Naproxen experience

Cabbagesoupsucks · 14/11/2018 06:27

I've been prescribed Naproxen to reduce inflammation around a trapped nerve..I hate taking medication anyway but after one 500mg dose I feel so sick with stomach cramps and been vomiting, nauseous etc. They gave me a medicine ome something that protects the stomach and I took that, then an hour later ate dinner and took the Naproxen. I actually can't bear to take another one. I'm self employed and have to cancel all my work today due to this sickness.

So I'm just going to stop taking it. Anyone else? Am I supposed to battle through and eventually you get used to it?

You are being slightly ridiculous. Take the naproxen. It really helps.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 14/11/2018 06:35

No just ask them for something else.

MrsBartlet · 14/11/2018 06:37

I would be very careful OP. Dd was prescribed naproxen at the start of the year and she only had a few and got severe gastritis. It took months to recover from this and even now she still has food and drink she cannot have as a result of the gastritis. She lost loads of weight in the process and had to drop out of her final year of university. Some people cannot tolerate that whole group of drugs - you are not being ridiculous!

wheresmyliveship · 14/11/2018 06:37

I was like this for my first day (or two) on Naproxen - slurring words and being sick - but then it was absolutely fine. Just persevere!

ThanosSavedMe · 14/11/2018 06:37

Why is the op being ridiculous? It obviously isn’t helping if the side effects are that bad.

Get back to your gp and ask if there is something else you can take.

I’ve recently been prescribed co-codamol for a broken bone, I’m unable to take it due to bad side effects so have been advised to take something else instead.

Hope you find something that you’re able to take op

ChishandFips33 · 14/11/2018 06:37

I used Naproxen for a while for RA symptoms (no stomach protectant was prescribed back then)

I didn't really see it as much different than Ibuprofen/Diclofenic in terms of any side effects

Try another dose but keep an open mind/think positive

Trapped nerves

ChishandFips33 · 14/11/2018 06:38

Posted too soon!

Trapped nerves are so painful and with lack of sleep etc they can make you feel sickly too

AConvivialHost · 14/11/2018 06:39

I can't take Naproxen - exactly the same reaction, nausea and actual vomiting, I also had the sensation that it was burning my stomach lining. Is there nothing else they could prescribe?

Fairylea · 14/11/2018 06:40

I’ve had a course of it for shoulder pain and I found it helpful- but I didn’t have any stomach stuff prescribed with it. The doctor said as it was a short term thing I didn’t need it (others have said this is wrong!) anyway when I did take the omeprazole for something else that made me incredibly sick and i realise I can’t take that at all but naproxen on its own is fine! Maybe it’s the omeprazole that’s actually upsetting you? There are other similar things they can give you if you wanted to still take something for your stomach. Nexium over the counter is often better tolerated.

Groovee · 14/11/2018 06:43

I'm very limited in pain relief so eat something very stodgy like porridge before taking naproxen or a stew with lots of stodgy veg too.

Tumilnaughts · 14/11/2018 06:46

I was prescribed The same earlier this year also for a trapped nerve. Always had to eat before I took it. I still would get reflux and mild stomach ache but it helped with the vomiting. Smile

Cabbagesoupsucks · 14/11/2018 06:54

Thanks. I hadn't considered it would be the omiprazole.

I can't take Naxprofen as it makes me feel too sick. Take ibuprofen so at least you are getting an anti inflammatory in you.

lilygirl81 · 14/11/2018 06:57

I can't take naproxen as it is awful on my stomach. They reluctantly changed me to diclofenac, but it is not widely used now as it can cause heart issues.

ferrier · 14/11/2018 06:59

There are alternatives.
Naproxen did absolutely nothing for me. Didn't give me any side effects but had zero effect on the pain too.
Ask for something else.

JellySlice · 14/11/2018 07:03

Naproxen is amazing, but you must not take it if it makes you so sick . Though is there any chance you could actually have a stomach bug, rather than a reaction to the medication?

cherrytree63 · 14/11/2018 07:09

I can't take Naproxen as it gives me severe diarrhoea and I've also had a PR bleed with it.
I can tolerate Diclofenic though.
Definitely ask for an alternative, if you're vomiting you might not be getting the full effect anyway.

Iamblossom · 14/11/2018 07:16

I was prescribed it for my back and it spaced me out and made me very sick indeed so I didn't use it any more.

RubyBoots7 · 14/11/2018 07:22

Prescribed it once after surgery. I had to run out an office mid meeting and didn't quite make the toilet before I projectile vomited my lunch up everywhere all over the cubicle. Wouldn't touch it again. Maybe if I persevered that effect would wear off but yeah, sod that!

Kidssendingmenuts · 14/11/2018 07:29

I've used it before and it's awful. Made me sick wen I had sciatica but also made my legs numb!! Not helpful when your a dog walker. In the end I just switched to a stronger cocodamol x

EradicatetheDoubt · 14/11/2018 07:34

They do a gastro resistant one if you ask for it or you can tale Ompeprazole with the regular one.

You have to make sure you take it on a full stomach.

They say the lowest dose for the shortest time is best.

Obviously never ever take Aspirin or Ibruprofen with it.

SoyDora · 14/11/2018 07:36

Yes, I also have this reaction to naproxen. It’s on my medical notes that I shouldn’t be prescribed it. The stomach pains and vomiting were horrific.

bruffin · 14/11/2018 07:40

You are being slightly ridiculous. Take the naproxen. It really helps.
That was really helpful!

My mother had a really awful stomach reaction to naproxen. There is no point in being pain free if you cant leave the toilet all day because you are vomiting

redsummershoes · 14/11/2018 07:41

it's a very effective medicine but the side effects can be awful.

dc had to take it for a year fir an inflammatory condition. dc was fine with it.
important to take with or just after food and with omeprazole.

I know someone who had a heart attack from taking naproxen, which is a known risk, but very rare.

SoyDora · 14/11/2018 07:48

The pain caused by the naproxen was worse for me than the pain it was supposed to be treating. Excruciating. Sometimes it doesn’t ‘really help’.
