Week 3 of 52 small changes - getting more active

Once again this is open to everybody even if you're joining late!

This week is about getting routine activity in each day. My favourite example from it being: don't use hired help where possible - build a shed yourself (I won't be doing any shed-building personally but feel free Grin)

Ways to do it:

  1. walk whenever you can - get off a stop or two earlier on the commute, taking a dog for a walk if you have one, walk to run errands instead of driving, park the car further away from the entrance of shops (so stay away from P&C spaces Grin) and take a short walk before breakfast/after dinner/whenever suits you.

  2. on your lunch break at work - take a walk or use the time to do some errands. If you work at a desk then get up and stretch hourly.

  3. while watching TV - fold the laundry, do some floor exercises, tidy the room up

  4. take the stairs rather than a lift/escalator where possible

  5. twice a week find a way to do a fun activity - ice skating, dancing, going for a walk on a beach, whatever you enjoy!

  6. do things manually eg turn the TV on/off without the remote

I'm not doing so well today, think I might have peaked yesterday! I have cleaned the windows and been for a walk but the walk was at toddler-speed i.e. stopping to wave at bus/pick up twig/point at cat every 10 paces. Not sure that counts as exercise!

Thank, fuzzpig.

Beautiful day today, I have managed 16,000 steps as had a meeting at school that meant an extra trip up to school, I also took the dcs and a friend to the park after school. I always thought I walked a lot!

Early night, tonight I think to make up for last night.

Still more exercise than I generally get Pointless! I did get a walk to and from my pupil's house though. Ache like hell, still got another to go though.

Glad you had a better day tday quirky :)

Everyone is doing better with activities than I am. However I agreed with a colleague to start walking at lunchtime, when we are both in the office. It's a start!

No ginger I've been rubbish as well. Too wet to walk further than the car, might have to try walking/running on the spot!

Not great on water either but sleeping like a log.

Oh well, keep trying.

I ran for my train today, does that count? nearly killed me

Work is a bit too manic to even give me brain space at the moment, but I did refill my water bottle instead of going for coffee and walked downstairs to ask a colleague something instead of phoning.

I'm not doing very well on this one. I am doing my physio every day which I had promised myself and I have made plans to finally learn to ride a bike.

Water going well. Sleep okish. Looking forward to the next challenge and like the way this thread is making me think.

My other promises to myself t see my friends more and sort out storage in my house have taken over. I have mostly chatted and built flat pack furniture this week.

If building a shed counts, flat pack furniture definitely counts too I would say margarita :D

Plan was to declutter this week but I've kinda ignored that and coasted along with the active thing. Dd is unwell and up coughing a lot of the night, so yeah the sleep thing not going too well, she's a sticking plaster and it's all I can do to force myself out to do some exercise. I'm shattered and grumpy.

I did clean for hours on Sunday not that it looks like it now and have done my usual run/gym wise the rest of the week. Still getting water into me, one positive thing.

Following this thread closely!

When the weeks go by and there a more and more challenges, would it be helpful to have one thread to refer to with just a list of challenges?

7,000 steps so far. I also managed 35 mins of yoga camp. Hope you are feeling better today, fuzzpig.

I lapsed a bit on the water for a few days, in my defence things were quite manic and I usually drink plenty. Sleep was better last night 7hrs 5mins. Early start - thanks kids - but I did go to bed early to make up.

Melvali does that mean we get to find out what's coming next?

Went back to pilates last night (post Christmas break) so that's something. It has snowed today so that did for the lunchtime walking and my other favourite activity is horseriding but that's not going to happen atm either. Might just hibernate for a couple of months Sad

I'm struggling g this week. Any good pilates dvd or YouTube links?

I don't mind either way I just don't want to forget what previous challenges are!!

Rainy sleet here, but did the school run and a few errands to the shops when it was clearer. I have done 10,000 steps today and did 17,000 yesterday. If it's very snowy tomorrow, I might not be walking anywhere.

How do you manage so many steps? Do you do exercise whilst wearing it? I struggle to get to about 8k!

Report
Sirona · 14/01/2016 17:16

Have you tried fitness blender website BoyFrom? I've done pilates videos from there.

Got out for a short walk today with dd while she went on her bike. Sun was out for a change this morning and was nice once you were all wrapped up in the woolies. Did some cleaning when I got home and will try to do some stretches or pilates tonight.

Thanks Smile

Is walking up and down the stairs 5 times some compensation?

Report
Pointlessfan · 14/01/2016 19:48

Water ok today but had a very disturbed night courtesy of DD's new teeth! Felt terrible earlier but just had a 15 min walk and it has perked me up no end. It never occurs to me to go for a walk after dark! Really clear night, beautiful stars even on the edge of a big city.

I've walked about half a mile and climbed a ladder.
And climbed back down.
Can assure you all that that involved every muscle in my body.

Lightbulb! Maybe I should go and do that 10 times tomorrow?
Builders would love it, um, not.

Water - rubbish, think I'll try putting it in a glass.

Sleep - fine.

Night walking is a good idea Pointless, stars are fab here too. Flinking cold though.
Might try later, after more wine.

It's all ok, about to go for a half hour walk. Then curl up with Dogma (sob) then an early night. Boringly virtuous.

Report
DrDiva · 14/01/2016 22:13

Water still going well. Sleep not too bad, although up countless times last night for loo. See previous sentence.

Exercise not so much.

Glad you climbed down the ladder as well as up, bewitched Grin
