Nasal polyps anyone?

DH has had what we thought was a sinus infection, but for a long time. Doctor just advices him to use sudofed but it hasn't helped. He's constantly blowing his nose, talks through his nose and one nostril is blocked. Last night he had a look up his nose with torch and to our horror there's some kind of growth there. He's going to the doctors tonight, but in the meantime I'm worried sick that it might not be polyps, especially after reading that polyps occur up both nostrils.
I wonder if it's possible that there are polyps up the other nostril but just can't be seen? I'd be so grateful for anyone who knows about polyps and can reassure me.

Thank you Goat, it's just that everything I read says if they're only up one nostril it could be serious. I'm hoping he's got some up the other, but can't be seen, itms. Then I'd be reassured it's more than likely polyps.

I had a large polyp that had prolapsed out of the sinus and was constantly blocking my nose. I could feel it move back and forward in my nose.
I was really fed up with it and one evening had a good blow of my nose in sheer frustration and it came out. It was pale and the same shape and size as a small uninflected balloon. The relief was immense, I had just made an Appointment with GP to see if they could do anything so I sealed it in a bag and took it along to confirm it was a polyp.
I don't think it is advisable to try this method of removal, I just got lucky and had a polyp that had a very weak attachment. And a good set of lungs!

That must have been a great relief Willdo, I wish this would happen for DH. He's going to the walk in center tomorrow.

May also be rhinitis, my DS was thought to have polyps by GP - ENT consultant diagnosed Rhinitis, his nose was fully blocked by inflamed nasal tissue.

I too managed to blow one out. When the ENT specialist looked up my nose - the two sides of my nose were graded differently - one side the polyse was almost visible, the other further back. So there could be asymmetry perhaps. I had mine removed surgically, but they can come back. Best to get an expert opinion.

Yes I have had them. First thing will probably be a steroid spray. I had to lie on the bed with my head over the edge looking at at the ceiling. Steroid drops in nose and stay in that position for 10mins. Morning and evening. This was to see if the polyps would shrink. Did this for 30 days. Meantime GP made ENT referral for the little camera up nose investigation.

Thank you, yes he has been pescribed a steroid spray, doctor said he could see what looked like a large polyp. He does struggle to use it correctly. I will pass on that tip of living on the bed.

I had them; think they came after an awful bout of sinusitis. Had steroid drops for 6 weeks - didn't do much. Had ent referral and drops continue yes for about a year until I saw the consultant who arranged a cat and diagnosed a deviated septum too. The polyps were worse on the side where the deviation was prominent. The ct showed completely blocked maxillary sinuses. I had extreme symptoms of allergy and horrendous pain until I had a fess, polypectomy and surgery to straighten my septum. It was like magic. This was nearly 2 years ago and I am symptom free, although I still use a daily steroid/antihistamine spray. The surgery wasn't half as traumatic as I expected.

OP - yes the steroid spray did work! Sorry I meant to add that to my message but forgot. By the time I had my ENT appt with the camera, although the consultant could see I had had the polyps, they had gone. I don't have a deviated septum (as other posters have mentioned) however so maybe that made a difference. I was dedicated to doing the steroid drops in nose/hanging over the end of the bed thing for 10 mins twice a day as desperate for something to work.

This was about 5/6 years ago and nothing since.

Dp had these, in only one nostril too. Steriods etc wouldn't work so after a long time (3 years) of being told he had a cold, he was allergic to something etc he was finally referred to ENT.
Had to have an op under general to remove, they then packed his sinus with gauze, removed this the next morning which he said was horrid but he can breathe again so was happy.

Docs advised it may return it may not, which is really un useful.

I tried first a steroid spray from the GP, then stronger steroid drops ( the upside down head type- they helped a lot) but still could not breath through one side of my nose, (and had regular sinusitis) so I had surgery to remove the polyps, sort out my deviated septum, drain my sinuses and reduce the turbinates to make some room. I still have to use mild steroid sprays (for life) and occasionally drops again but my general health has improved due to being able to breath and sleep better at last! It is wonderful to be able to breath through my nose!

