Microscopic haematuria

Hi there, I randomly tested my urine a week ago and it came up as positive for blood, nothing else, instant panic thinking I've got kidney or bladder cancer now, seen my gp who sent off my urine n the results came back clear, no blood in my urine yet the dipstick and several dipsticks I've done remain positive for blood. I'm worried sick, I have to send off another two samples which will now be delayed due to starting my period yesterday. Anyone to help me? God knows I need help.

I had blood in my urine so off I went to the doctors as per the advertising campaign, and he said don't worry unless it happens again. He tested my urine (clear) and sent me on my way This left me a bit concerned but he said he would only refer me if it happened again. No help to you sorry but confusing messages.

Try not to worry. Some people just do (including me). I've had all the gold standard tests for cancer. Nothing. I even saw a urologist privately. He thought I was bonkers. He explained some people just do. The only time it's if any real concern is if you can see it in the toilet bowl. He told me only about 2% of middle aged women with micro blood in their wee end up being anything sinister.

Also if you were near or on your period when you tested then this could be why.

If you've no other obvious symptoms don't worry but if you are offered further investigations (cystoscopy or ultrasound) then have them for peace of mind.

Hi Tanfastic, I read your previous thread from maybe a few years ago on here and it gave me great relief to hear that you and a couple of others on the thread had normal results. Do you still have microscopic haematuria?
I've just asked my gp for a referral letter to see a urologist privately.
My urine test came back as no blood cells in it yet dipstick showed maximum blood but nothing else.
Oh I'd love to be normal, just don't like seeing it on the dipstick xx

Hi, I don't know if I still have it to be honest. Since I had the tests I've not really thought about it and I've had no symptoms. To be honest I'd rather not know as it caused me great anxiety at the time 😂

Whilst my investigations were ongoing I had several dipstick tests and they all showed micro blood. Even the day of my cystoscopy it showed micro blood but then nothing out of the ordinary was found. Consultant told me no investigations further were needed as a certain number of the population just do have it.

Incidentally, when the samples were sent to the hospital for cultures they sometimes came back negative for blood even though the dipsticks said positive. I don't really get it to be honest but I certainly don't worry about it anymore.

I have microscopic heamaturia most of the time. I picked up on it when checking myself for ketones in my urine, the surgery then did 3 dipsticks on three different occasions and then referred me for a ultrasound, which was clear, then a cystoscopy which was also normal.

I think I’m just one of those who has it, as does my young daughter. The only thing that worry’s me slightly is I won’t be able to acknowledge it if it was a symptom of anything because I know I generally have it anyway iyswim? But then , as other poster said, usually only a worry if it’s visible to the naked eye.

I'm in a right state today thinking ive got kidney or bladder cancer, dipstick stick maximum for blood n nothing else.

Shaking and crying and I'm not sure if I'm imagining it but slight back pain too.
Google can go spin as it's making me sick with worry.
Please help if you can.

Please stop worrying. If you think you have an infection get yourself an emergency appointment for antibiotics.

I'm a nurse so carry dipsticks with me but tbh think they are available on Amazon.
I'm 42, non smoker, never smoked.
Just very worried as I don't fit the referral criteria as says over 45.

Seen gp yesterday who said there was blood in the lab sample 10 high power field or something like that, I've read over 3 is abnormal but they class 10 or under as normal. Booked into see private gp Monday n will offer to pay for scans.
Taking second urine sample to drs today to send off to lab. This waiting is awful.
Very worried. Xx

Try not to worry, you've nothing to worry about!

Hopefully the consultant on Monday will be able to put your mind at rest somewhat. It would be very unusual for a non smoking woman of your age Who hasn't got a history of working with chemicals to have bladder cancer. There's about a 1-2% chance! If that! This is what they told me. Even when I went for my cystoscopy the consultant told me out of about 25 cystoscopies he does for microscopic blood he only finds something in about six cases and by finds something g that doesn't necessarily mean anything nasty. The rest are just people like you and me who just have it with no explanation.

I know you will worry until you've had the test and scan but please use me as an example. I worried myself sick for weeks for no reason!. I wouldn't bother paying for scans they will come through quick enough x

@tanfastic thank you so so much for replying, it really does mean a lot, once this is all sorted I'll never again test my urine. It's causing me an extreme amount of worry. I can't eat, sleep, smile, anything. I'm so so glad you are here helping me through this. X

Are you testing from the same pot of dipsticks?
Throw them away and open a new pack.
I get loads of spurious results when the pot has been exposed to air, even if they are within the use by date.

Clastegra I had 5 episodes of macroscopic haematuria in December & January - nothing showed up on culture & the GP couldn't refer me as a two week patient as I'm under 45. She referred me to a private urologist who saw me within a week - renal tract ultrasound, bloods & cystoscopy done on the same day. If you can see a urologist privately it would be a huge weight off your mind.

It's +++ on dipsticks wherever I am ( I'm a locum nurse) lab test said normal.

Yes I've asked my GP to write a referral letter for me and I'm seeing a private gp on Monday who I think can do the same. I desperately need these scans n tests as I'm so very worried it will show cancer.

It won't show anything I'd put money on it! If you were pissing blood in the toilet bowl I'd be more worried. However I remember being where you were a couple of years' ago and being out of my mind with worry until I had the tests so I understand how you are feeling.

The odds are massively in your favour op! Try and focus on that.

Incidentally, what made you check your wee in the first place? Did you have other symptoms?

Hi no no other symptoms, just remember my wee looking a bit cloudy but I had been very unwell with cold and then severe diarrhea so probably not much fluid in me, I thought I'll just check my wee n bang it was there, n hasn't left, been there 2 weeks now. Had my kidney blood results back and all within range. Just hope these scans don't show cancer, I suffer so much with health anxiety, it has taken over my life since finding blood on that dipstick. X

You've just got to focus on it being highly unlikely that it's anything sinister. If you think a out it, out of 100 people with micro blood and 99 people having nothing wrong with them.....well you are going to be one of those 99 people. These are the stats so please try and put it into perspective. The tests are just to rule it out. They won't take a chance on the 1%

For a start at least three or four people on this thread who had microscopic blood in the same position as you have had nothing wrong with them. Try and take some comfort in that.

Just got back from seeing private urologist who has scared me a lot, said 20% chance it's something, said it's very worrying. I have no symptoms, only microscopic haematuria. Got me in for private scans on Tuesday. Please help me if you can, feel like I've already been diagnosed n it's a living hell. All the research I've done and threads I've read suggest no where near 20%, he couldn't feel any masses, said hopefully if it is anything only one kidney would be involved. Drove home a jibbering wreck.

I don't know who you've seen but that's absolute rubbish! 20% maybe that it's something but not 20% it's cancer! Who did you see?

Not saying I disbelieve you op btwI. Just astonished as I had a completely different experience when I saw one. He completely put my mind at rest and that was before I had the tests.

Mine was a very cold man, didn't reassure me at all. So glad I have this thread to help me. Nothing he said seems to tally with anything I've read. I had a complete meltdown in the clinic, he said we'll all patients aren't text book n hes got a 23yr old with it. I was very shocked and very worried. This thread is keeping me going, I read it over n over. Thank you all XX you are really helping me xx
