Thickened womb lining

I have been told i have thickening of the womb lining and referred to hospital on a 2 week wait. I'm really worried it may be cancerous

Has anyone had this and what was your outcome.

Have you symptoms that meant you were being investigated? Have they said what else it could be? I dont know much about it but am thinking there are probably a few reasons why you might get this?

Yes i had spotting between my periods twice last year (October and November) went to the doctor in December and was sent for an ultrasound scan. January's period was nearly 3 weeks late (and very long) and pretty wacky with heavy spotting between January and February but since then and my march period everything's been as it normally was.

The sonographer said the lining was a bit thick and the doctor said she would refer me

Me. It's a common diagnosis. I had a hysteroscopy - couldn't see anything worrying. Just waiting for the results of the biopsy to come back but I'm not massively worried.

Thanks minifingerz. I didn't realise it was common.
I have an appointment on Monday and not really sure what they will do. I have the leaflet about all the tests they could do but I'm one of those people who like it spelt out

Me too. Was having investigations for heavy periods. All tests came back negative. I was told that the thickening was probably due to my age!

Me too! My womb lining is 19mm, recently had hysteroscopy (everything looked fine) and biopsy which showed simple hyperplasia. The nurse who did the procedure was very reassuring and thought it was most likely just my age (45) and I'm heading for menopause. Unfortunately DM and GM both had endometrial cancer so I've to have follow up scans and biopsies just as a precaution. I found the biopsy a bit painful (but only for a few seconds). Please try not to worry - and don't scare yourself with Dr Google.

That's the problem summer, Google has me dead and buried before the weeks out.

I'm 46 so hopefully they'll say it's my age too. I have no history of female cancers in the family only my GF with stomach cancer

I've had this too - I was mid-forties at the time- I had a hysteroscopy with biopsy, all results were fine.

Awe, I totally understand - I was / am the same. Every forum I came across seemed to have women with my symptoms and it was all bad news. But you have to remember that it's often only the tiny proportion of people who have a story to tell that take the time to post, the vast majority that get good news just go on their merry way.

Best of luck - fingers crossed you're just having a wild fluctuation of hormones like me!

I had a thickening picked up as incidental finding on MRI for something else. I am taking Tamoxifen so high risk of endometrial cancer and got a referral for hysteroscopy and biopsy. Not most pleasant procedure but not awful and over quickly. The consultant gynaecologist was lovely. Once she'd had a look she said I didn't need a biopsy as thickened patch was tiny and not causing problems. In her opinion it wasn't cancerous just a slightly calcified fibroid.
No further follow up or treatment needed.

Look up adenomyosis - result can be a thickened womb lining and dodgy menstrual cycle. I have been told I have this by a sonographer but when I went to hospital I was told it wasn't abnormal enough to make a definitive diagnosis.

I have been told today that I have thickening of the womb and I’m only 20 I have been given some tablets to try and help control the bleeding and stop the thickening but if they don’t help i have to go back I’m really worried as everything I have read is mostly women having this at a later age does anyone have any advice as I have been reading a lot and got my self really worked up.

Hi Sorry to resurrect this thread. I've been told after a scan that I have an abnormally thick uterine lining and have been referred to a gynaecologist. I've been suffering from heavy bleeding, clotting and painful periods. I'm in my mid-40s. I'm really worried. Any advise would be much appreciated

Hi had a ultrasound of my liver yesterday and then a internal scan of my pelvis, got call from GP today saying that my endometrium is very thick and I need to see specialist very soon, only symptoms are pain and vaginal dischargevas have just been through menapause, should I be worried.????

Hello @Wendy, although it can be a shock it's not necessarily anything to be worried about. I had a similar issue a few years ago and was concerned as symptoms had been identical to yours but nothing more. In my case I had a hysterectomy - painful afterwards and needed help recovering, obviously, but afterwards got the all clear and have had no problems since! So don't panic just yet! Go and see the specialist and take each step one at a time

Hi , I’ve been having heavy bleeding with slight tummy ache since 30th dec , been put on tranexemic acid they helped for about 4 days then it started again so have been put on norethisterone ..again they worked but am now having spotting again after 6days of no bleeding ! My ultrasound shows thickened lining and have been recommended to the gynaecologist specialist ! Been waiting for an appointment for just over a week and I’m going crazy with worry :( I’m 42 and have 3 children , how do people cope with the waiting without going insane googling all the symptoms ???

Hi has this happened to anyone . I am 51 years old no periods for three years . I started to bleed heavily for four days . Seen Doc got referred to hospital . Had scan said ovaries healthy cervix healthy bit womb lining 6 mm instead of 4 . I have been referred for Hysteroscopy and biopsy I am very worried if I’m honest . Also had pain on Intercourse thought that was part of menopause .anyone shed any light on this thanks

Hi I have just went for a pelvic scan with the same symptoms as you near enough and I have also to go see a gynaecologist now the doctor said they found a thickness in a area in the womb I just wanted to ask did they get to the bottom of it I also have two kids and am very worried 😧 ,

Hi I’m really sorry to hear you are going through this as well . I get the womb examination done on Tuesday under ga and biopsy . Not sure if they will let me no anything on the day and have to wait 4 to 5 days for biopsy results . I am nervous but trying to stay as positive as I can because Doc told me in 90 percent of cases all is ok . I hope I will be my thoughts and prayers are with you .

Lucia51... I am 50 and had same as you just over a year ago, I was 6mm thick and was told the cut if point was 4. I had a biopsy done under GA and a few hours later a doctor came to my bedside and said everything looked normal. I was then discharged and had a appointment for about 6 weeks later where I was told biopsy taken was indeed normal and the thickness was put down to my age.
They did want to insert a coil whilst I was under GA because of the bleeding but I refused. The bleeding had lessened so much by then and wasn't a problem as periods had stopped apart from the odd spotting now and then.
Don't worry it seems it's quite common.

Thanks for replying and thanks for your prayers, I know how you must be feeling it’s scary but at least now we can get answers and I have seen from other comments that all’s worked out well and I did have a look on google 🤦🏼‍♀️ And most of the time thickening in the womb all points to going through the menopause so iam also praying for a good outcome for us all 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I hope all has went well🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 , I have two kids also and iam in the same situation as you, I also have a area of thickness ,i am waiting on a hospital appointment and trying to stay calm 😱🤦🏼‍♀️ I have no clue what they will do either once I go to the hospital as it was a quick call from the doctor and I panicked a bit and forgot to ask any questions, hoping as good for all us woman on this thread ❤️

Thanks everyone for your stories . I had the hysterectomy done yesterday under GA and biopsy . Consultant came round and said everything look fine inside no masses of cells no growths just some blood to scrape of the womb lining prob due to my recent bleeding . So all outside womb is ok but obviously the womb lining has to to tested with a biopsy for the thickness . I will know next Tuesday have an appointment with him then . I am trying to stay positive he said if it was something sinister my womb is very small so it would just be an operation to remove it . Thinking of you all lucia .
