Hi, this is weird so hoping someone can come and put my mind at rest. My tongue felt itchy and uncomfortable down the right side this morning when I woke up. Since worn off and have gone about my day.
Was eating lunch and felt a swelling under my chin, on the right side. Got up to have look and the whole right side of my neck has swollen up, I look like I have mumps. I can still swallow and breathe, and feel well other than a bit panic stricken. Anybody any clue what this might be about? The swelling is soft and slightly tender, no lump there as such. Thanks

Hi OP,

I have had exactly the same thing this week. Even down to the bursts of salty fluid in the mouth on the affected side. It never occurred to me it was saliva gland, but I found your thread late last night and it all fits.

The advice you've been given here is very sound. I found a video on youtube which says you need to drink loads and loads of water. Not the odd glass but loads to help dilute the saliva and wash away any stone or infection. Warm compresses are also helpful. I actually slept with my face on a warm hot water bottle for a couple of nights. I did that simply because it soothed the discomfort (mine was very tender and sore to the touch), not realising it was actually helping in other ways.

Then as others have said self massage. Depending on which gland it is (sounds like yours is the one under the tongue whereas mine is in the cheek - front of ear) you massage towards the mouth. Sucking sour sweets is also helpful as it stimulates the gland to produce saliva, so more chance to wash out whatever is causing the problem.

fannyFernackerpan, what a marvellous name!! How weird that we have it at the exact same time! I messaged my dentist yesterday and he said just to keep an eye incase it gets infected. Have you had it before? I have got sherbert lemons so have been sucking on those and will up the fluid intake also. Please report back and let me know how you progress. I'm not too keen on these minor ailments, they make me nervous Grin

Never had it before and I think mine is/was definitely infected.

I was so scared I rang 111 on Saturday and I was given a Dr's appointment, but I declined to go and got a nurse/practioner to ring me instead. She never suggested saliva gland, but I think I may have steered her in the wrong direction.

I got a sickly sore throat on one side last Tuesday. Was concerned as I know that's a symptom of CV19, so I was quite anxious about it. That lasted into Wednesday morning then disappeared. Then it felt like my ear was hurting so I put some ear drops in. All week I had this uncomfortable feeling on that side of my face and painful to eat. Then Friday evening it was really sore and warm to the touch.

Saturday morning I woke up and I looked like a chipmunk on one side. That really scared me so I rang 111 and eventually by the time they called me back it had started to go down. Obviously I talked about the throat and the ear, not thinking anything else. She said it was good sign as it shows your immune system is fighting back when the glands are up. All week that side of my face has felt odd and in the corner of my mouth it felt like a cold sore was coming so I kept putting Zovirax on it , but nothing appeared.

It was only when you I found your thread it realised - saliva gland. The people who responded to you nailed it with their descriptions and of course the salty fluid thing. The first time that happened the swelling went down significantly and when I press or massage it, I also get the salty fluid in the mouth.

Mine is a lot better, still a slight swelling, but much, much smaller and less tenderness and pain. No more issues when eating either. One day I didn't eat at all, just drank green tea all day.

So fingers crossed on the mend.

That should read tickly sore throat!

Bugsy73 · 31/03/2020 11:28

Ah bless you, it sounds as though yours has been quite nasty. Mine is still up and down, but definitely not getting as swollen as it did initially. It did really freak me out Grin. Now in its reduced state, can still feel it, bit lumpy and bumpy. Just weird!

It is weird, especially that first gush of salty fluid. I was doing something or other and it just happened. Moved my head and it felt like something had burst and flooded my mouth. But I noticed straight away the swelling had gone down. As I thought my swollen gland was caused by an ear infection I couldn't figure out how the hell it had got into my mouth!

Then I found your thread and bingo!
