Hi :) I'll try to keep this brief.
On Tuesday I saw my dentist who wanted to remove a tooth, (left premolar?). I was given injections and the dentist snapped off the top of my tooth, leaving just the nerves and the roots in place. I was told he didn't have the necessary provisions to remove the root and he'd refer me to a hospital at a later date. I was sent home with a prescription for antibiotics.
The injections wore off and naturally I was in agony, that was fine, I anticipated it. However, it's now Saturday and I am still in burning, burning, agonising pain, there is still blood and also a foul smell? (Definitely pus, it even tastes like pus).
I realise the gum needs to heal before all pain will stop but I think something went really wrong. I've been overdosing on tramadol 50mg, co-codamol 30mg and 400mg ibuprofen, plus I've been using alcohol the last two days because my jaw is so swollen and painful that I can't eat or sleep. The painkillers aren't having any effect.

PLEASE advise me??? I KNOW I shouldn't be taking too many painkillers especially with alcohol but I swear this pain is just overwhelming, I've been in tears :/ I am type 2 diabetic and I really need to eat because I'm prone to fainting.

PLEASE help me???

Thank you MrsMorton, I think I might actually need treatment tomorrow due to other factors, I think I already mentioned them but I'm feeling extremely out of sorts so please bear with me. My gum is still bleeding, I only have about 2 antibiotics left to take, the pain is now spreading to my entire gum on both my upper and lower jaw which has resulted in the most excruciating headache and I feel feverish. I won't get a wink of sleep tonight. I'm trying like billy-o to find a private emergency dentist, I am that desperate.

Thank you all previous posters xx

MN is so impressive... thefirstmrsrochester how brilliant are you for saying that, and then the very same Mrsmorton comes along. Hats off to you both.

madwomanbackintheattic · 28/02/2015 21:55

This happened to me too - I didn't fancy waiting for the appointment for GA to dig the rest of it out, so I bribed dh to spend a day calling every private dentist within driving distance to find one who was prepared to dig it out for me. (I had opted for extraction as the 'easy' way out, because the root canal on the identical tooth on the other side had been a motherfucker of a deal as my roots are bizarre as all hell)

I am not an anxious person though, and was prepared to put up with a good deal of rummagery and digging to get it all out (it took 45 minutes of drilling and digging and the dentist kept stopping and asking me if I was sure I wanted him to carry on - his partner was prepared to do GA the following day but I wanted the Damned thing over.)

Keep taking the antibiotics and get thee to the dentist in the morning. It will be all done soon Smile

I did spend the next two days in bed though. I looked like I had been beaten up and you could see the finger bruises.

Oops, meant to say, hope you get relief soon Seargent

PeppermintPasty · 28/02/2015 21:57

I'm not even drunk! Sergeant

Mixtape · 28/02/2015 22:02

OP I have anxiety too, so just to add to the reassurance - last year I had a horrendous abscess on my front tooth, kept having emergency appointments, pumped full of antibiotics and painkillers, after 5 days I went to A&E because my face was swelling, I was boiling and in agony and had maxed out on painkillers and called 111, spoke to OOh and that was their only suggestion - they were really nice at A&E and gave me oral morphine, but medically it wasn't a concern, even though I was panicking about blood poisoning etc.

I really sympathise, it is so horrible. I finally went to a private dentist who cut open my gun and hoovered out the pus. The relief was overwhelming!

SergeantJarhead · 28/02/2015 22:03

If I went to A+E tonight presenting these symptoms could they do anything for me? I'll take money out of my tiny limited savings to pay to see a doctor privately so as not to burden the NHS if necessary.

Thank you Mixtape, I get myself so overwhelmed and then I can't think straight. There aren't any bloody private dentists near me argh!

Call 111. They will tell you the best thing to do taking into account the amount of pain relief you've been taking, the diabetes etc.
Hope you're soon feeling much better.

Purpleball · 28/02/2015 22:21

Swilling your mouth with salt water will help as it's good for temporarily getting rid of pus and cleaning wounds. It might offer some temporary relief

SergeantJarhead · 28/02/2015 22:27

Ty Purpleball I'll try that.
whattodo I live in Wales so no 111 I'm afraid and NHS Direct closed March 2014 :(

I don't know how the hell to sleep with all this pain.

Sergeant, if the pain is that bad, go to A&E. Seriously.

poisonedbypen · 28/02/2015 22:49

You can probably take more painkillers now - certainly ibuprofen & maybe paracetamol depending on when you last took them. You won't overdose on ibuprofen. Paracetamol can be dangerous though.

MatildaTheCat · 28/02/2015 22:54

You can still take painkillers overnight. Just don't overdose.

You can take tramadol, paracetamol and ibuprofen all to maximum dose together or staggered. Good night I hope you get some sleep and get some relief at the dentist.

Have you tried a wrapped hot water bottle held against your jaw?

dobby2001 · 28/02/2015 23:10

Try searching here www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk/localservices/searchlocalservices.aspx

MountainDweller · 01/03/2015 00:40

Not a Dr but pretty experienced in pain management! In case this helps, the max daily dose of Tramadol is 400mg. For paracetamol it is 4g (8x500mg tablets). So if you can work out how much you have taken, you will know whether you can take any more. Codeine doesn't really have a max dose, but you will be constrained by the paracetamol in the co - codamol. For nurofen, the prescription dose is up to 2400mg (twice the packet recommendation) but you have to be careful as too many can upset your stomach, and even lead to stomach ulcers. If you can eat anything at all, take them with food - a glass of milk or a yoghurt will be fine.

MountainDweller · 01/03/2015 00:42

Forgot to say, if pain is really bad go to a&e and hopefully the can give you something stronger.

SergeantJarhead · 01/03/2015 16:09

Good afternoon all!
I was sent to an emergency appointment this morning at 9:45am to a dental hospital. A nurse hit a few teeth and my gum and roots with some sort of dental hammer about 5/6 times and then said 'the roots will have to come out, get yourself referred to a hospital' and that was it.
Is this normal? She cleaned the pus out with a suction tool that had me screaming in pain (exposed nerves). If this continues CAN I go to A+E? I really don't want to waste anybody's time. Ty for the suggestions re:pain medication, I've only taken the right dose at the right time today. I was given a lift to Tesco to find a hot water bottle but there weren't any. My entire left jaw is now hot to touch and agonising. I can't find any private dentists so I have no idea what to do???

Thank you all for your help!
