Please in need of some help. My dd has lice/nits! She's not even 2 but goes to nursery and they seem to be constantly informing us of an outbreak! This is now the third time in 2 months that she's had them and she's itching like crazy! I seem to get them every time by daddy always manages to avoid! I'm spending a fortune on lotion (lyclear) but as a first time mum I feel like I'm doing something wrong! Please help, I don't want to be one of "those mums" who doesnt sort it properly BlushConfused

My dd who is 6 has had head lice almost constantly since last march and it's driving me mad. We use a nitty gritty comb and plenty of conditioner and comb every few days. I've tried every kind of lotion and none of them seem to work just regular combing it just takes so long to do.

We've been doing it for a couple of days now. Dd and partner are easy but mine takes forever and the nitty gritty comb rips half of my hair out 😩

mrscee have you tried the Hedrin leave in overnight lotion? If she's had nits since last March then the combing and conditioner isn't working either. Any comb I have won't pull the eggs off the hairs. The hairs are too fine. Does the conditioner kill the eggs too, or how does that work?

Many years ago when DS was about to start school I asked a pharmacist for advice as I couldn't bear the thought of him getting head lice. Her advice was to forget about the headlice lotions as they are becoming less effective as the headlice build up resistance. She said to just get a metal nit comb and regularly come through hair liberally covered with cheap conditioner. So I did this at every bath time.

I know it's more difficult with girls. But as the pharmacist said don't just do the combing when when you know your child has headlice. You should be doing it as a preventative measure and to nip in the bud the beginninings of any infestation.

Also for adults with very thick hair, try using a very fine toothed styling comb first instead of a nit comb.

They don't become resistant to Hedrin, because it doesn't work that way. It causes them to dehydrate by physical coating of the dimeticone solution, it works in a physical way, not by poisoning them in chemical way. I'd imagine the conditioner works too, but only if you religiously go through the hair every day and then examine each for eggs left behind. If you leave some behind, the head might seem nit free for about 7 days but then those eggs will have matured and started a new cycle.
