he's 14 weeks. finally got the minging cold we've all had. Took him to the docs today; he's not ill enough to have to go to hospital...yet. Am keeping an eye on him of course, main worry is I can't get him to sleep and he's going to get completely knackered and therefore more ill.
He's back to the docs tomorrow morning (am in NZ) meanwhile can take him to 24 hrs place if I am worried/he gets worse
So I won't be getting any sleep again will I - it's horrid
Feel a bit of a fraud moaning on here as people have babies in hospital, but actually feel quite upset & tense about it. Hate hearing him wheezing

it's just after 7.30am and he's been asleep since 1am which is good (even I have had some sleep). His breathing seems much better while he's asleep - is this normal or is he on the mend? Also, I worry as he's now in quite a deep sleep and his breathing is so faint!

doctors in an hour and a half. coughing like mad myself, we all sound like we have consumption

Awww MrsJC , your poor little man

My ds had this just after xmas last year when he was 4 months old. It was awful. Luckily we escaped hospital but the dr had said he wouldn't think twice about admitting him if we had any doubts or prefered him being there.

Whilst he had it, the dr told us to let him sleep in his rocker as the back adjusted so we could keep him elevated. He also said if he didnt like that, tilt the cot as much as possible.
I think we managed 2 nights in the rocker and then after that we had him in the cot tilted.

Hope he gets better very very soon.

Hi, sorry to hear that he is sick.

If he is doing lots of coughing then a friend (also in NZ) sent an email to tell me that vicks vaporub thickly on the soles of the feet covered in socks works wonders.

Maybe the baby balm version would work too.

Sorry to here your babe is poorly.
Ds2 had this not long ago and it was very upsetting and frustrating re. the feeding etc.
For my lo it eventually turned into croup, but not before he kept havinf busts of stopping breathing!

I was a wreck for about a week then when the croup came I relaxed a bit.

Not very nice, you have my sympathy. Xx

dont feel bad.keep a very close eye on him and take him in straight away if you are atall concerned.

nappyaddict-.the doctors where i live are great,but when my dd2 was in leeds on the normal childrens ward there were loads of babies arriving with bronchiolitis,and so many of the parents had been fobbed off by their gps.

elibean-i bought a breathing monitor for dd2 when she got out of hospital,as i was so scared.i took her to the doctors every week till she was 3 months old as i was so paranoid about her getting ill again.

the thing is,my dd ended up in intensive care with this illness.i hate when doctors try to fob people off.
but she was so ill she slept all the time and didnt even want to feed,so i would take not being able to sleep as a good sign,even though it is a PITA.

OH! I've just seen this! Poor little ds and poor you!

I bet that sleep last night has helped him recharge his batteries. Hope all goes well at the dr and that you get some sleep too!

have just got back from doctor, he is about the same as yesterday. So still keeping an eye on him and using the inhaler, and back to docs tomorrow. It was fecking freezing when we went out with frost on the ground which I'm sure didn't help much!
he is still feeding just about OK thank goodness, although now have blistered nipple from the biting.

But good news about the feeding and that he's coping well.

Cold here too. It's amazing about NZ houses isn't it! The people who lived in this house before us had no heating - made of sterner stuff than us obviously. We've put in undercarpet heating and and have an electric blanket and have our eye on a massive logburner (loads of free wood here) so we should be just about comfortable next winter .

Sorry to hear this, hope he's better soon. A bowl of boiling water in the room or a bowl of water near the heater to moisten the air is sometimes helpful.

I only realised that our house isn't quite as cold as I thought it was when I left it this morning - brrrrrrrr.
NZers are WEIRD about house heating. No central heating, no double glazing, no insulation.

DS seems ok but won't sleep and is soooooo tired.

Am desperately trying to convince dp to emigrate.

Have dual nz/gb nationality.

Are you a national or have you emigrated there?

am in Christchurch. parents are NZers and I am dual nationality, but was born and brought up in England - moved here last Sept with british DH.

don't think DS is any worse, although when he's awake the breathing is awful again - he's very sleepy this afternoon/evening - not sure if that's good or not now! at least he gets a rest. And got a really good feed into him at about 3pm which should help.

ah 20p - have been out a bit today (in car/wandering around the shops so that he stayed asleep for a decent amount of time!)

he has the doctors again tomorrow morning but - fingers crossed - I think he is on the mend.

Poor you MrsJC and MasterJC.

DD has had this for the past two week - a bit more serious than you, but I so know how you feel.

I echo what the others have said - if you feel at all worried. Get him to the docs.

Diva - we have also bought an apnoea monitor.

Hope that little MrCusack feels much, much better soon.

have been reading about Carys and didn't want to come on the support thread as DS is nowhere near as ill as Carys or the other babies on there (and he's also quite a lot bigger - he's 15 weeks today but weighs a good 16 pounds or so )...anyhow am taking him to the docs again this morning, but I think he is much improved overnight and I'm feeling much less anxious

really, really hope that Carys improves and you get away from the hospital - will keep up to date with your news x
