Tissue sloughing in mouth

I've only come across the official term for what's happening in my mouth on google, so I hope it's correct! Basically at the bottom of the mouth, on both sides, my mouth has lots of peely skin that I fuss at with my tongue. It's been like this for a few mths. It's not painful in any way - it's much like when you've burned your mouth but without the sore bit. As it's not uncomfortable/red etc I haven't really thought about it much. But should I get it checked out? What could be causing it?

In my experience this happens when the skin inside your mouth reacts to one of the chemicals in your toothpaste. It happens to me really badly if I use Colgate but not if I use a certain version of Aquafresh. It happens to DS with all normal toothpastes so he has to use an incredibly expensive version of Sensodyne.
Try switching brands. I hate that feeling.

Same here if I use any toothpaste with 'stannous fluoride' in it - for example Oral B - I can literally pull strings of skin out of my mouth. Horrendous.

I haven't changed brands recently tho? I'm a bit stuck with changing as I have to use sensodyne as have incredibly sensitive teeth as have bad gum recession so not sure what I could change to. It's strange isn't it, could I get it without having changed?

I'll look for that ingredient on it when I get upstairs. There must be other sensitive paste brands to try

Yes I think you can develop a sensitivity over time, Colgate Total works for me.

OP they may have changed the chemical mix in the toothpaste without you noticing. But sounds like it's different for everyone. Colgate is the worst for me, but Fast is fine with it. I'm fine with Aquafresh but DS isn't.

Holland and Barrett do a fluoride free toothpaste, Kingfisher is the make, I find it nice and mild, it has a fennel flavour.

If you want to use fluoride free toothpaste, you may as well use nothing. Just saying...

I had this a couple of years ago. Saw two dentists and they couldn't find anything wrong. Can't remember changing toothpaste brands but it's possible. It cleared up on its own after about 6-9 months. (Or I might have changed brands again I guess...)

Do you eat a healthy diet, OP? I'm sure you probably do, and the toothpaste theory sounds likely, but your description just reminded me of descriptions of people with scurvey!

I get this if I use a whitening toothpaste. I find the usual cheap cavities control white Colgate works for me. Also used to be v sensitive. Also receeding gums but no stringiness with this one!

This happens to me if I eat strawberries or fresh pineapple. I assume it's some kind of allergy. Most years I forget when the new crop of strawberries comes into shops

Dd gets this, she says her mouth feels dry. I googled and google suggested chewing gum more which seems to help, there's also some mouth gel you can buy but I haven't yet. But with Dd it seems to be a dry mouth that's the cause.

Sleight a friend of mine who has the same problem uses the Kingfisher toothpaste too. She says it works when everything else has failed.

This happens to me, i am allergic to something in some toothpastes, it happens as soon as i clean my teeth with certain makes, it comes off in one large section within a few hours, its a pain as as soon as i find one that is ok they change the formula!

It is an allergic reaction. As others said commonly to toothpaste. I can't use whitening toothpastes otherwise this sloughing happens constantly. It is annoying and a bit gross!!

Maybe sensodyne have reformulated their toothpaste - using cheaper ingredients maybe?

Change of mouthwash? Eating lots of fuzzy sweets? (Understand most adults don't this this as I do!)

It wouldn't hurt to visit the dentist and get them to check your oral health. Sometimes the body can get stuck in a reactive cycle even when the stimulus is removed. I damaged the palm of my hand with very harsh cleaning fluid once. It shed skin for years. Steroid cream stopped it but once stopped the shedding would start again.

I can use all toothpastes so long as they don't have whitening additives in them.

It may be due to the SLS in the toothpaste - it's the ingredient that makes the toothpaste foam.

It's also the same ingredient that makes shampoo, shower gel and washing up liquid foam - which kind of puts you off putting it in your mouth. It is notorious for causing ezcema and dry skin so not surprising it would irritate the inside too.

You can get dry mouth toothpastes like Biotene that don't contain it - most pharmacies will sell them.

I would get it checked out by your dentist and try swapping toothpaste.

Worth going to the dentist. There's a benign condition called lichen planus that can cause this. The ingredient in toothpaste that often causes problems is sodium lauryl sulphate. There are lots of SLS free brands.

@SleightOfHand yeah thanks. Actually did a fair bit of that whilst I was doing my degree in dentistry and the odd catch up since in over a decade of practice. I'll bear your expertise in mind tho.

OP I agree with others, you may want to try some SLS free toothpastes, sensodybe definitely do them. Your dentist can also prescribe one which is SLS free and good for sensitivity.

That's interesting re the SLS as I get terrible dry skin from liquid hand washes and shower gel so it would make sense. The only problem with getting the dentist to look at it is the chance of getting an appt are slim! I have one pre booked for numbing pre hygienist in august so could ask then? In the meantime I'll look for sls free toothpaste and see if that helps.
I don't eat sweets or much fruit really. My teeth are not great so I try to avoid sugar where possible

I get this when I use listerine if that helps you narrow it down OP?

I don't use mouthwash either. Can't stand it!
