Nits!!!

Please in need of some help. My dd has lice/nits! She's not even 2 but goes to nursery and they seem to be constantly informing us of an outbreak! This is now the third time in 2 months that she's had them and she's itching like crazy! I seem to get them every time by daddy always manages to avoid! I'm spending a fortune on lotion (lyclear) but as a first time mum I feel like I'm doing something wrong! Please help, I don't want to be one of "those mums" who doesnt sort it properly

I found headrin really good on ds. He has the whole trendy do going on so its quire long on top. It doesnt smell bad and done in 10 mins

I have thought about trying something different. Do I need to comb through her hair wet every day for 2 weeks like I've been reading because I didn't know I had to do that

vamoose is much better than all the others I found. And I had a son with long curly thick hair! You do need to comb through for a few days after to get any loose eggs out I think.

I used hedrin on dd's long thick hair. Then hours of combing. Each day after I slathered her hair in very cheap conditioner and then combed it through. After a week I used hedrin again. Then another week of daily combing with cheap conditioner. Didn't find anything after the third day but wanted to be sure!

Is there anything else I have to do? I will pop to the chemist in the morning to get some Hedrin and make sure I comb her hair daily. I feel like a bad mum at the moment because she keeps getting them and I'm blaming myself!

Any advice on checking your own hair. I have long thick hair and struggle to brush it at the best of times without trying to get a little comb through it. In fact I would say it's impossible to comb my hair!

Use conditioner when combing through. It helps loosen the eggs and slows the lice down. Tea tree oil ( I add drops to water in a spray) is meant to help although doesn't completely stop them. Get a good headlice comb ( I have a nitty gritty and you can get them on prescription) comb through every few days in bright light.

Cheap conditioner and a nitty gritty comb. Slather the conditioner onto dry hair and then comb out, wiping the comb on kitchen towel in between. Repeat every couple of days as well as using Hedrin. I also then use nitty-gritty preventer spray from Amazon. Hope that helps

If she's had them 3 times in 2 months then you probably didn't quite get rid of them each time - I wouldn't consider mine 'clear' until no sign of them 2 weeks on from first seeing them. Nitty gritty and loads of conditioner. They sit on the floor and put s film on. I sit in the sofa and get combing. Every night for about 3 nights and then every couple of days. No I haven't got the time either....

Oh yes, I always do everyone in the house (or we do each other )

Yes, conditioner and comb, comb, comb, in sections. Obsessively.

Do you use hedrin or chemical stuff on everyone's too?

My hair is a pain in a the arse to comb too. I make sure I brush it really thoroughly then wet in shower and put in loads of conditioner and then comb, comb, comb. I dunk the comb in boiling water and wipe.on kitchen towel in between each pass. They go eventually. I spray my dd's hair with a tea tree and eucalyptus spray each morning before styling in plaits to make it a less tempting prospect for the nits in the first place

I did the first night. But I only found 2 on dd and none on anyone else so I just used the hedrin on her the second time, but lots of combing on everyone.

Is hedrin and 2 step process?

I've been looking at her hair so much for the last week and haven't seen anything until I washed her hair tonight and suddenly she's riddled!!!

Keep combing. What did you do when you found them tonight?

Does she have her hair tied up for nursery?

The Hedrin leave in lotion is the thing to buy. It's a bit expensive but worth it. Put it in, leave it dry or you can dry with hairdryer. Leave in overnight then wash out the next day, you can use shampoo. I find the Nitty Gritty comb doesn't pull the eggs off the hairs, you have to go through the whole head and pull them off with your fingernails. Also, if you go through the whole head in sections, when you go back to check again next time, you will know if there are new eggs as they will be in groups, on the hair very close to the scalp. If you find any live ones you need to treat the hair again.
I find the cheaper white plastic nit combs are better.
Sit at a window in good light, otherwise you won't see them that easy in artificial light. Then you need to do a second application of Hedrin about 3 days later. How did you get them out of your own hair? I end up doing the affected person's hair about 3 times over 2 weeks with Hedrin to get rid.

You can get Hedrin (the 8 hour version) on prescription for children. Otherwise it can get very expensive when they keep getting them! DD is 5 and with bum length hair gets then far too often even though she goes to school with it all braided up.

I don't bother with the treatments. A nitty gritty comb and conditioner works just as well. I spend hours sectioning up the hair and combing though. It works and is much cheaper than not treatments every time.

Gosh you just don't need expensive lotions. Just slather her hair in conditioner and go through with a comb. Do this every 3rd day for 2 weeks. And the every time you wash to check for them.

By comb I mean a headlice comb.

Ok so large bottle of cheap conditioner and a not comb! This all sounds so time consuming. It is so frustrating when we both work full time on alternate shifts and lucky if we get 20 minutes together a day

It doesn't take too long if she has daily baths. I did it at the end of the bath. After you've washed her hair get her to face the back of the bath, gunk her up and use a large toothed comb at first to get rid of the knots. Then the live comb. Just swish it out under the water between each combing. Then pull plug out and shower her off.
