Have totally lost the other thread so if everyone would like to say hello here, old and new....encourage the newbies to stop and the old ones to rant about how it will get easier

Nearly 2 years since i stopped and i still find myself wanting one.
I didn't realise i would still crave them.

Posey · 03/05/2007 21:59

Almost 2 years for me too, but in contrast I never crave them. And I count my blessings. I think I was unsuccessful in previous attempts because I have no willpower to resist temptation and the temptation was so strong. This final time, I'd sorted out the psychological addiction (thank you Allen Carr) making quitting, quite seriously, a piece of cake!

I would recommend Allen Carr's books to anyone (I read 4 different versions before the brainwashing had been removed)

charliecat · 03/05/2007 22:00

Really? When? Occasionally, everyone else is sitting out in the sun and you remeber the one nice3 fag of the month, or wake up thinking Oh god another day without cigarettes I have to endure?

charliecat · 03/05/2007 22:01

I had an Allen Carr video. I could have said it backwards by the time it eventually dawned on me I couldnt have Just One without having anohter 367 afterwards too

I also used them to help supress my appetite.

charliecat · 03/05/2007 22:04

Poor you Harman. It's horrible when you slip up. I must have failed to stop at least 15 times before I finally made it stick.

I do think that smoking can be quite an emotional addiction - ie, smoking can help to suppress strong emotions, or help you to (not) deal with them. It's one of the things that makes it so hard to stop.

charliecat · 03/05/2007 22:11

I am going to bed now, will catch up tommorow folks.

If I can try a little tough love... don't give yourself the excuse of 'oh, I'm pathetic' (cos if you're really pathetic, then you might as well stop trying to stop, and you'll be off the hook, IYSWIM). Stopping smoking is really hard, as you obviously know. Like millions of other people, you have failed in this attempt. All you can usefully do is try to prepare yourself mentally for the next attempt.

Do you really want to stop, or do you just think that you ought?

In my experience, it can be worth waiting until you are really ready to stop. It's hard when you've just started again, because every fag tastes great (or it does for a few seconds, anyway) and you've been deprived of them for a while, so it feels like you're treating yourself. Carry right on smoking - but don't sneak into corners, and force yourself to own up to people who think you've stopped (otherwise it becomes an illicit treat, and that's really hard to give up). Let your kids moan at you about it, if they're old enough. Wait until you start to feel weary of it again, and you find yourself smoking fags that you neither want nor need, and that seem to taste horrible.

(Sorry if this is all quite bossy! I only managed to stop in the end through horrendous pregnancy sickness, so I'm in no position to lecture anyone.)

charliecat · 04/05/2007 13:58

Id like to say that I went through 2 years of stopping starting and I knew that 1 of these damn times it would be the last one.
This was it. 2.5 years ago now

I stopped smoking more than 3.5 years ago, and I'm back on the nicotine lozenges. I would like to stop eating them - Polos do much the same thing. I guess it's better than smoking though..? Yes, of course it is!

charliecat · 06/05/2007 09:13

How on earth did you end up back on the lozengers??????? See if you can wean yourself off with polos in between!

Hello
i would really like to give up.
Gave up when trying for ds1 about 5 years ago and used the nicorette inhaler for about a week or so and it was ok really.
started again last year and at the stage of smoking when i dont even really want one now.
I hate it and its giving me wrinkles now ! as well as all the other horrid stuff.
Anyone up for giving up Tue morning after the bank hol ?

charliecat · 07/05/2007 10:25

Whos joining fakeblond on her mission then? Would recommend some reading at whyquit.com and come to mumsnet to rant instead of sloping off to the shop Good Luck!

Stick the kids on a computer and get it on. It helps, it reprogrammes the way you think about fags.
After watching ti i never sat in an armchair chuffing away without thinking feck me I need to stop and EVENTUALLY you cant smoke anymore.
