How many times a day do you pee?

joshandjamie · 13/08/2014 22:41

I have always had what my mother describes as a 'cheap japanese bladder'. I apologise to all Japanese. I have no idea what she even means.

However, while I have always needed to pee a lot, I have noticed over the last few days that I really do go an awful lot. I've noticed this because I have been working at home and seem to be wearing out the carpet between my office and the loo.

So today I thought I would keep a record of how many times I go. Since getting up at just after 7am when the first pee occurred, I have pee'd 15 times. I can assure you that there will be at least two more before I go to sleep - one when I go to clean my teeth shortly and another just before I turn out the lights. that will bring the total to 17 times in a day.

I have looked up symptoms for diabetes and urinary tract infections and overactive bladder. I don't seem to fit the bill for any of them. I do drink a lot of water - about 7 pints a day, plus about 3 cups of coffee and tonight, several glasses of wine, but I think my liquid intake and pee outgoings are fairly consistent.

I do feel thirsty regularly, hence the drinking of a lot of water. But what else could this be? Is it normal to pee this many times a day??

Note - I don't need to get up at night to pee unless I am woken by something else, and then I just go 'in case'. I don't have accidents, I can bounce on a trampoline with reasonable confidence, and have no other symptoms. Help

That sounds a lot to me. Have you had a diabetes test?

GingerRodgers · 13/08/2014 22:55

At 37 weeks pregnant I am probably peeing about 5/6 times a day so am a bit Shock at your numbers!

joshandjamie · 13/08/2014 22:57

Cherry I haven't had the diabetes test but am not thinking I should!

That should be now not 'not'

That's a lot of water! No wonder you need to go 17 times a day. Did you recently start drinking more, or do you live in a hot country or work out a lot?

I forget exactly what the Japanese comment refers to, but I seem to remember it wasn't nice - something about cheap goods. Probably best not to use that phrase, it's old fashioned & people could find it offensive, TBH.

joshandjamie · 13/08/2014 23:08

Live in Yorkshire. Not hot. Not working out more than usual. I have always drunk a lot of water. Apologies for Japanese comment.

I think I probably pee 4-6 Times in a 24 hr period

HumblePieMonster · 13/08/2014 23:15

I think 4-6 times is average but older women's bladders shrink so they need to go more often. How long can you wait between goes, if you have to? I haven't been the same since I waited nine hours at the Reading festival in 1999.

2kidsintow · 13/08/2014 23:19

Before work.
At morning playtime
At lunchtime
After school
After dinner
Before bed.

I wonder if this site might help...?

Around 10 times during a waking-hours day, & 4 times overnight.

4boysxhappy · 14/08/2014 09:15

I drink tea constantly so about once every hour when a wake.

Have tried to cut back on tea but to stressed and no alternative seems to work.

The family say I tea pee.

MysteryCat · 14/08/2014 09:16

I sound similar to you OP - most days I go at least 10/12 times during the day and often more. I also wake a couple of times in the night to go. But I'm also thirsty a lot and drink loads of water so that probably contributes. I was tested for diabetes but haven't got it - doctor said I just must have a small bladder! Doesn't cause any problems but it is annoying - especially when travelling anywhere by car as I'm always uncomfortable on long journeys!

Portlypenguin · 14/08/2014 09:18

Quite a lot, but varies depending on business - probably 8-10 times during waking hours.

booksandchoc · 14/08/2014 09:19

Only go 2-3 times a day, regularly go 10 hours between and once I've realised I need to pee I can hold on for a few hours more. I don't drink enough and this is something I'm working on. I think I have a massive bladder.

rallytog1 · 14/08/2014 10:23

I've always pee'd about that much Blush

Interestingly, when I had an emcs last year, it was discovered that the geography of my bladder was somewhat unusual - there's supposed to be a layer of fat between your bladder and uterus, which I didn't have (hence why the surgeon managed to rip open my bladder, but that's a whole other story!). They did say afterwards that this could be the reason for why I need to empty my bladder so often, as it could be a bit more sensitive.

It might be worth you seeing someone about it though, just to be on the safe side.

Eva50 · 14/08/2014 16:14

4-5 times during the day and once overnight. I am a poor sleeper and if I take a sleeping tablet and sleep all night I do not wake to wee or wet the bed so I don't really need to go overnight. I drink 3+ litres a day but have a good sized bladder and can go all day (7:30-5:30) if we are busy at work.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 14/08/2014 16:26

Somewhere between 8 and 12 times on a normal day, I should think (more if at the pub). I'm always thirsty as well, and drink lots of tea and water. It's a right bloody pain. Sometimes I worry it's more a nerves thing, a fear of having to go to the toilet when I can't (in the street, at the theatre, out for a walk), which means I go before I really need to? Tested negative for bloody sugar weirdness, no idea what else it could be.

wanttosinglikemarycoughlan · 14/08/2014 16:27

I pee all the time. More in the mornings and if I have to drive I am cross legged after 30 minutes
I drink a lot though so if I have to drive somewhere I reduce how much I drink

joshandjamie · 14/08/2014 19:25

Good to know there are other frequent pee-ers. Thanks for links carfare - will take a look. Have kept a log again today. So far 11 times. Reckon about 15 by the time I go to bed. Am going to monitor this for a few days and then see a doc.

Maybe 7-8 times a day and once in the night. I am taking a diuretic though for a condition so no nighttime wees before which was good!

Azquilith · 14/08/2014 19:31

Two or three times.

MyFairyKing · 14/08/2014 20:01

7 pints is nearly 4 litres!! I don't think you should see a doctor before you've cut down the amount of fluid you consume. No wonder you are peeing so often. It really isn't good for you to drink so much.

Lauren83 · 15/08/2014 23:12

I don't drink much at all, go 30-40 times a day, had urodynamics testing and diagnosed with OA bladder, on meds now which help a bit luckily

Bunbaker · 15/08/2014 23:22

"I do drink a lot of water - about 7 pints a day,"

That is a lot of water. I think you should book a fasting blood test to rule out diabetes.
