Anyone here taken/taken HRT or oestrogen tablets? Side effects question.

Hi

As some of you will have read here I have recently had a hysteroscopy and partial treatment for Asherman's Syndrome (adhesions on the uterus).

Followin mthe surgery I have to take, for one month only, some hormone replacement tablets to encourage growth of the cervical lining.

I have been given HRT tablets (oestrogen) for 28 days, and for the last 10 days another hormone.

I have now been taking the HRT - 6mg a day - for the past 8 days. But I feel lousy. I feel very emotional - everything is a strain, anything has me close to tears. I am tired and lethargic the whole time. I have abdominal cramps and back aches still and have had bleeding one and off for the past 7 days (it was my period last week but this has been very very light and very very short for past 5 years deue to Ashermans, and after the surgery they said there was little lining left this month anyway). The bleeding is red - so not old blood - and there is more of it than normal.

I just feel rubbish really.

My sick note runs out tomorrow, following my surgery and I have no idea how I will cope back at work - I work in a male prison on a one to one basis with the men - on Tuesday. I'll be asleep or ranting by 9am!

Are these noraml side affects of HRT? Is there anything I can do? I know I only have this for a month but I feel really low and debilitated by it.

I need to make an appointment to see the GP tomorrow to get more HRT (hospital only had half the quantity available), so will ask about it there. But wondered if any MNetters have used HRT and can advise.

Thanks.

Just realised some people may prefer not to mention on here for personal reasons perhaps. If you are willing to tell me your experience and advice you can CAT me or email me on claire(dot)king13(at)btinternet(dot)com

I was given the combined pill to treatm my ashermans....sorry, missed you other posts on this.

I also had an IUD in place, and bled for 3 weeks out of 4.

not sure if that is any helpl to you.

Hulababy · 09/09/2007 20:16

Thanks. Did it make you feel this lousy? Wasn't expecting tobe feeling like this this long after the op.

Not sure if I will go through the same again after the next op in 3 months.

I was OK, except I was tired and crampy a lot of the time. I cope OK with work, but used to get worn out at 'socials' and would rather vegetate.

I had a very 'oestrogenic' COC, Cilest. Not sure if they still use COCs for Asherman's or not, my treatment was over 10 years ago.

I feel sure that it was the IUD that cause all the extra bleeding in my case. I had the hormone treatment for 6 months but they took out the IUD after 3, and I was better almost immediatly

hertsnessex · 09/09/2007 20:30

Donk · 09/09/2007 20:37

I'm on HRT following (slightly early) menopause . Its a low dose pill, but has not caused any adverse symptoms of which I am aware.

Blandmum · 09/09/2007 20:39

Do you think, hb that some of the problems that you are getting are becauser you have the HRT on top of your 'nromal' oestrogen?

that might explain why Donk was OK on it (as she wouldn't have much of her own oestrogen....sorry if that is an innaproriate thing to say Donk}

foxinsocks · 09/09/2007 20:42

Hi hula

I'm on HRT at the moment. Like the pill, there are lots of different types. I'm on Tibilone (trade name Livial) which apparently has fewer side effects than some of the others.

Might be worth asking when you go in - maybe you need to try another type.

ivykaty44 · 09/09/2007 20:43

How you describe yourself is just how my mum was when she was put on HRT, crying, feeling lousy, very emotional - she took it for three weeks and then stopped...

Hulababy · 09/09/2007 20:44

Quite probably mb. I did think that - the 6mg of HRt plus the hormones I have myself. And I do know that I do produce these hormones - all my tests for those came back fine in the past, and my own observations when TTC suggested so too.

Donk and hertsnessex - thanks for your comments. hertsnessex - I suspect it must be similar to what I am having right now. Can't imagine six months feeling like this. Nightmare.

Feel so guilty if I ask for more time off work. Have already had so much sick leave in past couple of years, as the monthly pain from the Ashermans has been so bad. I would just like to feel normal rather than a gibbering wreck!

Hulababy · 09/09/2007 20:44

foxinsocks - not sure they'd bother changing it as it is only for this month - I hope anyway. Will speak to GP tomorrow though.

Blandmum · 09/09/2007 20:46

Don't feel guilty just because you are 'ill' in an organ that the rest of the prison doesn't have!

Jeez, I remember how much pain I was in with the Asherman's. I couldn't stand, let alone do anything else.

Please, be kind to yourself.

Who will it help if you make yourself iller?

Hulababy · 09/09/2007 20:46

Been given Climaval - 6 x 1mg tablets each morning

Hulababy · 09/09/2007 20:48

mb - I know. And I have already worked out that no one really cares if you do drag yourself in when feeling rubbish. Will have to see how GP feels about it all I guess. It is 9pm and I am shattered!!!

Thanks all. Will stop whinging and feeling sorry for myself in a little while no doubt. Darn tablets!

Hula - sorry to hear your felling crappy, let us know if there is anything we can do.

DH can pick up your dd tomorrow if you want and bring her here if taht would help.

foxinsocks · 09/09/2007 20:51

that sounds like a very high dose hula

why do you have to take so much oestrogen?

Blandmum · 09/09/2007 20:52

Glad that you are going to see the GP. Please let me know if I can be of any help.

foxinsocks · 09/09/2007 20:53

I'm not surprised that's making you feel odd tbh.

I would have a word with the GP about the way it's making you feel.

I just looked up that drug and it seems the normal dose when it's used as HRT is a 1mg tablet a day (or in some cases 1x a 2mg tablet).

Blandmum · 09/09/2007 20:56

the reason that hb is being given such a high does to to try to re-line her uterus after treatment for a condition called Ashermans Syndrome. All COC and HRT use for this will be 'off licence' as it is quite a rare condition. When I had it, they gave me the combined pill.#

But agree that doc pro needs to look at the dose.

foxinsocks · 09/09/2007 20:57

actually, reading that back, I didn't mean to alarm you .

There's obviously a reason why they want you to take that much - was just trying to reassure you that the side effects you are feeling are probably because you're taking a fair whack of hormone.

Really hope it is all over soon and you start to feel better hula.

foxinsocks · 09/09/2007 20:57

sorry, cross posted with you mb! Didn't mean to pry hula! hope you feel better soon.

Hulababy · 09/09/2007 21:02

Katz - thanks, sure I'll be fine. Not really like me to feel a misery Thanks for offer with DD. Sure I'll be fine but if I am struggling with GP times, if only after school, can I call your Dh about having her then? Would be easier to go to GPs without her!

foxinsocks - now worries. As mb says Ashermans is pretty uncommon and therefore the treatment is not that usually either. I basically have very little cervical lining, and the HRT is to encourage it to grow, esp now some of the adhesions have been taken away. I guess the high dose is for that reason.

mb - will def see GP. At the very least I have to get the final 14 days tablets for this HRT.
