Tranexamic Acid prescription

I have been prescribed Tranexamic acid for very heavy periods. I finally went to the doctor after years of this as they are getting worse with regular flooding and pain. I have been given tablets today and am due on over weekend. No one I know has had them in RL wondered if anyone could share experience on here? Reading leaflet but nervous but desperate to do something to improve it. Thank you in advance

Love them. Makes big difference. Take a day or so b4 due, and for next couple of days. If I forget I quickly get reminded why I need to take them. No side effects for me. Good luck

Brilliant. No side effects for me. Took them for a few years until menopause. Seemed the least extreme of the options on offer.

I'm wondering about mentioning this to dd.

I've only been taking it for 3 cycles and it's a wonder drug for me.

No side effects. MASSIVELY reduced blood loss. I can actually go about my life as normal when on my period now - no living like a hermit for 3-5 days a month. I haven't soaked through anything much less woken to a bloodbath.

Am glad the symptoms are being treated but its certainly in your interests to find out why this is happening as well.

Your GP should also refer you to a gynaecologist to determine exactly why you are flooding and having pain. Fibroids for instance can cause such heavy bleeding to arise.

Thanks for all the replies. It has become really bad and I can't face it anymore. I've had lots of swabs and exams too to see what it is.

I loved tranexamic! My gp gave then when I first started on the arm implant and kept bleeding for weeks on end. Virtually stopped my periods each time, was amazing. I just took one or two each time the bleeding was too long, they lasted ages. But then I saw a different gp who won't give me them as she said you're only supposed to have one "medication" and you can't use tranexamic with the implant...so stuck with lots of bleeding again.

But they were great for me and I'd use them again in a heartbeat!

Hi looking for some more advice as I've taken them and amazing reduction in bleeding to point period seemed to have stopped on day 3 so didn't take any tablets. Today, day 4, still nothing and then suddenly this afternoon lots of cramps and bleeding again. Is this normal? I'm confused. Love the fact it is manageable now but equally does it mean my period will last for ages?!

I too have been prescribed TA recently. For the past few months This has been the pattern - a couple of days of spotting followed by then very heavy bursts of bright and clotty bleeding causing flooding (it feels horrible, like I am peeing myself) lasting up to 2.5 weeks last time. Cycles are roughly 42-49 days and they used to be between 29-35 and bleeds lasting 5-6 days which was a breeze compared to this

I have had blood tests (all fine) and an ultrasound and no cysts/polyps/fibroids were detected but I've opted for a hysteroscopy just to be thorough.

Now that I am on day 4 of light bleeding I'm wondering whether I should start taking the TA or wait til the bleeding gets heavier. My worry is that if i take it for the 4 days from today, the bleeding will stop temporarily, but then restart again after a couple of days? I was prescribed mefanemic acid too but I haven't been taking that because I don't really suffer with cramps/pp.

Did you restart taking the TA? How are you finding it?

Hi I'm still on it but take it for the four days now from day I start bleeding, three times a day and it is still heavy but nothing like it was. I do find that it sorts of starts up again the day after the day I stop taking them but it is only light for a day.

I always use it from when it gets heavy and its massively reduced my blood loss. I love it. I was told by a gynae I could use 3x a day for 5 days but often GP's say 3 days only

One month I had nothing but headaches so I stopped it early after 2 days but this didn't happen again last month

If you take them too early on - so it's not very heavy - then I find that is when it can go a bit wonky with bleeding afterwards. You kind of do need to wait for the heavy bit to kick in before starting them.
They will make you lose clots instead of free running blood which is a bit weird

Pookie I've noticed a headache on the first day of taking them too. Yes agree much more clot like. I've had no flooding or that gushing feeling when I stand up since started taking them

I found the first 2 doses took a while to kick in, so by the time I was home things were easing but not while I was at work.

They work.
But take them 1/2 days before and sometimes your period may be slightly longer than usual but lighter.
You can buy them at Boots without going to the doctor as well, they sell their own brand.

I wasn't sure if the TA was causing headache but stopping helped! I was upset that I might be reacting badly but the next time I didn't. I ought to only have one more period before an ablation.... fingers crossed!

I found them brilliant, but there was something about taking them that made me uncomfortable (regular doses of drugs, just didn't sit right). An acupuncturist taught me to use moxa sticks (large crayon shaped rod of compressed died herbs) that I burn and use to heat an acupuncture point on my toe. Sounds a bit whacky, but have the same effect as the TA (or my abnormally heavy periods slow down and stop - miracle!)
I'd definitely try acupuncturist/ traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.

Had them years ago, they were pretty effective. Don't need them so much now

I took mine to early this month, bled for and extra couple of days. As pp's have said, take when it's heavy and it has the optimum results. They are an abosulute god send.

Does anyone else find it upsets your stomach?

My period upsets my stomach badly anyway
