Is This An Emergency? Please, please help me!

Hi :) I'll try to keep this brief.
On Tuesday I saw my dentist who wanted to remove a tooth, (left premolar?). I was given injections and the dentist snapped off the top of my tooth, leaving just the nerves and the roots in place. I was told he didn't have the necessary provisions to remove the root and he'd refer me to a hospital at a later date. I was sent home with a prescription for antibiotics.
The injections wore off and naturally I was in agony, that was fine, I anticipated it. However, it's now Saturday and I am still in burning, burning, agonising pain, there is still blood and also a foul smell? (Definitely pus, it even tastes like pus).
I realise the gum needs to heal before all pain will stop but I think something went really wrong. I've been overdosing on tramadol 50mg, co-codamol 30mg and 400mg ibuprofen, plus I've been using alcohol the last two days because my jaw is so swollen and painful that I can't eat or sleep. The painkillers aren't having any effect.

PLEASE advise me??? I KNOW I shouldn't be taking too many painkillers especially with alcohol but I swear this pain is just overwhelming, I've been in tears :/ I am type 2 diabetic and I really need to eat because I'm prone to fainting.

PLEASE help me???

No medical knowledge but I would get to a&e or emergency dentist. Does not sound ok at all.

snowaccidentprone · 28/02/2015 20:42

Do you have a dental hospital nearby who offer an emergency service?

Otherwise suggest A&E?

Homeincrisis · 28/02/2015 20:43

You should go to out of hours dr for help. PLEASE don't take any more alcohol.
I don't know much about dentistry but it sounds like he messed up.

originalusernamefail · 28/02/2015 20:43

Straight to A&E, co-codamol contains paracetamol. An overdose could be fatal.

Liara · 28/02/2015 20:43

I would definitely get it seen.

Sounds like the dentist made a right mess of it.

comeagainforbigfudge · 28/02/2015 20:43

Oft yes I would be phoning for an emergency dentist appointment. Sounds horrific!! Flowers

Phone NHS 24 for advice

TheoriginalLEM · 28/02/2015 20:47

is there an ooh dentist near you but you definitely need attention.

BreeVDKamp · 28/02/2015 20:52

the dentist snapped off the top of my tooth, leaving just the nerves and the roots in place

What!! Why the hell would he do that??? And only THEN he realised he couldn't do the rest and you'd have to stay like that indefinitely? That is insane. Poor you!!

BreeVDKamp · 28/02/2015 20:53

Whenever I've had teeth our (inc molars) they just pull the whole thing out at once with some huge plier type things, and then show you the tooth, roots and all.

Bigbadgeorge · 28/02/2015 20:58

Emergency dentist- phone nhs24. I had to do this at xmas.
Sounds horrid Sad I hope it's sorted soon

TheFairyCaravan · 28/02/2015 20:59

You poor thing. Flowers

The dentist sounds awful. I worked and qualified as a dental nurse, it wasn't unusual for teeth to break during extractions but I never saw a patient sent home to be refferred to the hospital at a later date. He sounds like a completely incompetent.

You sound like you might need some antibiotics if you can taste pus. The very least you should be doing is ringing 111 to ask if there is an emergency dentist available tonight or tomorrow, but you need to stop overdosing on painkillers.

recall · 28/02/2015 21:00

sounds like its infected - need it looking at ASAP

PUGaLUGS · 28/02/2015 21:03

Yes ring 111. I also think it is infected.

IMurderedStampyLongnose · 28/02/2015 21:05

My dentist DH says get yourself to an out of hours dentist. He says nothing has gone wrong as such and your dentist seems to have followed normal protocol for this but unfortunately you've just picked An infection.Keep pumping the antibiotics!

TheFairyCaravan · 28/02/2015 21:08

How many days antibiotics did they give you OP? If was a usual 5 day course you can't have many left and imo if they were going to have worked they would have by now.

ghostspirit · 28/02/2015 21:09

omg change dentist. i had a really bad fear of the dentist. finally my friend helped me and the dentist is great. my tooth had crumbled right below the gum and nerves were exposed. and she basically numbed it and dug it out.

and yes defo antibiotics due to infection that would help your pain as well. also (if) you have an abeses when they go to numb it. it might not fully work. this happend with me she gave me the top does and i could still feel it. so antibiotics needed. what a prat dentist... im angry and its not me :/

have you dried clove oil? also you can get tempary filling kits from the chemist. its helped me sometimes. other times its made it worse

ghostspirit · 28/02/2015 21:09

meant tried not dried

originalusernamefail · 28/02/2015 21:09

I'll say it again......A&E. Your priority is not your tooth (although it needs to be sorted). You need to be checked out as you have been OVERDOSING on painkillers and mixing with alcohol. This could have severe consequences for you. Please please please get yourself seen Sad

SergeantJarhead · 28/02/2015 21:27

Thank you 100 times over for all of your replies!!! I honestly was terrified. I have a true phobia of the dentist so going on Tuesday took guts and look what happened :/ I phoned the out of hours dentist/gp who said he could book me in tomorrow morning and after I told him the medication I had taken he said it sounds like I've marginally missed an overdose. I've been a total tool.
I can't take anymore painkillers and am left in agony for tonight but hopefully tomorrow they will yank it all out. The dentist/doctor didn't seem to care at all, I feel quite sad about that, considering the pain I'm in.
I can't thank you all enough for your advice, I would have kept on taking stupid bloody tablets!!! x

originalusernamefail · 28/02/2015 21:29

OP I'm so glad you have managed to get some help and you aren't in danger from the tablets you've taken. Good luck for tomorrow Thanks

SergeantJarhead · 28/02/2015 21:32

I explained to the gp/dentist on the phone about the blood, pus, swelling and pain in my jaw and head and he didn't seem worried as he casually offered me an appointment tomorrow ... is this normal? I have an anxiety disorder so I depend on reassurance. I'm so sorry for being a bother. Do dentists even DO night time emergency appointments or is that just me being silly?

OP posts:
Mrsmorton · 28/02/2015 21:44

It's not really an emergency, take your antibiotics and wait for your referral to come through. Sometime extraction don't go to plan, premolars are mother fuckers of teeth, I fucking hate any treatment on them, fillings, root fillings, extractions. Absolute nause. I don't think you need to take a slot at an OOH clinic tomorrow however you (and the assembled MN experts) may feel differently.

The dentist wasn't incompetent, some things are just harder than others. If you had been under GA then they would probably have dug about to get it out but doing that in a dental practice means:
a- you're pissed off
b- they run late
c- they lose money
d- the next patient is pissed off

so I think he did what's best for you.

How long have you been taking your antibiotics for?

thefirstmrsrochester · 28/02/2015 21:46

You poor poor thing.
There is a poster who is/has worked as an emergency dentist, MrsMorton I think. Hopefully she will see your thread.
Don't know if MNHQ would edit your thread title to include 'dental', put out the call so to speak? I know you have an emergency appointment tomorro but that's still a long time to be in agony with no prospect of pain relief.

thefirstmrsrochester · 28/02/2015 21:47

Ah.......x post.

Momagain1 · 28/02/2015 21:51

Refer you at a later date? That sounds shit. A&E if not tonight, tomorrow morning.
