/2020 16:10

Thankyou for responding. It's actually gone down a bit now. I've taken some piriton but it was going down on its own. I feel a bit sick and tired now, but maybe due to the adrenaline rush I got when I thought my face was going to explode! Do you think the odd itchy tongue is a factor too?

I got a strange feeling in my tongue but the swelling really flared up when I ate. Hope you are ok.

Bugsy73 · 29/03/2020 16:56

I've just had biscuit and its gone up again???

I had this, too, one side of my face and jaw blew up like a balloon! Mine also went down for a bit until I ate again. Agree that it's a blocked salivary gland.

Thisisnotwhatiwant · 29/03/2020 17:01

Sounds like a blocked saliva gland to me too... comes up when you go to eat!

Bugsy73 · 29/03/2020 17:06

Did you need to see a GP? Obviously that could be problematic currently. How long did it take to sort itself out?

Thanks all. It feels slightly uncomfortable now.

Sounds like a blocked saliva gland if it goes up when you eat.

Makes sure you drink loads. Suck sour foods - sherbet lemons are really good. Sour sweets, or lemons that type of thing -whatever you can find. You want to stimulate saliva flow

Then try to massage the gland as well, massage from your neck towards your chin to try and unblock the gland, normally it's a small stone.

I would see how it goes. It might sort itself out, it normally does. I wouldn't see the GP now but see how you get on

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 29/03/2020 17:22

Mumps causes swelling of the saliva glands. Hence why it looks like mupms

Bugsy73 · 29/03/2020 17:31

I really appreciate all your advice and reassurance. I think am extra anxious at the moment with all that is going on.

When I had a bad case of oral thrush I had swelling under my chin.

I just wondered as you said your tongue was itchy. Mine was really sore - at it's worst I found it hard to eat.

I had to get drops and pills from the GP. Have you got white markings on your tongue?

Bugsy73 · 29/03/2020 18:00

No, nothing visible in my mouth at all. I've got some sherbet lemons so will crack on with those.

Facial swellings become an Emergency when they affect your swallowing or breathing. Sounds like a salivary gland stone OP which is worrying for you but self limiting. When things have calmed down, you should see your DENTIST not GP. You may need a maxillofacial radiologist to have a look at your glands.

Hope you're ok.

TinyStripe · 29/03/2020 18:07

I had this too and it actually was mumps! It was extremely painful though. Almost unbearable.

gamerchick · 29/03/2020 18:10

You'll have to try and dislodge the stone yourself. I did with mine using a fingernail and massaging the area. It'll keep going up when you eat, but it'll go down again. It's just annoying.

Bugsy73 · 29/03/2020 18:12

Just massaging on my neck/chin? Will it come up to my mouth?

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 29/03/2020 19:26

Yes, your saliva gland exits under your tongue or in your cheek depending on which gland it is.

So you basically want to try and massage the gland to force saliva into the mouth.
It depends if its swelling under your chin or in your cheek

If its under your chin start by your neck and massage forwards towards your chin, in a pushing motion, like you are pushing toothpaste out of a tube. You can also do this motion inside your mouth under your tongue.

If the swelling is in your cheek start underneath your ear and in pushing motion massage towards the corner of your mouth

Bugsy73 · 29/03/2020 19:55

Thank you so much. It's under my chin. And I just eat and drink (wine) as normal in the meantime?

gamerchick · 29/03/2020 20:55

You'll never take that gland for granted again when it's sorted. Our bodies are amazing really Grin

It's just irritating. It won't harm you I don't think.

Bugsy73 · 29/03/2020 21:09

Grin of all the times to get something inconsequential but very irritating!! Thanks so much to all of you. I really freaked out earlier.

OP posts:
Bugsy73 · 29/03/2020 21:32

Will it just pop into my mouth? Does it hurt?

OP posts:
Bugsy73 · 30/03/2020 18:02

Hi again, so, today the swelling is less but still there, not going up too much when I eat and coming down quicker. It is a bit more tender but could be just because I have been pressing on it a bit.
New thing is that I keep getting almost like a salty taste in my mouth and my mouth feels like it is watering a bit? Any of you had similar??

Lemons!