@MrsPatrickDempsey I know this was a very long time ago but I’m also going through this. Feels like I have a sinus infection daily and I’ve managed to get fluid in my ears which will need a grommet I presume. I was wondering if you could tell me your symptoms? The ear symptoms are bothering me the most but I have a lot of facial pressure and I wake up daily with a stuffy nose, post nasal drip and a sore throat. It is all very draining!

Poor you - sounds horrendous and very similar to my symptoms. The cheek bone pain was probably the worst pain ever. I still get it when I have a headache. Just a feeling of my head being full of cement really.
Have you seen an ENT specialist?

Thanks for replying @MrsPatrickDempsey. I’m due to see a specialist in two weeks. Thank god it only took 6 weeks through the NHS. I have daily facial pain and ear ache as well as light ringing. Right ear has full blown fluid which I hear creaking like a timber which I cannot clear! Daily headaches and exactly what you said- the cement feeling. I also get a tingly nose,postnatal drip and even a tingly scalp. Did you have these symptoms too? I’ve tried nasal sprays, antihistamines and antibiotics. It’s like having a a bad cold- but every single day and my nose is refusing to run so I know things are blocked up!!

Good that your appointment has come round quickly.
I didn't have discharge from my ear but I was so blocked and congested I couldn't actually blow my nose or breathe out of it at all.
I waited about 6 months between seeing the ENT and having my surgery. I have non allergic rhinitis which I manage with strong steroid drops and occasionally, a short sharp rescue dose of oral steroids. Have no idea what the trigger is. Be sure to report back after the ENT appt.

Aw thank you. My dr thinks it’s rhinitis too and I’m just hoping for a miracle cure. I’ve always had a a sensitive nose but I think postpartum hormones have done something as this all began last summer after the both of my second child. The right ear bothers me as I feel like I’m not with it. I think it’s glue ear caused by a sinus infection I had last year 😭. Did you’re blocked ears Improve after the op? And yes I will report back hopefully!

@MrsPatrickDempsey so I saw the ENT today. Deviated septum causing a back long of congestion. CT scan in the next 6-8 weeks. Given a nasal spray (which I know will do naf all but willing to try)....he said ears feeling blocked is due to nasal congestion and the slight tinnitus

Good to have a diagnosis but a shame the ct scan is such a long wait. Did they give any idea of treatment options? What spray did they give?
I have had really bad sinus pain for the last couple of days. Toying with a shot of oral steroids. I think I will always be susceptible.

@MrsPatrickDempsey ah I hope you feel better. He prescribed mometasone furoate which I had last year...it actually gave me me awful headaches where I felt like I needed to vomit. Yeah it’s sad that the wait is 6-8weeks but for nhs I feel that’s really good. It’s actually a private hospital so I hope things will move abit faster even though I’m there through the nhs. My ears are hissing but he said they’re clear? They hurt and he said that’s due to nasal congestion and the sore throat? He told me to take gaviscon to heal the throat up even though I don’t get acid coming up. Just for two weeks. Does your doctor prescribe steroids easily? Mine hasn’t offered once - and I’m allergic to nsaids so I thought steroids would be offered next! How are you feeling now? Do you get mucus with your sinus headaches? I wake up with my nose tingling and stuffed with gluey mucus and ears blocked and itching

Not feeling too bad today but the headaches are worse than labour - seriously feel like I have been punched in the face. Postnatal drip with it and ibuprofen doesn't normally touch it.
I have a great gp who put prednisone on repeat for me on the understanding that it is only to be used to manage flare ups. I am due a review so haven't been getting it this year. I use daily betnesol drops which I found are the best.

@MrsPatrickDempsey hello, I’ve had the surgery a week ago from today. I went private in the end. I’m doing good. Doing the nasal rinses and all the drops they’ve prescribed. My ears are still cracking when I swallow. Eustachian tubes filled with congestion...Early days I suppose. Did you have this too? How are you?
