Flu? Sitting here crying.

Symptoms -

Brain feels like it's being squashed by a nutcracker, made worse by doing anything other than lying down

Entire body aches

Eyeballs sore and hot

Can't stay awake for more than 30 minutes at a time

Very painful chesty cough that has made my throat feel like I've swallowed razor blades. Can hear the mucus in my chest but nothing coming up yet. I'm trying my absolute hardest not to cough though because it hurts my head chest and throat so much. Also very wheezy.

Also one minute I am roasting and sweaty the next minute I have to crawl to put the heating on because I am freezing.

So it's probably just the flu but I am really struggling and crying with the pain.

What is my best action plan here to at least get myself to the point where I'm not crying please?

You poor thing sounds awful. Can you make yourself a mug of hot water with some lemon in it and take a couple of paracetamol? Get into bed with a hot water bottle? Delegate anything that absolutely has to be done today?

greenelephantscarf · 22/01/2019 12:38

drink a large glass of water.
take ibuprofen or paracetamol for the pain.
sleep as much as you can.
drink some more water.
hopefully you feel better soon.

ItShouldHaveBeenJingleJess · 22/01/2019 12:39

Oh you poor thing. People often say 'just the flu' but its much worse than a regular cold. Could you manage to get to the docs? Worth looking into the flu jab as well if you're asthmatic /have a weak immune system to protect yourself in the future. Feel better soon.

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 22/01/2019 12:40

If you are wheezy I would calling the GP or 111 to ask advice. Feel better soon.

hiphopapotamuses · 22/01/2019 12:44

God I've just got over the flu - it's been three weeks and yesterday was the first day I didn't feel like I was on mile 20 of a marathon whenever I stood up and shuffled anywhere! (Though the worst was over after about day 5/6)
Paracetamol, ibuprofen, lots of fluids, rest as much as you can.

Ragevibration · 22/01/2019 12:52

THREE WEEKS?? cries

In all whole adult life the only time I have felt worse than this was when I had glandular fever.

I was meant to be going to a funeral today as well which obviously I can't so I feel bad about that too.

My mum is bring over some lemons and honey and some throat spray stuff after she's been to the funeral. Sometimes you still need your mum at 30!

Nothing helpful to add but I just wanted to say I've had flu twice and understand how awful you are feeling.

I would take medicine at regular intervals and sleep as much as you can.

Clickncollect · 22/01/2019 13:04

Oh OP, I think I’m just getting over the same virus. Literally was bedridden for 5 days and even now (day 7) I just about managed to have a shower and Potter about.
Horrid - get well soon!

PourFemme · 22/01/2019 13:08

I feel your pain, OP. I’ve only been ill for 3 days and it’s doing my head in! Sore throat, cough, snotty (nose is red raw), headache, jaw and neck pain, cystitis. Urgh.

I’ve slept for hours & hours, but it’s not restful sleep as I’m in pain, freezing cold one hour, sweating the next.

I had the flu jab three weeks ago, so not sure if it’s flu or not?!

Doc gave me antibiotics yesterday for the UTI. Really stressed at missing work. Fingers crossed we get better soon Flowers.

HumphreyCobblers · 22/01/2019 13:12

When I had this I took over the counter codeine and paracetamol . It was still unbelievably grim but I was able to care for my small baby (I already knew I wasn't a fast metaboliser of codeine).

madmum5811 · 22/01/2019 13:13

After nine days crawled into surgery when it eased up. Oh joy a chest infection so antibiotics. I have asthma. It is grim.

Ragevibration · 22/01/2019 13:14

I had been thinking about asking DP to pick up the Nurofen plus with codine on his way home. I'll take anything that'll take the edge off right now to be honest.

In other news (sorry not the point of the thread but appreciate having people to talk too) my mum has just lost her shit with Mr and said I am selfish for missing the funeral and I only ever think about myself. So that's great.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 22/01/2019 13:15

I'm asthmatic.

In my living memory, I've had 'flu twice.

It floored me in the way you describe each time.

Rest. Fluids. Layers. Cold remedies. That's it.

HumphreyCobblers · 22/01/2019 13:16

Sorry you are getting grief. Proper flu is like nothing else I have ever been through, I think sometimes people don't understand how bad it can be.

bobstersmum · 22/01/2019 13:18

It's not just the flu, flu is awful, you need to rest and don't expect to be better for a week or more, have plenty fluids op, take ibuprofen but only if you have managed to eat something first.

frompampastobroadway · 22/01/2019 13:22

Real flu is awful, it really can floor you for weeks. Your mum? When she sees you maybe she will realise how ill you are.

loopy42 · 22/01/2019 13:32

Just got over this myself, couldn't sleep at all as I was in too much pain

Didn't move off the sofa for 5 days solid other than to use the bathroom.

Nurofen plus was my best friend and only thing that took the edge off allowing me to sleep

IYCBABeKind · 22/01/2019 14:16

Tell your mum to bring Mr with her and make sure you have a really good spluttering cough in his face, give him one of your snottery tissues to put in the bin for good measure and when he gets the flu and you're feeling much better you can give him zero sympathy and insist he takes you somewhere really noisy!! Full sympathy for you! My little has just gotten over what I suspected was the flu and now I've come down with a horrendous cold so feeling your pain right now ThanksCakeBrew

Munchyseeds · 22/01/2019 17:20

Take night nurse later as long as you don't need to go anywhere tomorrow....at least then you will get some sleep
Hope you feel better soon

Ragevibration · 22/01/2019 18:33

Nurofen plus with codine, paracetamol and throat numbing spray and I managed to have a bath well DP bathed me and have some soup at least.

Still feel like death and dripping with sweat though. 3/4 of the senior management team including my boss were off with the same thing all last week so at least I don't feel bad about missing work.

Somewhereovertheroad · 26/01/2019 22:44

How are you now op?

I am a few days ahead of you, started last Sunday but still have the cough and no energy!!

Have improved a little from yesterday though.

Ragevibration · 26/01/2019 22:54

A little better - still have the cough and the temperature and a headache and aching eyes but I have managed to get up and about today at long last!!! My boss still has the cough and she was a week ahead of me though Sad

OP posts:
Somewhereovertheroad · 26/01/2019 22:58

Just don't over do it.

I am finally getting through the days with only 1 or 2 painkillers but the fatigue and the cough are still bad.

Thanks I hope tomorrow's a better day for you.

confusednorthner · 26/01/2019 23:01

Oh I feel dog you it's awful. Gp told me the strain going round isn't one they vaccinated against so my flu jab was useless against it!

confusednorthner · 26/01/2019 23:03

Ddog has nothing to do with it dog = you
