Yeah - BKBK - how exactly did this happen. Just so we can wind up filthymindedvixen at a later date when she posts she's been skipping through meadows thinking about unicorns?

a friends dd caught lymes disease but they never saw a tick on her, she end up with suspecte bells palsay (sp?) and from that found out it was Lymes. Please keep a careful look out for symptoms, perhaps gp can get her tested as a precaution????

You're not safe anywhere from the little critters. Ds2 (1) got one last year while watching gorillas at the zoo. It got flicked out of the cage and landed on his lower eyelid, 2mm from his eye (dread to think what would have happened if it had landed IN his eye). Because it was so close to his eye all we could use to kill it was vasoline; other options A&E would have advised were alcohol or nail polish remover. The worse bit was that it didn't die quickly and we saw it treble in size overnight sucking on my little baby's blood. In the morning it was dead and GP removed it quite easily.

no really this is AWFUL. I am a true nature's child, I hug trees and dance through hayfields and bonk in wooded glades and things. And the worst i ever worried about was the odd poke from a pine needle. And now I'm terrified

Anyone know where I can get one of these?

Thankyou for all the replies and sorry I didnt get beck on here last night. I phoned my dad to see what to do as I just thought he might know more about this than I do and he sounded quite concerned and said to ring NHS Direct which worried me because dad is usually 'Oh dont worry it'll be right' type of bloke.

The ting was that by the time I got any replies here DH decided to use tweezers to remove the ticks

The Nurse who spoke to us said that the ticks had to be in place for 24 hours for Lymes desease to be a risk so that we had done the right thing in that respect in taking them off but that there was still a risk of infection as there would be with any bite and just to be aware of symtoms, swelling, redness, temp etc.

By the time the nurse spoke to us DD and DS2 were in bed so we were advised to get them up and check them over to make sure thwere were no more that we had missed, which I did.

DS1 had one on his ankle, DS2 hant got any, DD had 4 all round the groin area and DHhad 2 on his ankle. I hadnt got any but this has been awful.

We had been walking in the forest about 7 miles from home. Its very popular with walkers and mountain bikers and I have to say we will not be going there again.

I am now thinking that I will take the children to the Drs tomorrow just to see whar he says, I think its just a case of wait and see but I am still worried especially about DD because she had 4 of the little suckers.

Thanks for all listening to me waffle on, and thanks for all the advice

Just goes to show you really don't feel them bite!

Glad they are all okay and that you seem to have got over the shock.

Long trousers tucked into socks next time?

gosh that's really horrible. If that happened to my family I wouldn't want to over go to the countryside again.

Tazking them to the doctors is a good idea. I wonder if they can give prophylactic treatment?

bkbk - I'm sure the nurse is right about Lyme disease and 24 hours, but I would go and check with your GP after the weekend - it is SO nasty, and so easy to prevent. I had a tick bite that showed up the 'target' sign of Lyme disease, and they just gave me a long course of antibiotics.

Haven't read the whole thread but would definitely take then to the GPs tomorrow. Lymes Disease is a real risk and I am not sure that the thing you were told about them having to be biting for 24 hours to infect you is true tbh.
The symptoms can come out weeks and months later-there are some good sites all about Lymes if you do a search by the way-I did last year when we found some ticks on our dog after our holiday!

It does take some hours for Lyme's to be transmitted - I'm not sure it's as many as 24, but it is a good few. This is as long as the tic is not 'attacked' (e.g. with Vaseline or other substances before being removed. Also, by no means all tics carry Lyme's. On balance you're more likely to escape it than not, but still be alert for symptoms.
