How long till the bleeding stops

Iv just started on

TRANEXAMIC ACID 500ML

AND

MEFENAMIC ACID 500ML

to stop my periods.

Any idea how long till the blood stops?

Any experience would be great

t's a while ago but I had that combination of drugs plus a third one too (progesterone, I think) when my body once went totally bonkers. I think it took about 36 hours, though the bleeding was lighter after 24 hours.

It was really effective, though do make sure that you are tested for anaemia afterwards. No-one did for me, and when I went back to the GP 10 days or so later she was appalled at how low my iron levels were. A few lovely iron tablets soon sorted me out though.

Doctor put me on Iron tablets, i was already on these, but she upped the dose

They don't stop the bleeding, they do something to the clotting so it's thicker and seems like it's less. Northisterone stops periods but if you're already bleeding it will still come out. I take cerazette, that's fab and stops it (odd day of bleeding though).

You need to ask your GP to refer you to the menstraul (sorry, I can't spell this) disorders clinic. Have they tried to work out why you're periods are like this? Ultrasound?

TMI alert!
I've always had really light periods until this month. I've now been bleeding for last 10 days, using tampon & two nighttime pads and still having to change every three hours tops as I'm flooding.
Have been taking ibuprofen as apparently it makes the bleeding less.

Its a bit lighter now, just tampon and one nighttime pad every 3 hrs, is such a pain at night. Also having massive clots.

None of this has happened before. Is this a one off or will it keep happening from your experience?

Excessive bleeding can be caused by a lot of things, you're best off going to your GP, himm Do make sure they send you for an ultrasound though. Fibroids can cause crazy bleeding and if they sort them when they are small, the medication they prescribe to shrink them works a heck of a lot better.

hiimangelafernandez - I too had never had anything like it. I had a whole range of tests to eliminate any medical reasons for it, but it turned out to be a one off for me (probably age/menopausal related: I was 47 at the time and had just skipped a couple of periods for the first time).

I can't register with the area gp as I don't have the right ID - need passport/driving licence, don't have and utility bills in your name, also don't have.

Would the walk in clinic be able to do it does anyone know? Is where I've been going (only once for broken bone!) since I moved and new gp won't take me.

My mum had fibroids and a hysterectomy but was 10 years older than I am now (35).

Hopefully that's what mine is just a one off! Makes me feel better! Think I may have missed some periods over the last year so maybe peri menopause.

Weirdly I have absolutely no pain this time, usual period is light and ouchy, this one I forget I have until I'm uncomfortable!

Fibroids can be genetic. My sister has them, and both aunts on my father's side had hysterectomies because of fibroids, leaving them childless I'm waiting for an appointment with a gynae to see if I can get mine removed.

You need to register with a GP as that's where the hospital send information. Have you tried calling your nearest one to see what other sorts of ID you can give them? Do you have a bank statement/birth certificate?

That is my nearest one! My medical info is now with the health authority as I moved out of area and new gp won't let me register. I actually wouldn't have moved here had I realised! Same company have the nearest 5 surgeries, others won't take me as out of catchment.

I have bank statement, birth cert. work/ payslip ID, home phone, mobile phone. None of these meet their 'criteria'.

I'll get a passport when I can afford it, but tbh have other things to prioritise right now.

Is there another surgery?? This one sounds dire. They can see you as a temporary patient until you get things sorted Failing this, get in touch with the practice manager and give them an ear full.

I've had a few appointments over the last few years. Two wanted me to have a hysterectomy, I had to remind them of the other options, then I got a referral to a specialist who does minimal interventions (none surgery) and I was given medication. The smaller ones have gone, but I have 2 which are on stalks on the outside and one on the inside which wouldn't shrink. They are growing and I look permanently pregnant so it's time for the fibroids to go. I'm not having a hysterectomy though, there's only 3, so I think it's a bit drastic.

Go back and ask for some Northisterone. It will ease it for as long as you're taking it. Also ask for an ultrasound and a referral.

I have the odd bit of bleeding, and oddly magnesium and zinc supplements help.

pepsi thats a ridiculous amount of time! Hope you are ok? How long have you been taking the tranexamic and mefenamic? What did the dr say about how long it takes to work?

LdaySybil I didn't realise that I could attend as a temp patient. They really are not friendly, have filled in MN survey on gp's. DS is registered, I had to queue up at 8am (surgery opens at 9, to get an on the day appt) there were older people on crutches and kids in pain FFS, in the cold, making an appt, walking home and coming back!

No one else in this area.

When I said can I call for DS appt as i work, apparently if he is that sick I would take the time off, which means a half day to make the appt then another to fulfil. Which I did on tues for DS's blood test, booked time off, picked him up, went to place on sheet, no nurse. Go to the next one, short staffed, try the walk in 2 hour wait, bloods end in 1.30 hours.

I live in the SE and feel like proper healthcare doesn't exist. Though the people and the walk in clinics are really nice!

Nowhere I can go for this type of problem, best hope its a one off and start buying shares in sanitary ware!!

Pepsi, I left it a similar time too and was told off because I hadn't gone to the GP sooner. They said I should never leave it more than 10 days.

Not at all.

It turned out to be a one off in terms of v heavy/prolonged bleeding (fortunately. I was actually hospitalised it was so dramatic). I continued to miss the odd month, but my periods settled down again for a couple of years, pretty regular and normal. After 18 - 24 months I started to skip more and more periods, until I was eventually more off than on. Six years on, I've pretty much stopped altogether now.

Mine seemed to be a fanfare to announce that changes were a-coming, but I suffered no lasting effects.

Hope that things settle down for you. Do get as your GP to refer you for tests to check for fibroids, just in case.

So bleeding stopped with 6 hours of starting the tablets...
I had sex and started to bleed again :/

Try some zinc and magnesium supplements. Heavy bleeding is often down to a hormone imbalance too, so have you looked at your diet? Cut out any quick (junk) food, beans are good, oily fish, and veg, drink more water. Cut down alcohol (sorry), coffee, wheat and sugar.

Oh, sorry, x post with your last message What pills did you take? Have you had an ultrasound to check for a polyp?
