Help - bad mummy alert, what shall I do

This morning DP was getting DS ready for nursery and went into the kitchen to get something - when he went back in DS (8.5 months) had mud round his mouth and something in his mouth, DP tried to get it out but it was too late (he said it looked like a piece of wood) DS gagged as it went down but then seemed ok.

I thought it would be fine as if it was small enought go down it should be ok (guiltily admitting here that I was in a big rush getting to work and didnt give it too much thought)

The nursery have just been on to say he has been quite upset today, woke up from his nap with his knees drawn up and seeming like he was in pain and had had a nasty nappy - no sign of the wood though.

Shall I get him checked out?

I'd pop him to the doctor if it were me I think, just to put my mind at rest. Hope he is better soon.

If he has been miserable today, I'd get him checked just in case. Hope he's OK.

Beccarollover - try not to feel bad - it can happen to any of us. Dh fished large piece of ds1's Thomas train out of ds2's mouth yesterday. I was busy gabbing on the phone and hadn't noticed.

My dd was eating a popped balloon the other day but I hadn't noticed until dh spotted it and loudly pointed it out to me.

You can't have eyes in the back of your head, don't feel bad, I am sure he will be fine.

What time are you at work till?

Could you phone the nursery again for an update to see how he is? Could just be a coincidence and he has a tummy bug or somehting.

My ds swallowed a 10pence piece nearly 2 years ago aged 5!! It got stuck in his throat (luckily on the way to his stomach). When it passed down to his stomach he was sick but then seemed okay. Had to go back a week later to make sure the coin had passed (xrayed him) eventually it took 8 days and I have kept it (after sterilising it) He frightened the life out of me and am now very paranoid about leaving him with anything smaller than a pet !

Oooh i'd take him to get it checked out. Him being sick could be completly unrelated but even so you won't rest until you know.

Don't worry too much - pop him along to the hosp later for an xray - this sort of thing happens to loads of people. Let us know how you get on {{{{{{{hugs{}}}}}}}}

Can you leave work early, or if not can dh or someone else collect from nursery and take him to be checked out?

DO NOT beat yourself up if you have to stay at work and someone else takes him either, I wouldn't be able to just up sticks sometimes either.

jsut feel awful that i sent him off to nursery without thinking even when i knew he had swallowed it now feel awful on work for haivng to leave

Isn't that our lot though, damned if you do etc. Please stop being hard on yourself, it will be fine. Have you spoken to dp?

cant get in touch with him - he works in a hospital and wasnt in the lab when I rang so could be anywhere!

i know i shouldnt be hard on myself - will stop!! think this has just compounded the daily guilt and hatred of leaving them at nursery!

That guilt means you care and are a good mum, so stop it! Must go or dh will shout at me, he is picking me up from work.

This doesnt make you a bad parent. I hate to think how many times we sent ds to nursey when we knew we shouldnt.

Becca, please don't feel bad. It's such a close call with nursery a lot of the time and making these choices does not make you a bad parent! (Well, all right, add me to the list with Hercules. I sent a baby in yesterday whose eardrum popped within 1 hour of her arrival...) and a friend whose parenting skills I admire enormously once sent her six year old to school with a broken wrist...
There are a lot of bugs around, he might very well have been sick ANYWAY. Let us know how you get on.

oh fuck fuckety fuck

i got him from nursery, he seems ok if a little whingey the nursery staff recommended i take him to get checked out which I will do - he seems fine and was giggling when i got him

on the way to the nursery i pulled in to my friends house as i was really upset, hadnt managed to speak to dp and wanted to ask what she thought i should do before i got him

dp rang while i was there and has just gone down my throat telling me off for going to my friends on the way - am i wrong here? i was there literally 30 seconds and he is implying i didnt care enough to go to the nursery straight away - i really cant believe him - i think he feels guilty for this morning and is lashing out on me (he has sent me a text saying i was f**king out of order)

totally bemused and emotional!!

Becca, really there are lots of vomiting bugs going round - I've had one, ds has had one and there have been a couple of MN threads about them. I bet he's got a bug and it is totally unrelated to whatever he put in his mouth this am. And yes, your dp's text is rude and uncalled for. I am sometimes glad I don't text and that dh doesn't have a mobile - people seem to text things they wouldn't say. I think he's feeling guilty and is taking it out of you. That's such a common thing to happen.
