Mirena Fitting On Wednesday-Advice Please

I am having a mirena fitted on Wednesday morning - I have a really active stressy job as a nurse- will I feel ok to run my shift ?
How have other people felt after their fitting?

crampy. Take paracetamol before you go. You'll be fine.

I had a massive vasovagal episode when mine was fitted (when they clamped my cervix) and felt wobbly for a few hours afterwards.

I took paracetamol and ibuprofen before it was done, and regularly afterwards but still had some nasty cramping for the rest of the day.

I had to take to my bed with a hot water bottle and strong painkillers due to the cramps which were as bad as labour after pains. I couldn't even drive home due to feeling less than well.
On a more positive note it has been great and I don't have anything negative to say about it!

Felt awful for 30 secs during and several hours after - horrendous cramps, would not have wanted to be working.

I took some ibuprofen beforehand and was fine, and I'm not somebody with a high pain threshold

Take ibruprofen and paracetomol and ask for instilligel
First one of mine was fine, felt nothing, fine after
Second was less experienced, huge cramp, bled a lot after and period type cramps for the rest of the day

Blessed I think taking annual leave is very wise. Hope all goes well for you. Mine is coming up for five years at Easter and quite frankly I'm dreading the replacement. My cervix would not open last time either which didn't help with fitting, then the near faint after. Joy.

I have Vestibulodynia so even just having the clamps in hurts Confused.

Defo a holiday day! I've had two and felt very crampy and a bit weak afterwards.

I was gine, slightvdiscomgott for a few minutes durung the actual insertion but nothing unbearable. Nocrrampling afterwards. I had it done after work, but would have been fine to work if I'd had to.

It seems to be different for different people, and you won't know unil its done. Take the day off, and if it's fine then you'll have a nice relaxing day.

When I had mine replaced last year, I felt so dizzy and daring afterwards with cramping that I decided to take the day off work (unplanned). I have an office based job so am sat down a lot, definitely wouldn't have been able to cope with an active job on my feet. I just laid on the sofa with a hot water bottle looking sad Hmm

I'm thinking of having this fitted due to heavy periods. Is it like having a smear or is the fitting much more painful? Getting worried now!

It's much worse than a smear. I have no problem having a smear at all...I just don't find them uncomfortable at all. But having the mirena fitted was agony for me. When they clamped by cervix I almost vomited and felt faint. By the time I got home I cramped for at least an hour and felt uncomfortable for a while after.

I had it out after 3 weeks as I hated having it in. Having it out was worse as the doctor cut the strings too short and I had to have a scan to find it!

As long as you take pain relief an hour before you go you will be OK. It's not pleasant but it's not absolutely agonising as long as you relax your muscles. A tip - don't lift your bum (as much as you will want to) when they are putting it in as this makes it worse.

I have had the mirena for 17 years and had it fitted as an 18yo who hadn't had a baby. I have had 4 now :) Never had a bleed the whole time I was on them! Just had my last one remove as we are trying for a baby. Removed in the November, period soon after, pregnant in the December - eek!

I've had three. The first at 41 due to flooding and it was so successful I had two more tiding me over the menopause.
The first two were no different to a normal coil, ie a bit like a smear. The third was painful and I felt very faint afterwards for a few hours.

All so worth it though. Smile.

Hi OP I had one fitted 2 years ago for severe flooding and anaemia. I don't recall any pain whilst having it fitted. Also had a polyp removed from cervix and colposcopy all at the same sitting Hmm
But afterwards it felt as though I was in labour, DH had to drive home and I laid down for a few hours with painkillers and hot water bottle.
I'm also a nurse and would not have been able to cope with a busy shift straight afterwards. I went back to work the next day tho.

Mine took 6 months to settle down, spotting etc but now I have no periods atall! it's fab so hang in there.

auntiedee can I ask what it feels like to have one removed? I get the feeling it's worse coming out than going in?!

I've had two, no worse than a smear test plus normal period pains for me, that's with removal as well as fitting, but I still think a day off is a good idea if you've got an active job where you can't just go home if you do feel bad.
