URGENT DD HAS 2 TICKS STUCK ON HER.. HOW DO I GET RID OF THEM

Thats it really, we went for a walk today and a lady we passed walking her dog warned us about them, DD has 2 of them stuck on her legs, what do i do. I pulled one off before i realised what they were but not sure what to do. she is ready for bed Help

there was a thread last week about this.
Cover the ticks with alcohol/aftershave then do a quarter turn to remove them but if in doubt take her to out of hours doc.
Once they're out, keep an eye on them to make sure they haven't given DD Lymes Disease (see map of UK showing where they are eg - Scotland/Thetford Forest etc). The area would be red I think and she would have flu symptoms I think.

yes- covering them with alcohol suffocates them and then let go with their teeth and that's when you need to turn them and pull them out (if you pull straight out, they can leave their heads in)

you'll not want to do this but it's a sure wat to get them out - light match, blow out and immediately press against tic then tug quickly!

Safest way with kids is smear them with vaseline, they suffocate and let go. But read up on symptoms of lymes disease first. Hang on I'll find the links...

Do not put anything on them - it might make them spew stuff out into the wound (sorry). Get some tweezers, take a deep breath and just pull them straight off. Chances are you will have removed them early enough to avoid Lyme's transmission, but do watch out over the next days and weeks for a spreading, ring-like redness around the places where they were. That is an early symptom of Lyme's and the earlier it is caught the easier it is to treat. HTH.

Yes - posters where we lived in Germany said don't use Vaseline (can't remember why though).
We took DD to doc at A & E and he doused her head with aftershave he asked us to bring.

Twist them while removing then get down the vets (seriously!) for a tick remover for next time.

Just to mention - worm and tick treatments are not suitable to be used near pregnant women so are pretty potent!

The reason you don't use vaseline or matches apparently is that if you kill them, before they die they inject their horrid gunge into your child and then they CAN get any diseases they are carrying. URRRGGH.

Having had them on my cats, I can tell you that they don't like Hai Karate very much (mind you who does? )

A friend got Lyme's disease in the US but it was caught very early. Her doctor said that you should take the ticks in and then they can test them for Lyme's.

oh lordy, another thing I didn't know i needed to worry about. After that bed bug thread the other weeek, I was really worried about staying inn a hotel this week . dh is now laughing at me fr reading up about ticks in case I ever need to deal with them...

Filthymindedvixen - the worst bit is they inject anaesthetic so you don't feel them bite you and they prefer groins
