my throats closed up

I wakened up an hour ago unable to breathe and spent ten minutes retching and burst all the blood vessels in my eyes and round it ( I look dreadful)

I had a slightly sore throat yesterday but today I've wakened up to my uvula about ten times its size (I've no tonsils).

I can still just about swallow, have slightly stuffed up sinuses but I don't feel ill.

What can I do!! It was terrifying and I'm having to concentrate to breathe. I've gargled with salt water and eating a couple of strepsils

Is there anything I can take from the pharmacy that will make the swelling go down ? I'm not going to be able to go to bed tonight without it going down

Laurie love, I think you should get it checked.

A closed throat could be dangerous, just get it looked at asap.

See the gp today. There must be something that can reduce the swelling, I got very close to it with tonsillitis in my youth.

I did think this would be an allergy and suggested an epi-pen but I have no idea if that works on all swollen throats.

Oh god really! I have to go to the docs? I was really hoping you'd say it will go down of its own accord with some chloraseptic or something.

I feel so bad at taking up an appt with 'just' a swollen throat but honestly if it gets any more swollen I won't be able to breathe.

Really? What would make you think a gp appt is appropriate, if not for a throat so swollen you are struggling to breathe?!Confused gp/a and e if it gets any worse.

Gargling with soluble aspirin may help in the meantime, but def needs looking at asap.

This isn't just a swollen throat though. Is it? This is being unable to breathe and therefore completely justifies an emergency appointment.

Don't be silly. See a doctor asap.

You breath solely through that area therefore it needs to function or you will die!!

Get yourself to the doc. I had similar symptoms recently and it was only that I went to the doctor soon that kept me out of hospital.

Laurie, have you got any piriton/antihistamine? Can you safely take some? It should help reducing the inflamation. Get yourself seen asap.

Definitely go and be seen.

I had this and it wasn't just a simple throat infection. It was strep throat and I left it and it turned into sepsis which was awful.

I went to the surgery as I couldn't get through on the phone and the nice (but bossy, maybe she needs to be) said I wasn't going to get an emergency appt and the earliest one was 6.30 pm Hmm

So she sent me to the pharmacy and said to call later once I'd taken some otc medication. The pharmacist was really helpful and gave me sudafed, an anti inflammatory throat lozenge, a nasal decongestant, and chloraseptic.

So I've taken that lot and am giving myself 4 hours before calling the docs back to insist on that 6.30 appt.

I've had this a couple of times. Water trickling into my lungs when I drink. Very frightening. In my case, both times it was quinsy - a throat abcess. Sound medieval, doesn't it? Massive doses of antibiotics were the only cure. I have promised myself that if it starts again, I will throw myself at the medical profession and wait until I am seen. Please make sure you are seen.

I would ring back and insist on it. My mil had 'just a sore throat' until it got so bad she was rushed to hospital with 2 anaesthetists waiting for her. I'm not saying that will happen to you but if it does close up there won't be much you can do about it yourself.

Make a big deal, stamp your feet, whatever you have to do.

Or just call back and say the Otc med didn't help so you need the appt, like the receptionist suggested.

Don't see a need for foot stamping and kicking off here.
