Hi. Can I ask anyone who takes prednisilone what side effects they had/have.

I’ve just started them and am soooooo tired and feel like I’ve been hit by a truck! Is this normal?

Ooo and while I remember I’ve got diarrhoea! Is this a side effect as well?

Thank you

For which illness have you been prescribed Prednisolone and how high is your dosage.?

Inkoops · 19/08/2018 18:32

Hi digerd. Prescribed for inflammatory arthritis - until I can get to see a rheumatologist. 15mg daily for 2 weeks, then 10mg for another two weeks and then 5mg for a final two weeks.

I used it for asthma and couldn't sleep at all despite feeling exhausted. I found out that was a known side effect.

AornisHades · 19/08/2018 18:39

I had 30g and it made my anxiety worse. I don't think I was tired.

icansinga · 19/08/2018 18:40

I was really wired when taking it.
And when I stopped each time (after a short course for asthma) I felt really really sick. Like withdrawal symptom maybe.

Singlenotsingle · 19/08/2018 18:40

I'm taking prednisolone for polymialgia. Main side effect is that it makes you hungry and you put on weight. It didn't affect me sleeping at night, but I did nap in the afternoon, although I don't know if that's because of the condition or the cure!

You might not be on a high dose long enough for a weight gain. (Must try harder!)

endofthelinefinally · 19/08/2018 18:46

Massive weight gain - 3 stone in a year.
Bloating, heartburn, reflux.
Water retention - especially in the heat.
Severe osteoporosis and multiple fractures.
Thinning of the skin and bruising easily.
It is grim.

Ekphrasis · 19/08/2018 19:13

Wired and then kept having to lie on the floor, literally. Sorted out my asthma though.

This doesn’t sound good. Hoping the six weeks course I have will be the first and last!

💐 for everyone

I took a very high dose (500mg/day) for 5 days for a severe ms attack. Though the course was short it was very strong so I got a bloated pink face by the last days. Happily the side efffects vanished straight away when I finished it so take heart that the 6 weeks is temporary (and you aren't on a hideous dosage)

My father has been on a regime like you've described for several weeks and so far has no noticeable issues.

Silvercatowner · 20/08/2018 06:16

I take Prednisolone. I haven't had any side effects thank goodness. I don't think the dosage and reduction schedule you have been given will have many side effects - you aren't taking them for long enough.

TheChippendenSpook · 20/08/2018 06:28

I've had very short courses for asthma and have had side effects. They affect people differently.

Placebogirl · 20/08/2018 06:33

I didn't have a good time with it. I am happy for you to PM me but I don't want to bombard you with my horror story.

BusterGonad · 20/08/2018 07:22

I was in it for 3 months, made me ratty as hell and out in weight which I never lost! Works well though so that's a bonus.

Rebecca36 · 20/08/2018 07:31

I was on it many years ago for about six weeks. It didn't help me but I felt no worse while on it. No weight gain that I noticed. However when I came off it, a while later, I had some very weird and unpleasant symptoms which I was told was normal after coming off steroids. It passed but I would be reluctant to take steroids again.

Ekphrasis · 20/08/2018 08:09

I can't remember how much but think I was on more than your dose.

Hope it helps op.

Fluffypie1 · 20/08/2018 21:13

60ml a day for 6 months.Hunger ,moon face ,glaucoma .mood swings just to name a few

wwwwwwwwwwwwww · 20/08/2018 23:05

I was in a colossal dose and turned crazy! I mean I felt like I had no control of my emotions. On a more normal dose it was not as bad. My body always breaks out in a rash.

wwwwwwwwwwwwww · 20/08/2018 23:06

Oh and weight gain and swelling.

Filzma · 20/08/2018 23:11

I take hydrocortisone which is very similar (steroid). Long term. Exhaustion, hunger, joint pain, weight gain, water retention, thin skin and a couple I forget. One of the few things I wish I could get off but been taking it so long thinking I have secondary adrenal failure right now.

LemonysSnicket · 20/08/2018 23:23

I took 20mg each day for 10 days and they didn't do anything (by which I mean they also didn't affect my eczema either which they were prescribed for) when upped to 40, ditto no effect on my eczema or any other side effect :/

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/08/2018 23:29

I lose weight on it. Get hot flushes but feel great.

AornisHades · 20/08/2018 23:33

I've just remembered another effect. I was addicted to Doritos. Couldn't stop eating them. Addiction stopped with my last dose. Confused

Roxers · 20/08/2018 23:36

I got VERY angry VERY quickly and would behave completely unreasonably for 30 mins and then feed awful after ("roid rage," apparently).

But the worst thing was a very rapid increase in weight, from 9.5 to 12.5 stones, I was constantly hungry. Years later (and MANY diets/healthy eating plans etc etc), absolutely nothing has shifted it.

Sad
Davros · 21/08/2018 17:01

I've been taking it for over 20 years. Main side effect was very quick weight gain and hunger.
